Ok I think this band is an epic fail. Reason is Daniel Heiman, he was like a hundred times better in Lost Horizon. With this band he can't fully express his vocal quality and hit those bloody extremely high notes. Besides that, his vocal is totally power metal oriented which means it really rocked in Lost Horizon, especially with Wojtek Lisicki on guitar - one of the sicker!! So I can only say this, it's really sad that happend and I can only pray he comes back to LH and rock the hell out again!
Ozzy is one of the single most overrated "musicians" of all time. When Ronnie James Dio was with Sabbath, they really had something for a short time - but I really can't respect what Ozzy does, as he reminds me of fast food; He's highly marketable, but he doesn't quite fill you up. I wouldn't compare the vocals of Black Sabbath to those of Cynic in the first place, except to say that they are both less than outstanding.
Oh absolutely not. Though I would then say that there is a line between music and audible garbage that must be drawn at some point. Death Metal and Black Metal vocals have their place, and there are many excellent vocalists who choose styles fitting and defined as belonging to these types of music. However, depending on HOW extreme you are talking, a lot of bands, through distasteful choice and sometimes through lack of skill, misuse these vocal styles in ways that just plain sound like shit.
I agree, I find genres like grindcore and deathcore take extreme vocals too far sometimes and the songs come off as too chaotic. I sit there struggling to find a rhythm really.
But music lacking melody and harmony is entirely subjective. I've met people who don't really have the feel for any metal at all because it's simply too complex for them. Multiple tempos amongst different instruments and the speed at which they change notes is too much for them. They aren't bright people though. They like simple music like mainstream rap. Which consists of a few hand claps, a drum machine with a super basic beat and the lyrics that would put a hick to shame.
But, to answer your question - No, I do not believe that vocals must be of a perfectly clean pitch to exhibit talent and prove tasteful and even excellent. But as I said, if there is no sense of melody or harmony, and it comes off as completely incoherent drivel, to the point where it hardly sounds like a human being, we call that beatboxing ;)
Seriously though, how can someone compare this to emo? The instrumentals alone separate it lol. Emo music is shit like Panic at the Disco and 30 Seconds to Mars.

The guitarwork is elementary at best, the vocals are extremely weak, especially due to Daniel's high capability, and the entire song teems with a screamo undertone. If you can't hear that, please explain to me a metal band which is not poser, that must distort their vocals for the desired result of sounding like a spineless bitch, and which only plays power chords to emotional and weepy lyrics. In Flames does a lot of that these days, you know... Lols.
The fact that there is actually a guitar solo puts it beyond elementary. I'd like to see Heiman utilize his vocals more too, but this song doesn't really call for it and it would sound out of place. I'm not really a fan of nu-metal either, but there's much worse out there to say the least haha. This is much more than just power chords and just about every band in the world has at least a few songs with emotional lyrics... more often than not it makes them better.
Some substantial points, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's out of the nu-metal neighborhood - the mic distortion adds all the emo undertone you need in a Fallout Boy song, and while there may indeed be much further from true metal than Heed, I wouldn't say that it's better to be poser in the metal genre than to suck outside of it. In fact, that kind of crap infuriates me worse, because it's akin to being attacked on your home soil. At least other crap doesn't dress up and call itself metal
Cynic might not be QUITE spineless, but I'd hardly call them metal, and yes - it's largely due to their lack of believability as per their equal lack of edge. Heiman was a vocalist of great potential who squandered his ability and in effect failed to reach and sustain his potential because he was inhibited by himself. Is it okay to wish to be successful? Absolutely. Is it okay to wish to become successful doing what you love, and using your inherent talents and abilities to achieve said success? Of course. But to pretend to be something you are not and to deny yourself of true self-expression but to still call yourself an artist, is a charade.
Um... Isn't leaving Lost Horizon because to express yourself better technically expressing yourself? He'd be pretending to be something he isn't by staying in Lost Horizon.
If indeed his self-expression sounds that average and mundane with the amount of natural talent he undeniably has, then it is a waste of said talent. Well, I agree with you. Lost Horizon was a better utilization of Heiman's voice than Heed, or that new project of his - Lavett, which goes even farther into mainstream.

Daniel Heiman is the best singer in the world IMO. He made a stupid decision to leave Lost Horizon for Heed, but i still enjoy to both Heed and Lost Horizon. Heed broke up and now Daniel is working in a new band called Lavette (lame) or something like that. I dont blame Daniel for leaving those bands though...he just wants to be famous. Lost Horizon / Heed didn't attract enough people, unfortunately. Probably because Power Metal isn't popular enough.
Heed is so much better than LH, the songs are way more catchy and are of higher quality. Daniel Heiman is perfect for this band. I'm only a bit worried about the new album, this album was so perfect.

I'm a faithful Lost Horizon buff since 2003, their two albums are outstanding!!! Unique style ,sound, lyrics, message !! Hadn't listened to such a great albums(in fact 2) since helloween's "Keepers"... After leaving LH ,heiman recorded 1 album with Crystal Eyes, no wonder this band also rockz.. Whichever band Heiman is in, it's worth my support& respect!! Great job guys!!

Daniel Heiman is an excullent singer. I don't mind the backing music of Heed as it gives them more of independance. My main complaint is Daniel adding harsh vocals. That HAS to go!!! I don't mind the believe of as he said "making heavier music with still melodic vocals", that is fine but please do us all a favor Daniel and take out any harsh vocals and sing like the great singer you are!

This is actually one of their better songs. He actually SINGS here. When I went on their myspace and listened to a handful of songs... most were shit. Mostly screaming... not badass Lost Horizon wailing, but like... screamo screaming.
The audio quality on this video is very poor... it sounds fuzzy, but its not like that on the CD.
To bad the band never released a second album.. they were amazing and i sing all their songs by heart ;o

Fanboys? It was an alright band. But it was a fuck of a lot better than Heed. It sucks to see a talented vocalist go from power metal to nu metal, which can't even really be called metal given that it's so watered down and craptastic. The word fanboy doesn't apply at all, as the equation for selling out and being a poser is universal, and he fits the fuckin' bill. Be angry at someone else for it, asshat.

Well, I agree with you. Lost Horizon was a better utilization of Heiman's voice than Heed, or that new project of his - Lavett, which goes even farther into mainstream.
I also agree with thehollow89. Can't believe that someone, actually, prizes himself for speaking his own native language better than the foreigner. I like Daniel Heiman as much as every power metal fan out there, but i am gonna be different and say i prefer the heavier stuff of Heed as opposed to the keyboard driven melodic stuff from Lost Horizon, i do like Lost Horizon though :)

Daniel Heiman is the best singer in the world IMO. He made a stupid decision to leave Lost Horizon for Heed, but i still enjoy to both Heed and Lost Horizon. Heed broke up and now Daniel is working in a new band called Lavette (lame) or something like that. I dont blame Daniel for leaving those bands though...he just wants to be famous. Lost Horizon / Heed didn't attract enough people, unfortunately. Probably because Power Metal isn't popular enough.

I'm a faithful Lost Horizon buff since 2003, their two albums are outstanding!!! Unique style ,sound, lyrics, message !! Hadn't listened to such a great albums(in fact 2) since helloween's "Keepers"... After leaving LH ,heiman recorded 1 album with Crystal Eyes, no wonder this band also rockz.. Whichever band Heiman is in, it's worth my support& respect!! Great job guys!!

Daniel Heiman is an excullent singer. I don't mind the backing music of Heed as it gives them more of independance. My main complaint is Daniel adding harsh vocals. That HAS to go!!! I don't mind the believe of as he said "making heavier music with still melodic vocals", that is fine but please do us all a favor Daniel and take out any harsh vocals and sing like the great singer you are!
