ya most of thee are conscripts with some weeks of training(a couple or maybe a bit more)
the NPA is reviving a dormant group of elite riot policemen called the baek gol dan who supressed riots forcibly in the 80s 90s. but with more controlled training. 6 mnths of training now... they are planned to replace the common riot police in early-mid 21 century...
There are not real police officers, those are kids who join the South Korea army. Anybody, who have no idea the Korean society, ask me, information dealer.
bullshit. when labor workers gather in masses with iron pipes and molotov cocktails and use them against police, other civilians, or public buildings, then they are criminals. no matter what reason they have to do that. let's say you have a abusive father and you kill him for your "right" does that justify the patricide?
no, protestors in Korea never riot for the fun of it; dat means they dont attack the public or public buildings korean riots arent like riots in the west where chavs go around vandalising a town
guns are illegal ONLY FOR CIVILIANS IN KOREA. does their armed forces have guns? and their police force? dont be stupid. the only reason they dont use guns against the rioting crowd is because the korean government doesnt want to go through the nightmare of dealing with the human rights organizations in and out of the country as well as the united nations.
biohax -- you are an ignorant. all korean males must serve 2 years in service to their country - army/navy/marines/police ect...
75% of these are not even professional policemen -- just a bunch of kids between the ages of 18 and 24. Most don't even want to be there. They would not even be there except for the riots. look it up before opening your mouth --- in most cases your initial reaction is completely wrong and possibly based off of misconceptions
i think that this is crazy, but the police did the right thing. To keep order for the safety of others that might have been stuck in the middle of this riot. Do not think that i hate the labor union guys, I respect their right to speak freely, but there is a fine line between protesting and rioting.
police don't go out on a regular basis looking for random people to beat. like thompson said about the death of ruben salazar, "It was tragic, of course, but tragedies like this are inevitable when crowds innocent people allow themselves to be manipulated by a handful of violent, cop-hating anarchists"
punks kind of piss me off actually. i made the name while i was high. it was supposed to be some shit about communism, but that's beside the point. cops aren't just a group of violent sadistic assholes, no matter what anti-flag tells you in their shitty songs. cops keep your ass safe. sometimes they're for you, sometimes they're against you, but disagreeing with someone doesn't mean you should bludgeon them
What part of Seoul did this particular riot take place? Back in the 1980s you could sympathize with the demonstrators since they were fighting for democracy under corrupt rule. These days, I see these videos and I feel bad for the police. The tactics have changed since teargas is no longer an option. Back in the day it was worse. The police are much more restrained and that's why seeing these protesters pisses me off.
cos in 1980 in korea, soldiers and police killed civilians with guns during riots and so there was an uprising and everything got into a mess.There have been quite a few rebellions in korea recently, so government is trying to keep peacen between police and protestors;
the police tactics are sloppy, with such a serious prolonged engagement and heavily armed opposition. armoured vehicles are in order to spearhead a drive through the rioters if not utilised as defensive bastions to prevent rioter advance. Rubber bullets are last resort, high pressure water and tear gas would have been just as effective, in my opinion.
redpunk, u are right the police r just doing their job: to keep order. I feel for the police. Nirkinie u r a hero for wanting 2 move 2 Korea and join the police force.
If it was after me, I'll shoot all those rioters with at least non-lethal bullets. The riot police is too soft and the rioters feal it. Just shoot them with wooden bullets, then use electrical shockers to disable them. Poor strategy on police side, and as a proof, they use the shields to fight back as a stick. Poor soldiers. They need a retrain watching Spartacus !:)
It's been 3 years since I've been to Korea, but I wonder if the Riot Police are still college students doing their 2 years mandatory service instead of the military? I think I remember talking to one of the guards near the US army base in Seoul saying that.
Were these Korean workers a tiny bit upset having their jobs exported due to NAFTA type agreements? Were some Korean farmers upset when cheap US taxpayer subsidized corn, rice, and wheat flooded their country and drove them off their farms? This is what Clinton"s NAFTA did to Mexican farmers. Our factory farms are taxpayer subsidized. The US flooded Mexico with cheap wheat, corn, etc. The small family farmers could not compete.
doesn't mean they should beat the cops with sticks. how the hell is any of this the police's fault? they don't have much of a choice if there's a riot. if people start breaking shit they don't look at the motive for it and decide whether it's moral or not. the only thing they're interested in is stopping it so that people don't get hurt
you guys should look how the European countries deal with protesters... there is human rights concept, but there is national security concept too... all over the West there are rubber bulletes, tear gas, horses and sometimes even the cars that break the protesters lines... to disorganize the front lines, ussually the most violent... i know that politics prevent you guys from actually have what you need, but maybe a general protest or at least a memorandum would change that
Working class heroes : how many victims does the police has made in history? They're not just following the orders, they are following the ruling class order. Stand tight class pride!
just let the fucker do his job. these people were trying to beat them with sticks. just because cops are supposed to protect you it doesn't give you the right to bludgeon them. and show some respect for your cops. some of them may be horrible excuses for human beings, but it doesn't mean you should vilify the rest of them
But I read text from the library of congress, and some random sites, that the South korean police have a history of beating and killing protesters, beating and using torture as a form of interrogated, some would die in the process of being interrogated. Some were political prisoners, some where not.
With this following comment, I do not to dishonor any fallen riot police officers, I do not want you to feel like I am insinuating that you or any of your comrades are involved;
Originally, i desperately wanted to know why the riot police where so underarmed, why they only get shields to fight of iron, bamboo, sticks and rods; malatov cocktails and flaim thrower and other deadly improvised weapons.
How else are you going to contain the protest, with only shields and batons? And it is a serious crime here too, but we just can't kill people who're trying to kill us.
I have a pdf file that illustrates the chain of command. It goes from "Minister of Home Affairss" down to the " Riot, Combat, regular police, etc.. -Dave ( thinks serious political reform is in order)
why wont the KOREAN police go to the organizer place and kidnapp him or dispose him, waste his life so that next time it will be a less crowded and less organized riots. in the philippines we use water cannons and batons... worse case scenario... the riot leader will be "dispose" so-to-speak.
Your equipment and crowd-control tactics are extremely poor. Where is your tear gas, rubber bullets, baton charges, water cannons? Your visors on your helmets are poor (easily grabbed because of the bars), you lack transparent shields..everything looks pretty second rate. No wonder your cops get into trouble so often. Is it because you're all conscripts? Protesters should never be allowed to come that close to you. Also you guys do a terrible job of staying in formation.
Tear gas: banned. Rubber bullets: banned. Baton charges: banned. Helmets: Had extreme problems with breaking "unbreakable" bulletproof plastic visors. Transparent shields: We hate them. They offer just as much protection as you would get from holding a piece of paper against a knife. Formation: It's really hard, you know. You sound just like our captain. =)
you don't know about the reasons. if there's no one in the government interested in your demands, you have to make it another way. (probably this way is not the best, although)
it makes me feel psyically sick how people could do this to officers who are just following orders and serving their country.... disgusting... my hear is with the police..
Just fallowing orders and serving their country huh? That excuse didn't work for the nazis, what makes you think it would work for anybody else? I guess getting paid to "keep the peace" translates into a lincense to do anything. Well fuck that, and fuck the police.
