Well I Never new that about MIddle C wow lol I am self taught so this has been a great help ( But when you see a pianist on tv they are pretty frantic by moving in every direction possible is this a Bad thing or shows expression 8)
In answer to your question, picture this: you are at a carnival trying to win a prize by shooting those little metal ducks with an air gun but instead of standing on the ground you are standing on a giant rubber ball :()
This is a great learning session. I used it to teach my children at home (when they get piano assighnments). Nobody ever told them. Rarely taught ! I do appriciate this video. THANK YOU!
I loved your video thank you so much, I'm a beginner and started learning with Will Barrow's LEarn to MAster the piano DVD set and I can already feel how important sitting at the piano is to avoid injury and discomfort. Thanks for taking the time to post this and like previous posters wrote, I would LOVE tutorials from you as well, if you have the tie!
Lessons of a lifetime... I started playing the piano about a year ago and I don't have a teacher, nor anybody to tell me what I'm doing wrong. This video exposes my shortcomings. Now you are my mentor.
I am so happy to hear from you and to know I am helping in your quest for learning to play the piano! I have an entire piano course I want to write for students like yourself to learn to play the piano from beginner to advanced - but finding the time to make the videos and write the books is so challenging! Please pray that I find the time and I will be helping you learn to play the piano even better! Much love from New York, Diane
Can you play a Steinway Concert Grand, or a Wurlitzer Electric Piano, or a Fender Rhodes Piano(Check out the new Rhodes Mark 7 if you get a chance)or even a clavinet or Roland piano? Thanks for the tip on how to sit properly at the piano when you play it!
Grandissima insegnate!!! Grazie mi hai illuminato sul modo di poter sedermi correttamente al pianoforte!! Grazie ciao, in bocca al lupo per le tue composizioni al pianoforte.
Thanks you again Diane. I wish I had this lesson when I started one year ago. It could have saved me a lot of suffering. I am glad your demomstration is here. It is not too late.
(It reminds me of an anecdote about the rock band Genesis. It was on how they made a casting for a new drummer and how they knew he was the one (Phil Collins) before he played anything, just by the way he sat on the drum sit.)
Bonjour Diane! I've just discovered your channel and this video. And at first, I was wondering what the use of a eleven minutes video for just sitting at tha piano. But after few seconds, as your explainations have began things become clearer. You are a very amazing teacher. Your explainations are so clear and so bright. It seems so simple after you've quietly and in a very clever way showed us what is the risk and how to avoid it.
You just get a new subscriber from Bordeaux (France) :o)
Wow! France!!! That's beautiful ;) Bonjour!!! Thank you for your kind comments! Yes, this info is actually more important than a lot of us realize - but if someone gets injured, then they wish they had known...
Greetings, Diane! This is an absolutely fantastic video. Such helpful teaching for people who may 'noodle around' on their piano without yet taking formal instruction. A person could really sidestep neuro-muscular injury by watching your calm demonstration on how to be aligned before and while playing!
I hope your summer has gone well and your Fall will be awesome! Hugs and love, ~Terry
So nice to hear from you again! I have missed you!!!!
Believe it or not, this material was part of what our Seminar presented at Juilliard to concert pianists who came from all over the world, many with injuries from incoordinate movements. So although this is good for those you mentioned, it is also crucial for serious artists :)
Hi Diane! Great pointers here! lol I have to admitt I think I break every one of these rules! I have to start paying more attention to to the way I sit and keep my hands........lol having taught myself I rarely even use the correct fingering on chords, Lol you would probby have a fit if I started taking lessons with you! :) Thanks for the helpful tips!!! Peeeeeeeace! :)
Thanks for your comments and you are right - pianists work with gravity - I need to make that my next video.... I just need to find the time. I hope you stay tuned to our channel!
I'm so glad to hear from you and to know that you are tickling the ivories ;) So happy to be of assistance and I look forward to posting more videos to be of help to you!
Priceless information! though much of this seems pretty basic. These simple tips can make a world of difference. I will remember them. thanks much, winston
This is information we presented at a Lincoln Center seminar for concert pianists who attended from all over the world not too long ago. You are so right - these very basic principles of coordinate movement provide the foundation that we need :)
Another Awesome Lesson Thank you I Like Playing The Piano You Are So SweeT To Take Your Time For US GreaTly Said WonderFuL Video And InFormaTion HUGSS ***** AngeL *****
Thank you for rating and for your kind words! Perhaps this is the first video I should have uploaded since sitting at the piano is the first thing we do before we can play! lol
hey thanks for the lesson. I never knew that, I used to always line up with middle c unfortunately I lost the fire for the piano too bad they didn't have youtube in the 80's ss72
Yes, most people do think middle c is the mid-line and to line up there but then they are a little off-center which can affect technique. Maybe you could get the fire back for the piano when I start to post my piano course - I have yet to write it, but I have a course in my head that could help everyone at every age to learn to read music and play the piano well.... I hope you keep in touch!
Dear Diane, this video is absolutely essential for all the young pianists. It should be viewed by all the students, parents and teachers.......
I suggest that you publish another video on an important subject: how to use your body weight to produce a powerful sound. Too many young pianists only use their fingers or their forearms, thus producing a dry and harsh sound. You are the person to explain that.....
Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me the words for what I want to teach next!!!! You encapsulated the "need" very well - I was going to call it understanding how to drop with weight from the various fulcrums! Yes, I will do this next.
You are always so kind with your encouragement! Thank you so much for your supportive words and also for your rating!!! I always enjoy your videos! You are an awesome musician!
Thank you for your encouraging words! I'm so happy to be able to help with your posture at the piano since it is so important for your technical freedom at the keyboard and health of your body. I hope you stay close with us as we upload more teaching videos :)

You are an excellent instructor. Thank you kindly for your video!
