I looked at the seconds indicator as the clock struck 12 and if I'm not mistaken the clock actually stops ticking seconds during this 'chiming' process. If this is happening the clock would lose almost 5 minutes a day ... unless each tick were a few thousandths of a second shorter than a standard 'second'.
@cortezopossum here's a quote from an article that explains how it does keep good time "Weirdly, the pendulum slows down or speeds up. Sometimes it stops, the chronophage shakes a foot, and the pendulum moves again. Because of that, the time display may be as much as a minute off, although it swings back to the correct time every five minutes."
@2Durr I suppose science and all civilization is from the *gasp* Illuminati. Oh no wait Geometry and Astronomy was from the devil. Yeah f*ck you ignorant punks haters of science.
Wow I have to admit this is the first time I have ever heard of this clock but what a creepy looking piece of work it is. Very sinister looking design and hardly what I would call a thing of beauty. I wonder what the intention was in this design as its very sinister.
ahhh its like its trapped into going no where only the clock also it looks like a black hole as if the time is ticking into the time the blak hole will take ahold.....?
ah I see.......I quite like being reminded how little time we have....it's helps me to make the most of things.......and you don't have to stop being irresponsible just because you're 20 : -)
great comment!!............maybe you'd like a book I have called "Enlightenment through the Art of Basketball" by Hirohide Ogawa.....with illustrations by Peter Nuttal : -)
Rich people play out whimsy like this all the time and us plebs are wowed by it but really its a series of very simple mechanisms, an illusion of intelligence. No need to spend any money making it at all a recycling artist could make a replica out of rubbish for free, but the rich are pompous and we are fools.
More importantly it has a deeper geopolitical significance than just a clock, reminds me of the globe at the vatican museum, ive asked them if it has anything to do with timetravel.
Have you at all read the construction process of this clock? Six patents were created during its construction along with the labor of 200 people. It's a worthy piece of art.
@bondita still not to sure what you mean. Had another look on Wikipedia as I had read that before...found the bit about using an explosive charge to press a thin sheet of stainless steel onto a mould underwater at a "secret military research institute in Holland."....as I thought though, there's NO mention of satanists!!!??
@bemuzic roman polanski and his movie ROSEMARY BABY...deh...i couldn't hold myself...I KNOW AT LEAST WHY ROMAN IS SUFFERING...THE TRUTH HAS TO BE KILLED IN THIS WORLD...AS ALWAYS WAS..i bet no one saw the movie. BYE BYE PEOPLE vive la france !!!!
I've always been fascinated with clocks. Not just everyday simple clocks, but unique, intriguing and eye catching timepieces. And I have to say, this is one of the most amazing pieces I have ever seen. At first the Chonophage was off putting, but when I heard the meaning behind that and the hourly chain chime, I can't help but fall in love with this clock. Sculpture, ingenuity and poetry all rolled into one. Love it!
you don't need to apologise........the thing that most interests me about the clock is people's wildly different reactions to it!!.............personally I LOVE it : -)
Someone once told me what it's like approaching middle age? I said 'since I don't know when the end is, how can I ascertain where my middle years will be. Actually I'm 40next year but I work with loads of people who think it all goes down hill after 40. I refuse to accept that there is a time limit to people's existence. The worst thing that can happen is to believe one is getting older and then live up to those expectations of being older. A self fullfilling prophecy.
not sure about there being no time limit......do you mean some kind of afterlife?....if so I wouldn't want to totally rule out the possibility, but certainly wouldn't bank on it!!!
With you on the last bit.........I intend to keep playing and doing stupid things right till the end...whenever it is!!..........................
Great video and an awsome clock! The music added a sense of impending...well, who knows.
Someone once said 'time stops everything happening at once...' Either way, just as long as I've got more years in front of me than have already passed, I'll keep on ignoring the passage of time. I always think that time should be seen as a companion, not the enemy - just so long as one makes the most of life...
cheers....I love that saying!!........you can certainly tie yourself in knots thinking about time...which can be fun!....in the end living for the moment seems to be the only thing that makes sense...how do you know if you've got more years in front of you than have already passed????
Wow, interesting! Makes me think the locust has something to do with the end of times or something (looks biblical). :P But probably not. By the way, one would think a £1 million clock behind glass would be nicked within days!
no I don't think you are wrong : -)...........here's a quote from Dr Christopher de Hamel who has been closely involved with the clock project
from its inception "I wanted it to be a monster, because time itself is a monster... It is horrendous, and horrible, and beautiful. It reminds me of the locusts from the Book of Revelation. It lashes its tongue, and flicks its eyes at you. Its bonkers." ..........mmmm I'm worried about someone stealing it : -/
