their are many cultures that even have more than one gender or a "third" gender (ie. hijra of india, two-spirits in native culture, xanith of oman-- there are many more).
Great vlog, and I happily, at least partially, disagree. While I agree with your assertion that our minds and perception is plastic (just have a look at Jane-Austen-period male clothing) I do not agree the sex is mere anatomy as in sexual organs etc. Sex is also forming the brain, not only by hormones, but most likely even with some rudimentary hard-wiring. How much this determines gender I do not know, but it must be more than 0% and much less than 200%.
it's amazing that you posted this. because i've watched all your guys's videos on this subject. but i'm going through the same thing, except with just sexuality. i know i'm not straight. but i'm not lesbian. and bisexual doesn't describe me right. and then if i should be butch or femme. it's been really hard for me to just figure out that i am not any of those things. i have my own thing. but it's taking alot of thought and courage on my part. thanks for talking about it.
You look especially adorable in this video. It could be the combination of the plaid scarf and sweater with the bookshelf background. It just looks super scholarly. =)
Oh. My. Gawd. Way to make a sandwich conceit. That was BRILLIANT. Like, I think I need to hang that on my wall. You are awesome at metaphors.
hehehe...actually, the sandwich correlation isn't lame at all...*smile* Great video Kade! It's very nice to have a handle on the sexuality issue because they you can just get on with life and living it!
No matter where you're from there is a gender binary. It may differ from country to country, but from developed countries to not so developed countries, women and men have "set" roles in society.
I knew that we could trust you on this topic. That was pretty much everything that has been going on in my mind gender and sexuality etc. vice and worked fantastically in a pep-talk-way.
Sandwich metaphor was awesome. Actually really helped me to understand what you were trying to say (That probably makes me mentally a kindergarten pupil but heh)
As a trans woman, I see it differently. Gender expression is a cultural thing. But gender itself is a biological genetic thing, its the way the brain is constructed and developed during fetal development. Sex is also a biological thing, but it deals with the outward physical aspects of it.
In transsexuality, because of genetic and hormonal problems, the brain develops differently to the rest of the body, creating a difference between gender and sex.
The only problem with the sandwich shop metaphor is it seems to blend gender identity with sexual orientation. Unless you meant choosing the sandwich to which you identify best, then I agree. But I think gender identity is all to often mixed up with orientation; that's why we have some people believing all gay men are just aspiring women, or all transgender straight males are just women who wanted to like women and be accepted by society.
so life's a sandwich shop and I should just get what I want instead of getting what they have...and if they have what I want then I should get that. I like the sandwich metaphor. Good job, Kade, makin' me think and stuff.
Wow great advice. I've been having some "gender" issues within the past month. I know, strange that it'd come so soon rather than there the whole time, but I think I just wasn't ready to take that leap out of our culture's norms. Thanks a lot Kade.
Kade, you are amazing. The way you just explain that it's okay if you don't fit into what people want you to fit into just makes so much sense to me. And, I love your sandwich analogy lol.
I completely agree that the gender binary is a cultural norm and I hope that we can evolve past it. There is a subculture in Japan where people are androgynous and they don't answer to any pronoun nor will they answer if you were to ask them if they are male or female...I find that fantastic and wish that our culture in the U.S. was more accepting and open after all we're all just people.
P.S. Kade- What you have to say never ceases to amaze. Oh what it would be like to know you personally.
Hello Kade... The other night I watched back some of your videos and I have to say that I am in total awe of your courage and faith. You are a true example of what is possible in all the good ways it can be. I think you have a wisdom about you that can't be bought. And you bring light to this community and my life. I really admire the work you all do for us every week you serve community and that is special. Koodos to you Kade and blessings as well.
I think this week was fantastic, and everyone had such great insight on the issue. I think you guys should definitely touch on these kinds of controversial issues more often.
thank you, to the beaver bunch, for this week =] great job everyone.

i'm sure it was nothing anyway.
great video again kade

Supposedly in the UK flipping someone off with two fingers is just as bad as flipping someone off normally. xD

rainbowtawr909: ohhh but then that's more their stupidity, most people should know that americans do their peace sign differenty...
mufcgirl93 2 years ago
The peace sign is actually palm facing outwards, though. So it's more that Americans are trying to get away from their Woodstock past.

Sometimes simple is good. Well spoken Kade.
Great analogy, sometimes even traditional BLTs want to hold the mayo!
BTW I thought the trans gender week was one of the most informative and interesting that your channel has done.

this topic is so fitting for my day today
i was walking in town and i got a group of kids shout at me 'hey are you a guy or a girl?'
i was like :|
i cant even count how many times i have been asked that in my life
even as young as 13, people still felt they had the right to ask me. and it really took me to a bad place
its just like ahhhh leave me alone!!
