I see Chief O'Brian as a commando who happens to know everything about engineering :) He was one of my favourites.I can putt together Worf/Sisko/Kira/Odo/Quark/Chie­f all in the 1st place.

Why? He was the tactical officer on the Rutledge. I'm pretty sure you have to be an officer to hold that position, and neither show states that he was demoted for any reason. It doesn't make sense.

@sfs2040 it is the captain's privilege to choose whoever to operate certain stations.Chief Petty officer has the qualifications for ship weapons/ops.

I dont think,though,that any lower grade (like a crewman 1st class for example) cant do the same job,because he didnt go thru years of training. Chief Petty officer is like a guy who finished Liceal education (4 years of highschool) and then studied 2-3 years in a higher school (not College/Univeristy). I hope i didnt screw this up.

@sfs2040 Obrien was a senior chief petty officer and was a junior tactical officer, meaning he was not the chief of security or tactical manager so, he did not have to have a regular officer rank.

@wadyano because he didnt go through the academy like other officers did... Chief Petty Officer is like a Seargeant Major in the regular army.The highest rank of sub-officer ranks (correct me if im wrong,plz).

Though i understand Chief Petty Officer can have the same responsability as an Ensign or a Leutenant,though it doesnt outrank the latter.Ensign reports to him ,but im not sure since Ensign is the lowest grade of a normal officer (1 stripe).

@soldiergirl84 haha,yes! And his remarks when the situation was dire,he allways had a "sarcastic joke" at hand,didnt he ? He felt like a guy who can do serious damage to the enemy.Hardened with battle,therefore calm under duress/under fire.

Indispensable. Plus a Chief Petty Officer covers all the operations of enlisted crewmen/Petty officers (that chain of command has even more people under your proverbial belt)

@SidNightWalker Part of O'Brien's appeal is that more than any other character, he represented an average joe whom most fans could relate to. Bottom line, though, is that Colm Meaney simply is a top-notch actor who brought out the very best in O'Brien.
