this song is an absolute gem. when the boys are singing it together it sounds amazing this song is perhaps the best composed song around. thanks you Steve for writing this beautiful song.
Uriah Heap version = SHIT. Not sure whether it was painful or comedic. Couldn't get past the first chorus. I'm not a Barnesy or Mossy fan. But I do think their partnership was brilliant.
Sheesh people, chill out, This ain't Battle of the Bands.
It's a mark of respect to pay a huge compliment and cover someone else's song. Uriah Heap's recording will ensure Steve Prestwich's name will get wider recognition as the writer of this gem.
Where in the world is JB regarded as a joke of a vocalists??? Be hard to find anyone who doesn't love Jimmy, his voice and his music... The fact that Jimmy is STILL singing, still packing out concerts and can charge whatever he wants for a ticket and be damn sure they will ALL get sold out is testimount to this mans ability as a singer... Until you can achieve what he has go and listen to all the Uriah Heap you want, none of us will miss you... On a more important note RIP Steve Prestwich
Oh dear you mean their last hit in oZ? haha who cares....yeah right chart success alweays reflects quality doesn't it? What does it take it to go platinum in Oz anyway? Like selling more than 10 records? Do me af avour champ.
@gunnja1 i was going to ignore your comment, but was a little bothered by the contradiction in your statement. You dismiss chart success, but then speak about the status of a band's work and compare it to the population of a country? Does any of that matter? I'm not really bothering to defend Cold Chisel at this point simply because their songs are played on commercial radio in Australia every single day and the band always sell out when they have one of their convenient reunion tours.
If Cold Chisel made it at an international level (you know, Elektra were behind them, working hard to break the band in the US, ignoring their newely signed Motley Crue) there would be an increase people who oppose Chisel and deny their talent - which would have been fine for Chisel and their bank accounts. At the end of the day their songs are played too often on radio and the band due major sell out concerts. They really don't need to be defended against the nay-sayers.
@nzoz1982 I'd disagree with most of your comment*. If they made it at an international level/were taken seriously in the USA, there would be far more people out there who would have heard of chisel, (and not just khe sanh). Look at ACDC-less than 1/4 of the talent of Cold Chisel, but ACDC are widely renowned as such a 'great band', while on an international level, bands like Cold Chisel remain relatively unheard of.
*(only excluding the very last sentence of your comment)
@nzoz1982 ive only ever heard the same 3 songs on the radio - Khe sanh, saturday night and my baby. And theyre only played occassionally, just so the radio stations can say that they play Australian bands...
Thank you Steve for such an amazing list of music. I can't listen to any of your hits and not remember the good and bad times from my past. Though you've moved on from this place you will always live on in the music you have created. RIP mate

@gunnja1 Chisel started in 1972. Uriah heep were far below average compared to Cold Chisel as far as talent & actual music goes, and deep down, you know it.
You just wanted your pointless/worthless opinion to be heard.
@wazwazz37 Uriah heep wrote the song and yes they may have sound like crap to you but chisel only did a cover of it. Yes Jimmy can sing but watch this clip it is not the song they say it is
Ian is such an underated guitarists. He plays brilliant stuff and is overshadowed by depressed cunts like metallica's guitarist all thanks to American bullshit
Has anyone got a copy of LRB's version of this great song? It was also used for the series "Sword Of Honour" and so very appropriate for the Vietnam War era too. Not comparing them to Cold Chisel at all. They're both great renditions of this great song in their own rights.
Is it my imagination or has the base been enhanced on all this music ? I don't remember it sounding so boomy on the radio. I have original records and listen to them they definitely don't sound the same unless you crank up the base.
So glad Steve Prestwitch left LRB (which is also a great band in my opinion) and joined Chisel, ready to add this brilliant, brilliant song to the mix!!!!!!
@1sunbear That's nice. However, I wasn't trying to sway you from your own personal taste. I was correcting you on an error you made, concerning which band Steve played in first.
@nzoz1982 So sad to hear Steve passed away a couple of weeks ago. Yes he joined LRB when Chisel broke up. Didnt realise LRB used this song but have seen John Farnham and Barnsey together sining this one. Good version.
@LordOfTheFknUniverse, that riot was when the closed down the Star Hotel in Newcastle, which was a hangout for the poorer part of society back then. It was a really good place but could fire up in an instant, so they closed it down.
"Bow River", "Never Before" and something else he co-wrote with Don. He sung lead vocal on "Plaza Hotel" "Saturday Night", "Georgia" (a cover, obviously), "Best Kept Lies" and "My Baby" among others.
mate i was 1 yr old when this song was released, i still cant imagine ever putting those 4 bands mentioned below in even close to the same catergory as chisel, man they were far ahead of there time... although living end nd eskimo joe are very good
I was a bit too young to ever see Chisel, but I got right into them. This song was written, surprisingly enough, by their drummer, Steve Prestwich. Usually their songs were by Don, some by Jimmy, but Steve blew everyone away with his previously unknown musical and lyrical talent. Chisel are one of the rare bands where every single member of the band wrote popular songs.
i didn't know that about Steve - wow. To me starting as a basic pub band turning in to the best band we ever produced with such diversity in brilliant lyrics and raw energy thru Jimmy voice.
The day the Star closed down! God, that was a shocker, the best pub in Newcastle, all those different bars going right through the block. It was devastating when it closed down.
Top bloody shit, this song and this song only makes me hair stand up and gives me shivers, Mossy is HOT!!!! Hahaha i sound so bloody dinky dye sheala...
I actually started to cry when I heard Mossy. So beautiful. Just like him. I love his solo version of the song on the Let's All Get Together album. The original should have been just Mossy.
I heard the LRB version first, so I guess I'll always like it a little better. John Farnham's vocal is cleaner and the harmony is better, but this is very cool too... a grittier version.
I've had the opp to see both Mossy and Barnesy live they are both amazing musicians with their instruments and voices. This is my favourite song from Chisel.
A great song indeed. The Vietnam vets did come home 10 years older in their minds then those that didn't fight. It wasn't their fault they got sent there over there, blame the government, not the soldiers. They were only fighting for Australia, they can't be put down for that.
@HeilJohanson88 They were national servicemen. Conscripts sent to a far away land to fight America's war only to come home to a hostile public that would never understand what they had been through...
I just want to say.......... thank you one and all for your kind words. My Ally lives in my heart and always will do. Your words honour her memory. Thank you all. I miss her you know?
I have nothing to say to moronic imbeciles who cannot even open their mouths without abusing someone. However it proves to me that even rock apes are entitled to an opinion. What scares me the most is people of your limited capabilities are our future leaders. God help us all!
he's goin threw a hard time and doesnt need you fuckhead on his back as well.
and you ya fuckin low life fuck.. oo ya sittin in ur mus basement on ur fat doll bludgin ass.. you just made your self look like the biggest fuckin cocksucker on youtube for writing that.
this song has a strong meaning to it. and brithos has shared how it means to him so shut the fuck up and have respect for him.
johndory67, you're a twat. Brithos300 obviously searched YouTube for this song, listened to it, then wrote a comment to a girl he knows will never get to see it. Then a low-life like you has to write that ridiculous comment? Seriously man, grow a dick.
Knob and Seany - tell it like it is mates. Brithos has found a song with meaning. Onya too there mate. Don't let anyone belittle you for sharing your feelings. Way to go. Growing a dick is the easy bit. Growing a heart - some people never will...
This and Flame Trees are my faves of all time in Chisel. Man thanks for the memories

i didn't know that about Steve - wow.

I actually started to cry when I heard Mossy. So beautiful. Just like him. I love his solo version of the song on the Let's All Get Together album. The original should have been just Mossy.
ColdChiselRox 2 years ago 3

Awesome song, awesome band. John Farnhams band do a good version too, but there's nothing like the original.

Others have tried to cover this song, but let's be honest, none of them have come close to the original.
They split too early!!!

I have nothing to say to moronic imbeciles who cannot even open their mouths without abusing someone. However it proves to me that even rock apes are entitled to an opinion. What scares me the most is people of your limited capabilities are our future leaders. God help us all!

seanyv89 3 years ago 4
johndory67, you're a twat. Brithos300 obviously searched YouTube for this song, listened to it, then wrote a comment to a girl he knows will never get to see it. Then a low-life like you has to write that ridiculous comment? Seriously man, grow a dick.
KnobRot 3 years ago 2
Knob and Seany - tell it like it is mates. Brithos has found a song with meaning. Onya too there mate. Don't let anyone belittle you for sharing your feelings. Way to go. Growing a dick is the easy bit. Growing a heart - some people never will...
