"I hold her close until she's gone. I'll never know what she was running from. I'll cash her check in the morning." That quote is emblematic of the whole movie all by itself. When I saw this movie in theatre, the guy next to me stop dead chewing his popcorns.
I don't think I've ever seen a better casted movie. Sure there are some roles that are perfectly casted but never have I seen such an impressive overall line-up.
Yeah, don't one of the American award ceremonies have a prize for best ensemble? I think it might only be for television programmes though - Lost for instance, is a good example of a strong cast all round - but if it extended to film, this should've definitely qualified.

Same old principles. If they think they can appeal to stupid teenagers who just want to see everything 'bigger' (read more explosions, more blood, more sex, more, more, more, you know, the people for which they keep making Transformers films and remaking good horror films like Elm Street into mindless shit) then it will indeed suck humongous chunks of ass. However, if they stick to a series of very strong, simple stories, featuring iconic anti-heroes, it'll work again.
"its time to prove to your friends that you're worth a damn, sometimes that means dying, or sometimes that means killing a whole lot of people" easily one of THEE best lines in the film
What made the movie so great was #1 The perfect actors for the parts, #2 The filming/music, #3 Word for word picture for picture with the book, #4 Not worrying if the mainstreamers get the ugly beauty of it all (though a lot did) So ie its the perfect movie.
Sin City is a unique case in that absolute faithfulness to the source was genuinely beneficial to the project. The perfect director (Rodriguez with his cartoonish style) was married to a graphic novel so cinematic, you could literally lift and shoot.
Usually films that try to stay slavishly to the original and satisfy the fanboy checklist miss the bigger picture, as they lose sight that they're making a film. Whatever the fans enjoy about Watchman, the narrative and direction just don't work.
@TheConciseStatement Yes, though Frank Miller, afaik, played a large part in directing this movie.
I find it amazing that you can literally take both the comic and the movie and clearly see it's the same thing, clearly see they're the same people (perfectly casted) yet still find it an entirely different approach to the same stories, both so enjoyable.
Yes he did. Rodriguez sort of insisted on it. He fell so in love with Miller's images and storytelling that he was convinced Miller was pretty much already a film director.
The two main obstacles were persuading him that he'd enjoy working with actors - from what I know, in the end he loved it - and getting the Directors Guild to allow multiple directors - I don't think they did, with Rodriguez taking a stand and leaving them for the sake of the film.
This may sound corny, but this is one of my favorite opening credit sequences.
I mean, the use of the comic images to introduce the actors/characters is pretty cool, not to mention keeping a good tie to the source material of the movie.
yeah, the oscars are subjective, but i still watch 'em every year. this movie should've definitely been nominated for sumthin', if not 4 best pic. but on da other hand, it was too dark and bloody for the academy (same reason mystic river didn't win). still one of my all-time favs tho.
I'm not that mad on the Tarantino bit myself. I think it's Rodriguez's slavish faithfulness to the source's style that makes this so great (for me at least).
Oh damn, this is one of those things where if you get it wrong everyone laughs at you for not recognising Tarantino's style.
Uh, I think it's the driving scene where Dwight is turning so paranoid that and Jackie Boy is actually holding an antagonising conversation with him. But I could be wrong.
is it that music which i splayed when burce willis is driving in his car at the beginning of the movie??? what music was that??? that dramatic song... need it ...
Actually I was really happy when the instrumental of The Servant's 'Cells', used on the trailers, was used over the DVD menu too. I hope they somehow find a way to keep it for Sin City 2.

@TheConciseStatement So in other words, if they try to use the Micheal Bay method.
That's what worries me.

nah Rodriguez would never do something like making a sequel just for kicks. Besides his "co-director" would have a heart attack

how in the hell is this movie "Fantasy"?
There are zero...zero Tolkein type characters, zero silly little elves or faeries.
What they meant to say was "Pulp Fiction" in the sense of the genre that precedes the movie of the same name.

You're right, it's not fantasy. The genre for Sin City would most accurately be simply "film noir".
