But this is like smokin' opium, it totally confuses you and toys with your emotions. the ending of hostel is a kind of triumph, like yeah, let the motherfucker have it. This is far more ambivalent than that.

I really loved this movie, Takeshi Miike is one of my favourite directors of all time, and he can make some beatifully disturbing movies, it's not for the weak of stomach, and the last half hours sticks to your mind. I really recomend it.

What doesnt make any sense? When the guy in the bag goes to drink the vomit you can see his tongue slurping it up. Also a good method to be done with ex-girlfriends, put them in a bag and keep them around to feed them your vomit.

It starts as a poignant story about a widower ready to start dating again, then after lulling the audience switches gears and becomes a Hitchcockian mystery - then in its final 20 minutes hits the audience really hard - "a lethally poised Venus flytrap".
This movie was indeed a stunner - very freaky and I love when a filmmaker can do that - it's so rare these days. The thing is, I rented the DVD. I cannot imagine an audiences(especially US) reaction to this on a large screen. That would be something to see. I wonder how many people would walk out.
Adventurestud - I saw it in a theater twice, first time at its Los Angeles premier just 2 days after 9/11. So, a very moody, even jittery, audience. The place was packed (go figure). And yes, there were a lot of walkouts as the foot started coming off (heh heh). And a few months later, again in LA, I saw a matinee, mainly young guys in the audience, and they were watching through their hands. Yes, really.
I guess maybe my expectations were too high based on what I heard about the movie, but I didn't find it to be too scary. There's just that one startle scene, and this disturbing scene. All those scene-cuts to that old weirdo man weren't too disturbing either. Can someone explain why this movie is highly regarded?

What doesnt make any sense? When the guy in the bag goes to drink the vomit you can see his tongue slurping it up. Also a good method to be done with ex-girlfriends, put them in a bag and keep them around to feed them your vomit.

tehorix789 - these clips on youtube give no idea of the impact of the total movie on a theater full of stunned moviegoers. It's astoundingly powerful- but builds its power cumulatively, over two hours. It starts as a poignant story about a widower ready to start dating again, then after lulling the audience switches gears and becomes a Hitchcockian mystery - then in its final 20 minutes hits the audience really hard - "a lethally poised Venus flytrap".

This movie was indeed a stunner - very freaky and I love when a filmmaker can do that - it's so rare these days. The thing is, I rented the DVD. I cannot imagine an audiences(especially US) reaction to this on a large screen. That would be something to see. I wonder how many people would walk out.

Adventurestud - I saw it in a theater twice, first time at its Los Angeles premier just 2 days after 9/11. So, a very moody, even jittery, audience. The place was packed (go figure). And yes, there were a lot of walkouts as the foot started coming off (heh heh). And a few months later, again in LA, I saw a matinee, mainly young guys in the audience, and they were watching through their hands. Yes, really.

I guess maybe my expectations were too high based on what I heard about the movie, but I didn't find it to be too scary. There's just that one startle scene, and this disturbing scene. All those scene-cuts to that old weirdo man weren't too disturbing either. Can someone explain why this movie is highly regarded?
