  • This and Flame Trees are my faves of all time in Chisel. Man thanks for the memories

  • The footage at 1:02 to 1:38 was the closing of the star hotel! The pub was a beaut for live music(Kurts coffee shop ,next door was a good place to sober up).The publican said come in one & all ,free piss, no charge, thanks for your support all you Novocastrians. The band was The heroes,locals.10 mins before closing the big fat pig of a seargent, copper, pulls the plug on the band & says go home.He caused the riot, not the locals.Ray martin the next day-Its disgusting-what a total prick he is!!!

  • One of the classic songs from a golden period of Oz rock. Breaks me up every time I hear it.

  • this song is an absolute gem. when the boys are singing it together it sounds amazing this song is perhaps the best composed song around. thanks you Steve for writing this beautiful song.

  • you search the tube for great music, and invariably you end up watching another nzoz uploaded classic!

  • simply lovely, stunning and timeless

  • @KristaShows Uhmm, go on Youtube MP3 Converter.

  • @KristaShows THOUGHT ABOUT JUST DOWNLOADING THE VIDEO OFF YOUTUBE?

  • Uriah Heap version = SHIT. Not sure whether it was painful or comedic. Couldn't get past the first chorus. I'm not a Barnesy or Mossy fan. But I do think their partnership was brilliant.

  • Sheesh people, chill out, This ain't Battle of the Bands.

It's a mark of respect to pay a huge compliment and cover someone else's song. Uriah Heap's recording will ensure Steve Prestwich's name will get wider recognition as the writer of this gem.

  • Best song ever made!!!!!!

  • Where in the world is JB regarded as a joke of a vocalists??? Be hard to find anyone who doesn't love Jimmy, his voice and his music... The fact that Jimmy is STILL singing, still packing out concerts and can charge whatever he wants for a ticket and be damn sure they will ALL get sold out is testimount to this mans ability as a singer... Until you can achieve what he has go and listen to all the Uriah Heap you want, none of us will miss you... On a more important note RIP Steve Prestwich

  • Steve Prestwich should get Nobel for this song.

I love Uriah Heep version too.

  • No one pisses on Cold Chisel Uriah heeps last big song was ??????????????????? RIP Steve

  • @hootiej

Oh dear you mean their last hit in oZ? haha who cares....yeah right chart success alweays reflects quality doesn't it? What does it take it to go platinum in Oz anyway? Like selling more than 10 records? Do me af avour champ.

  • @gunnja1 i was going to ignore your comment, but was a little bothered by the contradiction in your statement. You dismiss chart success, but then speak about the status of a band's work and compare it to the population of a country? Does any of that matter? I'm not really bothering to defend Cold Chisel at this point simply because their songs are played on commercial radio in Australia every single day and the band always sell out when they have one of their convenient reunion tours.

  • If Cold Chisel made it at an international level (you know, Elektra were behind them, working hard to break the band in the US, ignoring their newely signed Motley Crue) there would be an increase people who oppose Chisel and deny their talent - which would have been fine for Chisel and their bank accounts. At the end of the day their songs are played too often on radio and the band due major sell out concerts. They really don't need to be defended against the nay-sayers.

  • @nzoz1982 I'd disagree with most of your comment*. If they made it at an international level/were taken seriously in the USA, there would be far more people out there who would have heard of chisel, (and not just khe sanh). Look at ACDC-less than 1/4 of the talent of Cold Chisel, but ACDC are widely renowned as such a 'great band', while on an international level, bands like Cold Chisel remain relatively unheard of.

*(only excluding the very last sentence of your comment)

  • @nzoz1982 ive only ever heard the same 3 songs on the radio - Khe sanh, saturday night and my baby. And theyre only played occassionally, just so the radio stations can say that they play Australian bands...

  • R.I.P STEVE

  • R I P Steve

Death maybe a fact if life, but it is still sad and painful for those left who have been touched by someones existence.

  • Thanks for the wonderful contribution you made to Australian music, Steve - gone too soon. Rest in peace.

  • RIP

  • RIP Steve.

  • R.I.P. Steve Prestwick

  • ok ok fine whatever...he was with cold chisel first...but they were known as ICE and then Orange before they were cold chisel...then for 3 years he was with the little river band but then he left and rejoined cold chisel again

  • RIP STEVE PRESTWICH

  • RIP Steve Prestwich :(

  • this song is beautiful. the lyrics are really amazing, Prestwich did an amazing job writing this masterpeice

  • @oneaussieone..."When The War Is Over " was written by Steve Prestwich from COLD CHISEL ....might wanna change your name mate ...any real aussie would have known that.

  • @wazwazz37 i have the circus animals CD and Prestwich can take credit for wrting this masterpeice which was also a masterpeice for Cold Chisel

  • This song brings tears to my eyes everytime. God bless our soldiers.

  • Best Cold Chisel song ever

  • epic song by an epic band.

a true anthem from a legendary band. cold chisel can perform any song they damn well want to perform.

  • Check out Uriah Heep covering this song....they dont even come close to the power of Mossy and Barnesy.

  • @wazwazz37 that's hardly surprising... we live in a funny world, where a brilliant band with a brilliant song is heard by far less people than a pompus English band.

  • @nzoz1982

mate Heep's version might be inferior, but in their prime they pissed all over most bands including Cold Chisel...

  • @gunnja1 You must be one hell of a boring person if you truly think Uriah Heep are that good. I'm going to sit back, watch Uriah Heep videos that were made circa '82-'85 and laugh my arse off at your comment.

They were a pompus joke... always have been a pompus joke.... one of the guys has hair which makes look more like a nun than a rockstar... have a guess which one.

  • @nzoz1982

mate wake up to yourself "82-85"? ....they've been around since 1970 and still going strong....and what about some guy's hair?..seen some of clowns and transvestites in the vids you put up? Who cares about that anyway , I judhe on music not looks, shows how shallow and vapid you are....and Jimmy Barnes is widely regarded as a joke of a vocalist...Uriah Heep are highly respected the world over Oh well go dredge another 80's MMM fodder piece of crap for the braindead masses & sheep...

  • @gunnja1

"..widely regarded as a joke of a vocalist".....by who, your no doubt limited group of friends?

  • @gunnja1 Chisel started in 1972. Uriah heep were far below average compared to Cold Chisel as far as talent & actual music goes, and deep down, you know it.

You just wanted your pointless/worthless opinion to be heard.

  • @gunnja1 I really dig Uriah Heep but your comment about Cold Chisel shows you are on some "bad sh*t.

  • @gunnja1 You are joking surely..........

  • @gunnja1 Ur a fucking tool!

  • how about you suck my dick

  • @gunnja1

Dream on, Uriah Heep are the shittiest.

  • @wazwazz37 your are so right. Brilliant stuff

  • @wazwazz37 Uriah heep wrote the song and yes they may have sound like crap to you but chisel only did a cover of it. Yes Jimmy can sing but watch this clip it is not the song they say it is

  • the moment that jimmy takes charge is so epic and emotional

  • absolute magic this song a classic for now and forever

  • I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOve this song xxxxxxxxxx

  • Huh? This is the Choir Girl video..

  • Don never wrote this one. The drummer Steve Prestwich did. John Farnhams version on the Age of Reason Album is awesome.

  • this Hit was big here in NZ too

  • Ian is such an underated guitarists. He plays brilliant stuff and is overshadowed by depressed cunts like metallica's guitarist all thanks to American bullshit

  • ian has the hottest voice i have ever heard

  • beauttiful

  • Has anyone got a copy of LRB's version of this great song? It was also used for the series "Sword Of Honour" and so very appropriate for the Vietnam War era too. Not comparing them to Cold Chisel at all. They're both great renditions of this great song in their own rights.

  • Best ever Aussie band besides AC/DC

  • who really cares , there from Adelaide South Australia, Hendon Hotel, Largs Pier Hotel, bust you all up, great times.......RFFR...

  • Ian is a brilliant song writer and guitarist but not in the same league as Barnsey as a singer.

  • Cold Chisel= awesome.

  • Is it my imagination or has the base been enhanced on all this music ? I don't remember it sounding so boomy on the radio. I have original records and listen to them they definitely don't sound the same unless you crank up the base.

  • So glad Steve Prestwitch left LRB (which is also a great band in my opinion) and joined Chisel, ready to add this brilliant, brilliant song to the mix!!!!!!

  • @1sunbear other way around... Steve left Cold Chisel (who were disbanding) and joined LRB. He contributed this song to LRB's set.

  • @nzoz1982 It's just my personal taste.

  • @1sunbear That's nice. However, I wasn't trying to sway you from your own personal taste. I was correcting you on an error you made, concerning which band Steve played in first.

  • @nzoz1982 So sad to hear Steve passed away a couple of weeks ago. Yes he joined LRB when Chisel broke up. Didnt realise LRB used this song but have seen John Farnham and Barnsey together sining this one. Good version.

  • @1sunbear Er what? Check out COLD CHISEL. LRB and Farnham are great in their own right. So is Steve & CHISEL!

  • @357HFC It's just my personal taste for this particular song.

  • @1sunbear R.I.P Steve

  • does'nt get much better than this from the 70's and 80's!

  • seriously, ive listened to this song like 5 times now! great stuff!!

  • australian music at its best, good ol' aussie pub rock.

  • Awsome

  • Comment removed

  • Ha Ha. I just realised the kids rioting in this clip are the same people now complaining about the disorderly youth of today!

Great, Great, Great song . Absolutely timeless.

  • @LordOfTheFknUniverse, that riot was when the closed down the Star Hotel in Newcastle, which was a hangout for the poorer part of society back then. It was a really good place but could fire up in an instant, so they closed it down.

  • @LordOfTheFknUniverse differencevis that its all lebo's that do it know, and nobody likes lebo's

  • Phil Small is the bass player by the way.

  • My Baby WAS WRITTEN by Phil Small. I KNOW!

  • 1 more thing, im pretty sure ian moss wrote alot of there hits... plz correct me if im wrong

  • Don Walker wrote the bulk fo them.

  • "Bow River", "Never Before" and something else he co-wrote with Don. He sung lead vocal on "Plaza Hotel" "Saturday Night", "Georgia" (a cover, obviously), "Best Kept Lies" and "My Baby" among others.

  • mate i was 1 yr old when this song was released, i still cant imagine ever putting those 4 bands mentioned below in even close to the same catergory as chisel, man they were far ahead of there time... although living end nd eskimo joe are very good

  • this was such a golden era 4 aussie music, same as now actually, because now we got jet, kisschasy, eskimo joe and the living end.

  • teambionicle how can you compare kisschasy to cold chisel or any other bands from that era

  • I was a bit too young to ever see Chisel, but I got right into them. This song was written, surprisingly enough, by their drummer, Steve Prestwich. Usually their songs were by Don, some by Jimmy, but Steve blew everyone away with his previously unknown musical and lyrical talent. Chisel are one of the rare bands where every single member of the band wrote popular songs.

  • Queen did the same, every band member wrote a top hit :)

  • i didn't know that about Steve - wow. To me starting as a basic pub band turning in to the best band we ever produced with such diversity in brilliant lyrics and raw energy thru Jimmy voice.

  • jojo licks my balls i wish she would stop fighting with bobby an just lick lick his balls

  • Ian Moss has one of the greatest male voices ever!

  • are you kidding me? he is average. jimmy is the best male singer ever!

  • The day the Star closed down! God, that was a shocker, the best pub in Newcastle, all those different bars going right through the block. It was devastating when it closed down.

  • Top bloody shit, this song and this song only makes me hair stand up and gives me shivers, Mossy is HOT!!!! Hahaha i sound so bloody dinky dye sheala...

  • Strewth!

All ockerisms aside, I think these guys pure canned awesomeness....

  • Cold Chisel i salute you

  • easily aust most talented band

out of all the absolutely amazing songs chisel had

this and flame trees were my favs

it dont get much better than mossy singing to his own guitar work

    pure genius !!!!!!

  • Í'm blown away once again and will keep getting blown away everytime i hear this song.

  • This song got me through some troubled times.

  • A beautiful classic Aussie song!!!

  • Happy birthday crotches882!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My year of birth today is my birthday April 9, 1982!!!! Woohoo!

  • happy b'day mate 27 i beleve

  • Happy belated 27th b'day

  • like this one better than the relief one

  • I actually started to cry when I heard Mossy. So beautiful. Just like him. I love his solo version of the song on the Let's All Get Together album. The original should have been just Mossy.

  • I heard the LRB version first, so I guess I'll always like it a little better. John Farnham's vocal is cleaner and the harmony is better, but this is very cool too... a grittier version.

  • It is the CLASSICS already !!!

  • a well edit vid mate

  • Chisel, the best of all.

  • !!Un Grand Son!!

  • Long Live The Chisel x x x

  • I've had the opp to see both Mossy and Barnesy live they are both amazing musicians with their instruments and voices. This is my favourite song from Chisel.

  • Ian moss is the most underrated musician, he is simply amazing

  • A great song indeed. The Vietnam vets did come home 10 years older in their minds then those that didn't fight. It wasn't their fault they got sent there over there, blame the government, not the soldiers. They were only fighting for Australia, they can't be put down for that.

  • @HeilJohanson88 Mate, you hit the nail right on the head

  • @HeilJohanson88 They were national servicemen. Conscripts sent to a far away land to fight America's war only to come home to a hostile public that would never understand what they had been through...

  • @HeilJohanson88 well said pity the ppl who were disrespectful of the efforts of our soldiers couldnt feel the same

  • Awesome song, awesome band. John Farnhams band do a good version too, but there's nothing like the original.

  • Others have tried to cover this song, but let's be honest, none of them have come close to the original.

    They split too early!!!

  • Hahahahahaha........the Star Hotel in Newcastle......man....I was there that night.......what a blast....bring the good 'ol days back!

  • New challenge NZOZ, "Conversations".

  • i'll see what i can do!

  • i always thought ian moss had the better voice

  • i think barnesy and mossy are great in their own ways. but mossy's voice makes me melt!

  • one of the top song of all time, timeless - thanks

  • why do songs on youtube always have people going on about dead relatives? you're talking to complete strangers people!

    great song by the way

  • I just want to say.......... thank you one and all for your kind words. My Ally lives in my heart and always will do. Your words honour her memory. Thank you all. I miss her you know?

  • Isnt this the clip to CHoir Girl?

  • Great tune Nzoz....Nothing beats a great old tune! My 4 year old nephew knows this tune word for word. wazzzuppppppp!

  • johndory67

I have nothing to say to moronic imbeciles who cannot even open their mouths without abusing someone. However it proves to me that even rock apes are entitled to an opinion. What scares me the most is people of your limited capabilities are our future leaders. God help us all!

  • 5*STAR5*

  • I love you Alison. Can't make it without you. Have tried so hard but just can't seem to do it right. When the war is over honey.

  • shut up

  • LOL

  • shut the fuck up you stupid cunts

he's goin threw a hard time and doesnt need you fuckhead on his back as well.

and you ya fuckin low life fuck.. oo ya sittin in ur mus basement on ur fat doll bludgin ass.. you just made your self look like the biggest fuckin cocksucker on youtube for writing that.

this song has a strong meaning to it. and brithos has shared how it means to him so shut the fuck up and have respect for him.

    you's are a fuckin pathetic

  • johndory67, you're a twat. Brithos300 obviously searched YouTube for this song, listened to it, then wrote a comment to a girl he knows will never get to see it. Then a low-life like you has to write that ridiculous comment? Seriously man, grow a dick.

  • Knob and Seany - tell it like it is mates. Brithos has found a song with meaning. Onya too there mate. Don't let anyone belittle you for sharing your feelings. Way to go. Growing a dick is the easy bit. Growing a heart - some people never will...

  • God bless you man!

  • that's a great video mix - fantastic memories of the chisel at their peak. And, hey, the song's pretty darn great too!

  • They tune the guitar down half a tone to get that perfect Mossy sound

  • bullshit they do not they tune it down more than half a tone what are you dumb

  • Man, this is an absolutely brilliant song!!

Ian Moss has the most amazing strat tone ever!

  • Bloody terrific. Proves that the Chisel can also do some mighty great rock ballads as well.

  • ian moss... brilliant
