@234welovethehardcore Hey, thanks for the comment. I have not looked at the comments for a very long time but I remember that most of them were negative. Thanks again. I hope this guy tours small clubs sometime in the near future.
I just love the way that peoples' attitudes to, and comments on, this song just reveal the contents of their heads that they brought with them. Physician, heal thyself. I'm sure I remember a studio version on an early album, before 1974.
some day, a white boy baby will be murdered by someone inspired by these hateful lyrics, if it hasn't happened already. is roy happy to inspire the murder of innocents? if he isn't aware of it, then he is ignorant, and if he appoves, then he is more hateworthy than anyone he has judged.
Could someone expain to me how this song isnt about race? Im no Einstein, but I think Im relatively intelligent and I cant see for the life of me how he isnt talking about race and civilization. Seems like back to nature anti-technology anti "white man" music to me. "Doctrinaire abuse"? "Barefoot dream of life" Sounds like this guy doesnt like progress to me but is willing to take advantage of the technologies it yields. It was cool to blame whitie back them. It got old. Birth rates keep rising.
It really isn't about race. It's about greed, commercialism, the destruction of the environment etc. Roy was singing this at a time when it wasn't so fashionable to be concerned about these things. "White man" is a shorthand . Roy, in case you haven't noticed, is himself white so he's not condemning white people - it's a subtler song than that. Try listening again with an open mind.
This is a white man singing about the behaviour of people like Ian Paisley, (he very nearly says Ian Paisley on the album but I notice it has been edited from the CD version).
"I hate the white man, and the man that turned him loose" (i.e. God).
And the line is "doctrinaire refuse" not 'abuse'.
You are exactly the sort of 'white man' this song is about.
Hats off roy, Got to be one of the most profound songs ever writen, blows me away every time. thanks for the post joh3

I suppose it's a sign o a good song that
it can be misunderstood so well.Quite
plainly the issues here transcend race. The poetry becomes quite ornate in a sort of ornamental lash, so the meaning
may become obscured. A look at
european civilisation over thelast
three hundred years may throw some light
on the matter.

I assume you are being ironic in sugesting that this song would inspire the behaviour you talk of, unless maybe some one just read the title.
