  • mine did the same exact thing..i brought it in to a shop to get the idle adjusted and the knock was only there for a night after running it hard. it went away and now runs smooth as ever. idk what to tell you man..adjust the idle.

  • wow good luck i hope to see a vid soon

  • my opinion is cam pulley or a engine pulley i had a weird noise close to that took off the cam gear cover tightened the bolts and took off the valve cover and tightened all the cam shaft bolts and it was gone but huh try what you think first

  • @cubcadet1983 Well..two years later, this motor is in my back yard with a rod out the back. I discovered two spun rod bearings and while trying to make it to my buddies garage to pull the motor, a rod shot out the back. No big deal as I was trying to pull it anyway. Got a 600+ build going in this now. I really wish I would of known then, what I have gained in the last 2 years. Anyway...I am hoping for 600whp on pump on the HTA3586.

  • it sound like a lifter or the oil jet lifters that exspand when oil pressure hits through the head. a couple of them could be stuck or a rod knock. sounds more like the lifters though. ive owned many dsm man :) hope you fixed it by now? ya

  • Ohhh! This is piston problem!! No rod and bearing, no crankwalk, etc ......

Piston cower is broken (or sleazy), piston swing to cylinder.

  • sounds like bent valves to me i ran into the same problem

  • HEY I NEED SOME HELP i got a 95 talon ESI with a blown 420a engine and i bought 2 used 4g63 engines off of 1990 ESI eagle talons and i want to swap the blown engine with a 4g63 non turbo... is it hard? will i need custom fabricated engine mounts? will i need a 4g63 ECU? and wich way should i face the engine? if i face the exhaust to the rear like in the 95 talon my oil dipstick will be behind the engine so should i face it the same way as in a tsi? and will i need the old transmission and axles?

  • @94VDUBgolf

No offense bud..but your wasting your time + money...Your going to spend all that money trying to peice everything together and it isnt even the 4g63T. You have to remeber you wont just need the engine mounts, you need proper trans, ecu, wire harness,ect..You might as well get a 4g63 turbo motor and drop that in. You see them all the time for sale with the tranny attatched. Slap a 16g or shit, even a 14b and you will not regret going turbo'd. Trust me..slap a turbo on that thing. FTW

  • @littlerazcal1 yeah ive changed my mind and im selling the 4g63's and just gonna slap a 420a in there so i can get it back on the road quickly

  • @94VDUBgolf

Man.....Just get a 4g63 T..You will not be let down..These platforms are simply awesome. These motors are just plain sick when it comes to making power. Look at some of these videos on here. Do what you wish, but i hope you will just look on CL and get someone junking his DSM and grab the motor. 4g63t FTW! GL

  • @94VDUBgolf Just turbo the 4g63 then...DO NOT THROW THAT POS 420A back in..

You can still turbo the reg.4g63 . Just takes some small mods. Go on DSM tuners.com for all the info you need. Be careful cause you'll get hooked on it! 4G63T FTW.

  • thats rod knock, if the seller just installed new bearings without any other prep work then it was a band-aid long enough to sell it to you.

  • if you found out what it was already please let me know! im so pissed with my car i spent like 3500$ after it was all said and done im driving up to the machine shop this thursday that did all the work on the head and block to see what they think it is

  • my 1990 talon tsi awd sounds that exact same way and i just did a full engine rebuild top and bottom end 1000kms ago the only things that weren't new were the crank and the roller rockers but i did machine the crank.. bad timing wouldnt make that noise though and if the timing on the belt was off your car would be missing like a bitch which its not, the sound going away when it warms up leads me to belive its piston slap. mine doesnt go away when it warms up though im thinking piston pin

  • this may be a late comment, but if you are still fighting with this,it sounds to me like it did spin a bearing, they are fairly easy to replace on our cars

thats just my opinion though brother, good luck and i hope you get it fixed and btw, props on a good looking dsm

  • Doesnt sound like rod knock, so thats good.

My 6bolt had rod knock once... real fun time.

  • yo thats definetly your valves are bent, it might have to do with your timing belt, it should need reservice every 100,000 miles or so

  • Im ready to dig in to this thing now that the holidays are over. I am hoping its the head but why do you say its bent valves? These are new valves and guides. Do you think when he put the motor in and he ran it out of time , it bent the valves? How can you tell. Why does it queit down .? Im about to crack this open in a few days. Thanks

  • @manuelbou you dont have any idea what you are talking about.

DSM timing belts are supposed to be replaced at least every 60k and if it had bent valves it wouldnt be running, the car has rod knock.

  • @manuelbou fucking tard. Its not bent valves. dont comment if you dont know jack shit about cars. It could be one of many things. If it goes away when the car heats up it could be piston slap. If its constant and seems to go with the rev of the engine which it does, it could be a worn connecting rod bearing Its nothingfrom the valves or lifters I can say that for sure. The noise from the wheel well def sounds like either your p/s pump,or coolant pump bearing.

  • well bro my 93 gst taps like this only when its cold after it warms up its stops but it use to never do it up tile 1yr ago so im trying to figure mine out also im probably going to rebuild the head all brian crower performance and as far as the sound coming from the tranny sounds like a throw out bearing not sitting firm enough against the pressure plate on mine i slightly press my clutch and it stops so i guess it might have to do with my clutch slave or master cylinder not sure yet

  • The engine knocking is loud enough that you should be able to locate it with a stethascope(sp) Even though the previous owner said the rod bearings are new, my guess is it's bottom-end. Rebuilding a bottom-end is more than just new bearings, its machining the crank and the rods as well. Again from personal experience I've tried to just 'slap some new bearings in' and the result sounded exactly like that.

  • Yea, it F'n sucks how people are sometimes.I know the rod bearings are not anywhere near a rebuild, but It sounded good at the time and know I am putting this story all together, he probobly had a bad motor and tried the quick fix..Sucks..Do you think it could have to do with a bad balance shaft delete kit? I guess the only way to see if it is up top is to pull the head and see the condition..What do you think the noise is bottom end? I dont think it is crankwalk..Thanks for all your help.

  • It shouldn't be crankwalk, that was contained to the first few years of the 2G's. No smoke is a good sign, that the sound gets better when the car is warm is also a good sign. Without having the stethascope on the engine block to pin down where the noise is coming from, you can at least try replacing the lash adjusters. If it sounds more in the top to you; and you have a better chance of knowing where the sounds is coming from, the lash adjusters are a prime place for that type of noise.

  • If the previous owner didn't bleed all the air out of the lash adjusters when he did the valves; (I think I remember you said he did the valves) they would make that noise. If you're pretty sure it's coming from the top. Check DSMTalk/DSMTuners for "Lash Adjuster." There's posts about how to 'fix' them, how to remove them, and replace them.

  • Does the rattling noise coming from the transmission get better/worse/change when you push the in the clutch? The intermediate shaft bearings are a weak link in the drivetrain in 2G's. I've not owned a GSX but the F5M33 (FWD) transmissions have similar internals to the W4A33 (AWD). My transmission made a similar sound at ide with the clutch out before the intermediate shaft bearing failed. (Not pretty, ate a hole through my end case and destroyed the midcase bearing races)

  • Yes..It stops when the clutch is depressed..It is a 1G but probobbly the same deal as tranny's go..Sorry to hear about your hole in end case..This is exactly why it is parked and why I posted this video..I cant afford that to happen to me..I think I have way bigger problems to deal with first..lol

  • The lower sound sounds like its definitely clutch related. When did you last check the timing?Could be your rockers, after it gets lubricated,it goes quiet. The 3 minute high idle is ok though.depends how cold the motor was..Lemme know

  • I havent checked the timing yet..Its been sitting in my driveway while I search, and get opinions on what it may be...I just dont have the damn money...Anyway...I think its the clutch also. Deff. tranny related. I am praying the tapping is the timing or something like the rockers. Could it being out of time make it knock like that? If the cam position sensor was installed wrong could it make the motor knock? Let me know..Oh and thanks for the honest..serious...opinion!!
