I reckon that fans are far noisier than hard drives, especially of you're using the smaller 2.5" drives that it seems this is using. Compared to regular PCs this should certainly be smaller and quieter and therefore a cool wee office machine...

Nope.

The best 2.5" drives emmit about 15 dBA idling in free air and that will increase if they're hard-mounted.

The best 120mm fans match that at ~500 RPM, without any special mounting and you can still go lower and have enough airflow for a midrange gaming-system.

2:08 Wrong. Fans can be virtually silent. Mechanical Hard-Drives are a far bigger problem for any silencer.

i actually have to agree to some extend.

No, fans will allways make noise, but YES, some HDD's will make FAR more noise then fans.

If you buy cheap ass HDDs you'll most likely get a lot of noise. best solution,

Fans can be so far below ambient that they're inaudible. HDDs can not. They need to be soft-mount and dampened and they'll still be audible and you're limited at how much you can do, because you need to keep them cool enough or your data goes bonkers.

Btw, all of my components are passively cooled. Two Slipstreams ventilate system and power supply. Both are easily drowned by my harddrive, a soft-mounted, dampened Caviar Blue.

I'm looking to replace it with a SSD/Laptop-Drive combo.
