@N701RB Oh Thats not true. There are some unlimited planes that Id like to see come back. Like Critical Mass, Tsunami, and the Galloping Ghost. But the races are as good now as they where when I started going to the races in 1975. With the introduction of the Sport and Super Sport classes and even the jet class I personally think its a world class event. One thing is for sure, the Reno Air Races is a one of a kind event.
@metal4ever1965 Thats not 100% true, the majority of tsunami went into storage in a container and is now being steadily restored by his son, the pictures of the plane have been posted on the internet recently
#18 was known as Tsunami. A purpose built racer using a Merlin engine and prop assembly from a Mustang. Sadly it crashed on Sept 25, 1991 in Pierre, South Dakota killing owner/pilot John Sandberg.
super corsair was the name. it used to be my favorite along with tsunami and dreadnought.. the chino kids flew these planes. check super corsair kevin eldridge to watch what happened to this beautiful plane.
Super Corsair was a heavily modified Corsair fitted with a P&W R-4360 Wasp Major....it was awesome....there is footage of it dying a terrible death on here aswell.
It is true the Rare Bear is still the reigning unlimited class champion. But Rare Bear does not be long to Lyle Shelton any more. He did finally sell it shortly after the 2006 races. I dont remember the new owners name but running out of money will not be an issue. The Rare Bear recieved a total strip down repair. Not only that but they also have a couple of spare engines that are very hopped up. That is something that they havent had in many year.
I went in '03 when Skip kicked everyones ass like a soccer ball... can you say 513mph!! with a race average 507.105MPH!!!! Bear did that did he.... MERLINS FOR LIFE!!!
Well, a fully healthy 'Rare Bear' and a fully healthy and developed 'Dago Red' never really got to meet head-to-head. At least not yet.
But can you imagine if 'Tsunami' had survived until Thorn completed the development of the Allison-rod Merlin (Mouse) like 'Dago Red' used in 03? A Thorn Merlin in Tsunami should theoretically have walked away from either Dago or Rare Bear on their best days.
1991 was a very good race year. But the 2008 Unlimited Gold Race this year was one for the record books. Rare Bear, Strega, Dago Red, and September Fury. All 4 air craft made it to the gold. Unfortunately the Bear broke something in his engine and had to mayday on lap 4 or 5. But Strega who has had nothing but problems with breaking his engines for the last 10 years or so reigned supreme this year. Rumor has it that 2008 will be Tigers last year.
As I mentioned its only a rumor that Tiger will retire. That statement cannot be confurmed nor denied. If he does retire what happens to the airplan is a mystery also.
If I remember correctly Tiger owns several vineyards, and also has old school family money.
all these guys that race are filthy rich. many of them bought planes back in the day when it was 'reasonable' to buy one. tiger lives right up the road from me and yeah...he's well enough to retire comfortable. he's also got some other planes in his hangers. i love strega though.

What's the third machine? It has number 18. Looks somewhat like a Martin Baker, but I know it's a nonsence.

I was wondering when Tiger is going to retire. He's been at it for a long time. I wonder what he plans to do with Strega.
Also, I wonder what most of these guys do for a living to afford the costs of owning, maintaining and racing these planes.
