there is alot more going on in taiji and push hands practise than anyone can teach it is through hard work and self practise of physical and mental understanding to gain profeciency in Taiji , I have been preactising 14 years yang and chen style it is not easy to learn and it is not easy to teach. Just keep filling up your cup add a little here add a little more there! by the way peng for me is to yield like wardoff and deflect but also yeild has soft/hard ying yang could be different things!
I can never quite get the hang of it, but I think pushing hands is something you can learn only by experience. We practise this almost every training session in our karate dojo.
This is true. You have to forget yourself and concentrate on what the other person is doing. That's hard because two things are happening at the same time. You are moving them and they are moving you both looking for weakness in everything. My advice when practicing forget attacking nd defending just follow. Once you learn to follow then you can worry about attack and defense. It's harder that way because you can land on your butt more but you will progress fasting in time.
Chiless you don't know much about Tai Chi then, even though this is off topic I bet you just thought Aikido was just locks and holds, Aikido does some kicking too believe it or not.
this is tai chi... or tai ji, in fact, tai ji have many components like pushing hands, this exercise is goog for your balance. if you are interested you can see YMAA school in boston, in europe, you can find it in places like france, polony, irland, portugal, italy.. Long live master Yang.
tui shou is often called push hands, but it's probably more accurate to call it sensing hands. it's like hubud from filipino kali, or chi sao from wing chun.
Does Taiji grab? This question has come to mind alot especially since Taiji is suppost to be a soft art right? Well after some research i found out that "Grasp the sparrows tail" , is talking about adhering and grabing the opponents attacking hand, wrist or arm.
Yes, and no. Tai chi does grab but most of the time tai chi is taught as not to need grabbing because the premise is to let the motion continue, grabbing tends to stop the flow, and we like to redirect that flow back on our opponents.
I think I covered this already. Cai is what is a chin'na. Tai chi grabs aren't like other martial arts grabs. The tai chi method is to let the flow continue while using chin'na to obstruct the joint. For example, when you redirect a puch using cai you pluck the punch pulling it in the direction it is going, then turning the joint into an awkward angle using the momentum to break the person's wrist or arm. Tai Chi's means are very deceptive.
Also remember that this is a chen version of cai. Each style of Tai Chi chuan is a little different even though the basics are the same. Old Yang used cai a little different as yang style is a little more passive then chen in both form and application.
Your an arrogant SOB. "I think I covered this already". You see this is the reason why i have problems talking with you white washed MTF's cause yall think yall know every GD thing. How the F is you gonna try to educate me on something i have been practicing for the last 13 years. I know my $#!+
I see so you think after 13 years of study you know everything about Tai Chi chuan? Oh well good luck with your practice, a small suggestion. When you do tuishou please remember to stick and not focus on self so much.
Sorry. I just know people who probably have been picked on because they thought they knew every damn thing in the world. And you my friend was one of those people. How bout this If you would stop being an arrogant dick everytime you think you know something then maybe people will want to learn from you and you could get a girlfriend.
LOL! Young man I am married. Please stop being arrogant, I am not interested in teaching anyone Tai Chi Chuan. I was having a discussion on push hands. Now if you would stop being so arrogant to think that you know everything after 13 years then maybe you might be able to have a civil discussion. I don't teach anymore. Which reminds me why aren't you practicing?
Oh yeah. Well if you talk to your wife the same way that you talk to me, then your marriage has went to hell already. And whats the point of telling someone something if you dont want to teach them; unless YOU JUST WANNA SHOW PEOPLE HOW MUCH BULLSHIT YOU ACTUALLY KNOW. WHITE PEOPLE!
Young man you have a large chip on your shoulder and I didn't put it there. You're not interested in learning. You want to impress people with how much you think you know. Before with you it was the history of the Shaolin Temple, now it's push hands, next it will be something else, then you get nasty when someone who is older and more experienced says something you don't like. Again if you have been practicing Tai Chi Chuan then you should have learned how to yield by now. continued
If you are an expert and you say you know your craft then you should be perfecting it and not be wasting time by arguing with people. Personally after 13 years I wouldn't claim to be an expert. Hell I have been doing Tai Chi Chuan for over 20 years and I still am not an expert. The more you know the less you know but that's me. Either way good luck with your practice.
Regardless the fact still remains that people like you are not open to facts. Thats all that im bringing you. Not some washed down American point of view that realy does not have any credibility in the Taijiquan community and broad as it is.

Paraphrase from the Taiji Classics, as dictated by Zhang Sang Feng the original master;
1) Cultivate stillness through post standing.
2) Cultivate relaxation through the form itself.
3) When pushing hands, stick, yield, and follow, but never antagonize, the moment you antagonize, your opponent will use that force against you.

Stick, yield, follow, and at the right moment unbalance.

Tai Chi most certainly does grab. Especially in places like grasp the sparrow's tail and holding the Tiger.

As the eight triagrams are referring to the bagua, what is Cai "Pluck" referring too.?

Remember you must merge with your opponent without obstruction in perfect balance. All tai chi techniques are geared to that.
