This is mearly a short example to show you how common it is to see a footer downbound.
Indeed, you nailed the location. It is kind of tight meeting another vessel here. Small fishing vessels are a major problem as you have described. Many fisherman that wait until the last minuet do not realize that a ship that large can not steer around small fishing vessels and they can not turn out of the way at the last second not to mention that there is very little deep water and most ships have to stay as near to the center of the river as possible.
I think I recognize where this is at. Where the Basset forms. Harsens Island to the port, Squirrel Island to the starboard. Same spot my dad and I were fishing and the James R. Barker rounded this bend. We couldn't get the engine started. Of course, we're drifting downstream toward the ship. Barker gave us the 5 short blasts. I nearly jumped for it, but thankfully the engine finally started. It was close!
