thought this movie is amazeing and did a pretty good job showing the life of a geisha it kinda misked a geishas life an a Oiran's life togeather geisha do nothing more then preform tradishional japanese dances and sing tradushanal japanese songs and play the shamisen and do some more tradishional japanese things and in no way do they cell there bodys to men unlike Oiran's so i meen the movie was good but it made geisha seem like sluts

Steven Spielberg was not the director, it was Rob Marshall and they did practiced with a former geisha to do the dances and everything else.

Overall, is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's gorgeous.

didn't like the movie... sorry... there are too many things that don't match with the reality.for example, their HAIR STYLE, the makeup, THE DANCE, (omg i hate that dance. geisha/maiko do not dance like that), the manners. Spielberg should have study geisha's manners, and look, and everything. you can just by watching videos of TRUE geiko on youtube, understand how this movie is not well done.

Western directors often take too many liberties when depicting Asian culture themes. They try to market the film to a largely uneducated audience and those changes try to bridge the gap. The film does capture the spirit and general times of the subject of the film at least. The acting is excellent too, mostly a good film all around.

This dance in particular was added cuz the director wanted to show Sayuri's pain with dancing. Overall, the movie is beautiful, one of my favorites of all time.

i've just finished watchin' this flick...it's fookin' awesome!!!! 10 out of 10! the book is much better cos the film is the brief version of the book...whether portrayed by chinese,japanese etc..written by a white american bloke..not in japanese lingua...what's the big deal??the result was fantastic! it's not about insulting another culture race etc..it's all about embracing them, relate to them and understanding them...ONE OF THE BEST FILM EVER!!! beautiful n gorgeous!!!
