My Mother used to date Henry back in the old days. She always spoke fondly of him, and from what I gather, still carried a torch for him till her last day.
Written by Henry Strzelecki when he saw Tex Ritter in his western duds, in a cafe in Birmingham Al. First recorded by Henry and bro Larry 1959 in the group 'The Four Flickers'on Lee Label from Memphis..Jerry Woodard October 1960..Murry Kellum 1963 (other side 'Gotta Leave This Town' by Kellum's buddy Glenn Sutton who became a major songwriter/producer) also The Kingsmen 1st album 1963...And on the 'Beach Boys Concert' live album recorded in Sacramento Dec 1963. Album released in Oct 1964..srj
The original recording was by "The Four Flickers" a group with the songwriter Henry Strzelecki and his brother. Info on That's All Rite Mama: Long Tall Texan webpage. Don't know how to post a link. Google it.
Wow this really brought back some memories! My dad & his friends used to sing this to me when I was little since I was a long tall texan....thanks for having this on here.
I remember Murray Kellum's hit, but didn't realize the original is Jerry's version. I have a cd by the Gestures, a group from Mankato Minn., that also did this song. Sounds like something Ray Stevens or the Coasters would do tool. Thanks for posting!!
There are 25 songs, digitally remastered, of his. Can be purchased through Wal-mart! As a collector it wouldn't help you, but just to listen to would. Thanks.. Saw Jerry'd brother today. We still stay in touch!
Thank yoy! Jerry was a wonderful friend and fellow musician. He had a lot of good recordings. When I feel better I will try to make a vid of all of them.
