  • Fkn amazing!!! TY for sharing this......Peace I had the pleasure to meet Mark a couple years ago and it was incredible!

  • Wooooooow... i think my mind just blowed up! can't hold on to much epicness

  • Comment removed

  • Now, this is what you call ROCKIN' OUT! .

  • i have been playing drums for over 40 yrs and this still amazes me. it is physically exhausting to play like this. Don is one of the best drummers that I have seen

  • I PLAYED BREWER'S SOLO, BEAT FOR BEAT, AS AN 8TH GRADER IN OUR JR. HIGH TALENT SHOW & WON 2ND PLACE.

  • The best bass line ever

  • Tight rolls; Buddy Rich-like/old school kick ass drumming...love it! What's up with Mel's strut lol..

  • long before there was David Lee Roth there was Mark Farner...look at his clothes in TNUC and other great songs and tell me DLR didnt take this. also, Don Brewer, one of the best rock and roll drummers ever

  • Saw this group twice, 1973 and 1975...I had forgotten how much energy they had! Don Brewer wasn't the best from that era, but he was very good...more than that, SO much drive. Brewer owned that stage!

  • DONNY BREWER THE BEST DRUMMER

  • to the girls that broke my heart TNUC ! nice triplets

    /\_';...;'_/|\

  • I love the little Indian dance Mr. Farner does just before the second verse. Only an Indian can move like that.

  • @rockman1754 YES HE IS. He's an animal on the "skins"

  • So true very under -rated he could throw off a drum solo just as tasty as Bonham could

  • Check out the bass line Mel Schacher throws down from the start until the drum solo starts. Man that's some wicked good shit!

Mel has to be the most under rated bass player of all time. The man kicked ass!

  • Thank god Mark Farner didn't get a ' fro like the other two guys !

  • That is the REAL GRAND FUNK R.

Wish they were still together. Before it is too late guys. Like what happen to the Beatles. Too late when John was gone.

  • Click away after 3:08. The drum solo is boring. Band cooks up 'til then. Great tune, but lose the drum solo.

  • @brianallancobb Totally agree ! The most dynamic prefomance I ever seen ,, until the drum solo.

  • @47tooter

    Ah, the self-indulgent early 70s...

  • @brianallancobb Lose the drum solo??? NO NO NO!!! LOL. What you gotta do is close your eyes, and it sounds like a train comin. If you like trains.

  • @estyle40

I do like trains. I don't like the drum solo.

  • @brianallancobb LMAO!!! Nice comeback.

  • @estyle40

Truly, this is one of the most dynamic performances ever.

    Until the drum solo.

And I love the song title.

  • @brianallancobb Title is badass, right?!? You`re not crazy about solos at all, or just THAT one? Curious.

  • @estyle40

I generally think drum or bass fills shouldn't be for much longer than, say, eight beats, because, unlike guitar, horns, vocals, they (the drum and bass fills) are usually unaccompanied.

My ideal song would be one with a swing beat, a walking bass, a guitar going chunka-chunka, with drum and bass fills sprinkled throughout.

I'm surprised Grand Funk was to get away with the song title in 1969 (even though doofus me had to be told how to read it).

  • @brianallancobb LOL. Nice way of lookin at it. You a musician, too?

  • @estyle40

Grand Funk may have got away with it in 1969 because of it being stated as an acronym. The Nuns United in Christ?

I am a musician. Electric bass, acoustic guitar, piano. Most comfortable on acoustic guitar, although I've been drifting to piano and bass as I've drifted to jazz.

Have been paid a grand total of perhaps a thousand dollars in my life for playing music, so I've looked for other ways to keep hearth and home together. :-)

  • @brianallancobb Impressive!!! Yeah, I never made much of anything from my music, either; thats why Im drivin a bus to pay the rent. But still, it keeps ya outta trouble. Yet, its still kinda nice to play. Im a bass player myself, and songwriter. Many times, many ways, I used to wonder, "What if..........". Now its more just for fun than anything. Keep it up!!!

  • @estyle40

    I'm a driver, as well. I push a hack.

(I was a computer programmer for fourteen years, but pushing a hack is more fun, and as far as I know, you only go around once.)

I think a lot of making it the music biz is like the BTO song, "if you get in with the right bunch of fellows."

Would either McCartney or Lennon have made it without meeting each other? It's unclear.

Similarly for Mark Farner, Terry Knight (the producer), Don Brewer, and the bass player.

  • @brianallancobb Nice way of lookin at things once again. Sometimes I guess it takes a little bit of luck when you`re tryin to be famous as well. So, I guess while we`re still breathin, we keep workin at it, and who knows? And I do agree: its hard to say what would`ve happened if Lennon/McCartney had not found each other. But I do believe that every musician that has come down the pike since that very day is all the better for it........

  • @estyle40

Lennon and McCartney are why I play music. I play all the instruments The Beatles played, including harmonica, although I haven't had a kit in a long time.

  • @brianallancobb Brilliant!!! Why settle for just one instrument, right???

  • @estyle40

It inhibits my not getting very good on any single one, but I think makes me a better musician.

In decreasing order of talent and facility:

    Arranger

    Songwriter

    Singer

    Acoustic guitar

    Electric bass

    Piano

I have a hard time getting a good sound out of an electric guitar (when one is available), although lately I've found that with the thickest strings and the lightest pick available and the volume so high it feeds back if the strings are left uncovered, it's all right.

  • @brianallancobb Well, I like it! And I wish you all the best in everything you do.

  • Its not Moby Dick

  • to Mr d2u - doesn't that sound like the entire money grabbin frickin country ? These guys are rockers that play their hearts out. Wish there was more like em.

  • This is the real life incarnate that inspired Animal... who in comparison, really is just a muppet. What a champ. This is amazing energy.

  • This solo was edited on this video and the album wasn't it? I couldn't tell on the record but it was obvious in the video.

  • Don Brewerのドラムソロ見て、今夜はもう寝よ。

  • El mejor solo después de Budy Rich

  • They don't make bands like this anymore - a lot of U2 type posers but nobody wants to work this hard.

  • @mrd2u2u2sucks check out dewolff, band from the netherlands with very young people. They wanna work hard.

  • This drum solo gives Moby Dick a serious run for its money!

  • @Jeffpcmt This doesn`t compare with Moby Dick; they are BOTH bad-ass!! Better than Justin!! lol

  • @rockman1754 Donny Brewer is one of the greatest drummers of all time!

  • Had a kit just like his, learned every single note. Still use lots of his stuff, when i play or solo. Very few Drummers can be named by even a big music fan. Even fewer

American-drummers. Hope I'm one of 'em. Love ya'll music lovers

  • ..............tiembla¡¡ sinfonica de austria...... hay biene grand funk railroad

  • hey mayb this is a dumb question but wat is TNUC?

  • @dylster21502 ....you need to spell t.n.u.c. the other way around (c.u........etc.)

  • @istimewa1x ooooo lol... wow... UHHH DAHH!!!! lol thanx

btw, u cuda just said C.U.N.T. lol

  • Good pocket player.

    Ultra-limited vocabulary on the kit.

  • @Easleytee Show me something you can do better.

  • In 1976 we were celebrating our music our Bicentennial our Pride and our persuit to happiness. Europe was a Joke in the this Business they would sit in a jaw drop gauking at American Artists period. Only the UK and they drouled as to get exposure here to hit the big time. It's time for a new movement to dissolve this RAP like soul parasite that is stelilizing the business to a Vanilla in the US

  • Donnie fuckiN BrEWeR US bicentennial ROCK AND ROLL AT ITS BEST.

Todays talent agents are morons using statistics as there base and dwindling the core creativity of the business down the tubes. There is talent out there it's the old cigar smoking execs that gave freedom to artists that aren't ATLANTIC, CBS Warner Bros,Columbia and Electra of old

  • best song ever. best drum solo ever. always will be

  • anyone else noticed drumming doesnt match with what you hear at 9:10 ?? :S

  • @FUllConKernUrii Maybe you should get a new computer with enough memory to keep up with the audio and video tracks.

  • Don Brewer hitting his head on those drum solo's all those years is what fucked his mind up! Hence Mark farner fuck over!

  • Wow, I remember this. The two times I saw them live, they played TNUC and Brewer did the solo. He's got to be one of the greatest rock drummers of all time.

  • Saw these guys 3 times in the early 70's without the keyboard player. All 3 shows were outstanding and Don Brewer always did an amazing solo. Without a doubt one of the greatest Rock drummers ever. This is how real rock n roll should be played!

    Bass,Drums and Guitars!

  • DAMN! THOSE ARE REAL MUSICIANS! NO BULSHIT LIKE JUSTIN BEAVER!!

  • @DISMEMBERER666 GOt that right!

  • Grand funk is awesome

  • Drumming is after all supposed to bring fun and power! Then great rock players always knew that! The days of Triplet Almighty!

  • Drumming is after all supposed to bring fun and power! Then great rock players always knew that!

  • Does anybody know the drum sizes? I'm pretty sure of 16 &18" floor toms. Is the kick 22 or 24", the rack tom 13 or 14".

  • Please Watch ANIMAL vs BUDDY RICH (The Muppets Show) play and Scream like Mr. Don Brewer on 8:02. HA HA HA HA.

  • Man, I don't know where you found this, but it is an example of TRUE American made Rock And Roll ! They made ALOT of music for only 3 dudes! EXCELLENT video!

  • POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing drum solo...can't understand why a few peeps voted thumbs down.

  • what does T.N.U.C. stand for

  • @jamesjuszczyk Think about what the lyrics are saying... He's pissed at his woman.. He's had enough of her.. hold the letters up to a mirror... TNUC

  • @bultaco111 Wow dude! 30 some years after the song comes out you finally figure it out??!!

  • @oregonlasalle you shuold be replying to jamesjuszczyk... not me.. I'm the guy who gave him a clue so he could figure it out on his own. Yes I figured it out when I first heard this song at a friends house in 1981 when I was 21. I had only heard GF's pop hits... American band, Locomotion, Some kind of wonderful... I did not know about their "power trio" days..

  • @oregonlasalle It was 41 years ago , , On Time 1969.

  • 1st five seconds sounds like let me stand next to your fire

  • @TheDavey222 true - and I am sure that is no co-incident.I am sure they wanted it to sound like it. These are too good musicians and too sophisticated to make such a "mistake"...

  • One thing is for certain. No one--and I mean NO ONE, could do these interchanges between the toms, snare and bass, like Don Brewer. He really has that technique down, pat! Any drummers out there know the technical name for what he is playing at 8:45-8:55?

  • @IwshIcldstrtover john bonham triplets right hand left hand bass and repeat times 2000000000. also you can just move your right or left hand on every other . he is going exactly small tom small floor tom bass , small tom big floor tom bass , small tom small floor tom bass, small tom snare bass. iv played the same thing many times

  • watch at your own risk... may turn you into a rock and roll addict...

  • I saw them do this Oct 1971 in Seattle.I was about 40 feet from the stage.Black Oak Arkansas was the opener. My ears rang for a week after that show.I am very impressed with the quality of this vid.

  • Well, I think they should play with more energy ...

  • @mattbastardsen Hahahahahaa! I think you should stop masturbating and listen to the tunes... try to remember you are a man....not a woman..your boyfriend should also stop touching your penis while listening!!

  • Not the most accomplished drummer as far as soloing ability but super entertaining with what he has......Loved It!!!!!

  • How could a band like this loose? - a voice like that, a groove that solid - they where inevitable. So they're not rocket science, but god they're musical.

  • this is when rock was really really rock baby...long live this era of kick ass tunes baby

  • selling GFR Live in Tokyo 1974 dvd. message me if interested.

  • nice pants !!!

  • This is true rock and roll........

  • Yeah um, I have a Don Brewer dvd and he says its a very simple meaning and not to read much into it. So I thought maybe it was for tennessee but I will bet that (12lfme12) is right. Of course Don wouldnt tell us what it meant, ha ha.

  • i have GFR in tokyo 1974 full show on dvd for sale if anybody is interested. send message for details : )

  • Ah the old "what TNUC stands for" argument...because of urban lengend I suppose either/or...Man FUNK was so brutal, powerfull badass back in the day..something happened to them when Craig Frost joined...I don't know if he was the reason for their change but their whole style flip flopped...I never liked them as much after...they are probably my 1st real "favorite" band..since I was 12...I'm still a mad, heavy, intense style player(guitar) because of these guys!GFR!!!!

  • Such a deadly song. I've never heard it before now

  • you are kidding right?

cause that's not what it stands for...at all.

  • Isn't the rock hall nominating commitee filled with a bunch of TNUC's?

  • @Tingman513 t are tnuc's ?/thanks

  • @Tingman513 Ya mean GFR hasn't been brought in yet? If not, Then yeah, they are a bunch of TNUC's. Right on man!!

  • @Tingman513 AMEN

  • t.n.u.c. doesn't stand for anything, it's cunt spelled backward

  • oh by the way... Grand Funk was one of my favorite bands growing up!! they defenitly ROCK!!!

  • well...ummm let see...he sure can play triplets very well( bass-fl. tom-hi tom- snare) thats about ALL he does for like 6 minnutes. no rudimentary value at all...nope hes not overrated!

  • unless you can compose a solo and play it in front of fifty thousand people, compose songs sing lead vocals sing back ups and write lyrics, shut the fuck up,you know what, your an asshole!shut up asshole nobody wants to hear what you have to say, why?because your an asshole, everytime you open your mouth it farts.asshole!

  • this is for francodummer1

  • 8:46!!!! That is one fast and smooth triplet!! Not quiet as fast as the solo on Grand Funk Live nor as long but still beyond awesome!!!!

  • VERY, VERY, VERY underrated drummer. He is my fave!!!! Always was and always will be!! There are drummers more technical, yes.But just the way he attacked was and still is awe inspiring!! Thanks Don for just being a drummer!!!! You ARE the man!!!! And thanks for an EXCELLENT post!!!! FIVE *s!!!!

  • Tommy Lee ripped off his act. Just kidding but seriously he was highly influenza ... I mean Influential . They are so sweet three of them sound like 5 guys.

  • grand funk may have inspired motley crew,, many bands from the 80s claim grand funk as their idols.

  • As they should. I myself live in Detroit and the influence they have can still be heard in the music coming out of our city and for that matter the entire rustbelt i.e. white stripes , the Black keys and many more bands that start with THE. I dig them all .

  • No One!!!!!!!!!!

  • i would like to see if any 3 man band today could compare to this band in talent and raw energy live.....any recommendations?

  • Triumph & Rush. There was another rock/blues, Mahagony Rush. They rocked!

  • the only band to come close to these guys live is the WHO.

  • go mel go!

  • i was 13 when i saw these guys at the Long Beach Arena in 1970 - they were godhead - one of the best power trio bands of all time...lost interest in them when they became mega stars. i am now "rediscovering" them, and welcome the flashback!

  • Ktck ass Don

  • What a band.I got to see Don's drum solo 1971 stationed at Ft. Bragg. The boys kicked some ass that night. There music drove Viet Nam out of our heads for awhile.GFR lives!!! PEACE BROTHER.

  • these guys are rocking !!!

  • Mel's last name is pronounced like you are saying "shocker"

  • i can watch this video over and over i think donnie brewer is one of the greatest drummers in the world im not taking nothing away from the other two their great too

  • @unclefuzzy98 to me it is the sound and reminds quite a bit of Jon from Led Zeppelin. I could bet Don is using some Ludwig or Rogers set. That' s what Jon had

  • great song each o0ne grand funk is great they should be in the rock n roll hall of fame i met mark farner way back when he was in that other band i would like to meet him again some day

  • Mr Asskicker!!!!!!!

  • Awesome.

  • these guys are great! but one question - just how do you pronounce Mel's last name (for that matter, how do you spell it correctly?)

  • Mel Schacher is spell S-C-H-A-C-H-E-R

  • tnuc spells cunt backwards.back in those days when the devil kept a low profile, bad words were not allowed.

  • wow... killer drum solo.... awesome

  • i love grand funk, but why the yellow jump suit..?

  • Why not?

  • Donnie Brewer!!! Really takes me back, and brings a BIG smile to me! Thanks!

  • double peddals dude, and remember they played with 3 men and got the whole arena in motion, just the three of them and that was before The Police ERA.

  • T.N.U.C. .....I wonder that that stands for, LOL?

  • GFR was the shit!!!!!

Don kicks ass on the kit!!! Bad Ass Bass playing also.

  • I like waltz tempo at any speed, who wouldn't?But,rock and roll bill haley style was 4/4 time, don't forget it!

  • this guys great,he has his triplas down

  • drummer needs to cut that bush

  • Nope. welcome back to the 70's. ( if you were ever even there. the happenin' look of the day )

these guys got as much, or more pussy than any Hip-Hop chump of today. only difference: they actually Kicked ass and played their own instruments, sang their asses off. Peace.

  • some looked good with it, he didnt

  • not sure then, he would have "looked good" with

a "fade" either. so..............to each his own. Lol

  • no he wouldn't with a fade, just shorter

  • de acuerdo con este valedor de abajo una de las mejores bandas de rock y no mamadas como las actuales nomas topen al bataco se rifa¡!

  • la mejor banda de todos los tiempos, muy adelantados a su epoca diria yo

  • they wont put that in rock band

  • another band snub by the so called rock and roll hall of fame

  • Spell TNUC backwards........awesome band

  • DON BREWER is very underated. He´s One of the best Rock n Roll drummer of all time!!!!!!!

  • It's hard to imagine a bigger GFR fan than me,

but when they brought Craig Frost into the band,

    they were done.

  • this is rock and roll...this will never be

duplicated...and regardless of the musical trend that exists and denial of a moment in time that a generation grasped I will not let GFR be forgotten.EVER.

  • i think he just lost 15 pounds of fat during this song..

  • You just can't help to smile thinking about the good old days. Drugs, sex, and RR. Now at 50 years old.....times have changed. Mortgage, kind in college, work...etc.
