actually, to everyone who is saying how 2 strokes are smelly, smokey, and bad for the enviroment, i just switched from a mecury four stroke to an optimax, and i get better peformance with the opti and very little smoke or smell....just sayin.
I was hoping for some comments from the maker of the video. Like how do you keep from taking off when you first start it from a cold start since it has the centrifugal clutch? I'm thinking of buying one of these for my 16 ft sailboat due to the light weight but wanted some input. My boat's manufacturer recommended a 2hp 4 stroke.
I had an 05 model, different throttle position. Worked great till one day someone, walked off with it. Replaced with suzuki 2.5 hp for $569.00 vs $949.00 Honda. But still miss my little deuce....
It is very sorry that someone walked off the motor from you. I have bought one more motor it is Mercury 5hp 2 stroke. It works great on my 10ft RIB inflatable
The formulea for torque is T=rxFx (sin) AxF, where T is torque, r is the displacement vector(length of the lever arm), F is the force vector, AxF is the angle between the force vector and the lever arm vector. Torque is a measurement of static thrust regardless of time, whereas Horse Power is measurement of power delivered over time, i.e. 550 foot-pounds per second (equivalent to 745.7 watts).
Torque is a measurement relevant to vehicles like trucks which tow heavy loads from standstill. Measurement of Torque is not relevant to boat or aircraft engines, apart from Tugboats which must deliver max thrust at slow speed through very large slow turning propellors. i.e. 2000 h.p. through a 32 inch diameter fine pitch propellor turning at 220rpm, unlike a 2000hp race boat which delivers its power through an 11 inch diameter coarse pitch propellor turning at up to 6000rpm.
A 4-stroke motor delivers its' peak torque at lower revs and a 2-stroke motor delivers its' peak torque at higher revs. If a 2-stroke motor and a 4-stroke motor are both rated at the same Horse Power, the 2-stroke will have 15% better acceleration but at MAX REVS both motors will yield the same thrust on the boat transom.
If a 4-stroke and a 2-stroke of the same H.P. are both running at low speed, the 4-stroke will use HALF as much fuel as the 2 stroke, and at high speed the 4-stroke will use 20% less fuel than even the best fuel injected 2-stroke engines.
A 2-stroke will give you a little more accelleration but a 4-stroke will give you MUCH MORE efficiency i.e. fuel economy for the same power, and without smelly 2-stroke blue smoke. For all the above reasons, 2-stroke engines have never been a serious option as car engines and even though a boat engine is only used occassionally, a 4-stroke outboard is still a superior design which is worth the extra purchase price, IMHO.
@arcanacelestia what about direct injected 2 strokes, like evinrude e-tecs? they are just as or more fuel efficient as a 4 stroke, and they don't have the smelly blue smoke either, yet they are as powerful as 2 strokes...
@carrierpilot1357. I don't have any personal experience of the Evinrude e-techs but I have noticed people on the internet complaining about the reliability of e-tecs. In the 1970s people were very impressed by the reliability of Yamaha 2-strokes and there was a saying . . . ''Mercury will get you there quicker than a Yamaha but the Yamaha will get you back home as well''. Maybe today this saying could be applied to 4-Strokes compared to the high performance 2-Strokes.
@carrierpilot1357. cont . . . The quality of the modern 4-stroke outboards is supported by the fact that mid-size fishing trawlers and shrimp boats are abandoning their inboard marine diesel engines and installing low-geared fine-prop Honda 225 outboards on the transom where they give years of continuous service. E-tecs are a rare sight on the water but if racing is you thing then maybe the E-tec would suit you.
@arcanacelestia fair enough, but the only reason I mention etecs is because my father has had one one on his boat since 2005 and it still runs amazingly well, and has never quit... I don't remember any maintenance being done on it either. Where I go to fish, I see quite a few people on their boats with e-tecs, they arent a rare sight where I live. But, youre right, reliability is more favorable than speed. in the long run, I suppose it's just a matter of opinion.
@arcanacelestia ye you can buy in to all that bull if you want to but the new fuel injected 2 strokes are buy far Superior to any 4 stroke on the market
the power a cup of gas can make it the same with a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke and the new fuel injected 2 strokes do not wast any unburnt gas like the older ones did and with 1/10 the moving parts the new 2 strokes are faster and weight less (it takes less power to push 100lb then to push 150lb and that is just fact )
@arcanacelestia i would like to buy a df2,5 with a intex mariner 4. hope, thats its a good choice, because the rhino vx34 is a little bit to slow in water where its possible to drive with a outboard motor
@arcanacelestia That's not true at all, look at the new Evinrude E-Tecs. They have better fuel economy then any 4 stroke and they are the cleanest burning motors sold. They have even won awards for burning cleaner then any 4 stroke. So you basically get the best of both worlds. You get better power and a lighter motor while having good fuel economy and clean fuel burning.
@arcanacelestia not superior desigh at all.. two strokes are dirt simple, four strokes are complicated, have more failure pionts, are made shittyer beause of cost, and need to be serviced lots ie. valvetrain, and on top of that, if you turn it upside down, its doomed... plus, you can take a 50 eyar old 2 stroke out of the forest, and if fuel and spark are good, it will run. four stroke would have stuck valves, shitty old oil, and prob lots of wear and tear.. just sayin...
i used to have that exact model on my 12ft flat bottom alum. boat.
got it up to speed pretty quick, never had an issue, and if you broke the shear pin.. there were spares in the engine compartment along with a small tool kit to repair nearly anything on the motor.
but the engine new is pretty pricey- mine came as a package w/ the boat
lol 2hp is 2hp two or four stroke as long as its rated at the prop you should be ok , i think your trying to say more torque. and four strokes are quieter and generally more fuel efficient
it doesn't come across in this video, but these engines are way too noisy for their size. they also vibrate like crazy. I would stick to the honda 5hp, or look at comparable mercury or yamahas. Honda's are great, but they missed the mark with these.
I don't think it is pointless at all I use mine on my dingy. It's easy to install from the sailboat when in port nice and light . no flushing required.
stupid honda and there gay ass 4 strokes, I refuse to ever buy any honda product ever again since they discontinued all 2 strokes, hey had the best dirt bikes around now they just all suck.
i know! Why did they go to four strokes? 2-strokes are better than four strokes in acceleration, rpm, and sound. Their only bad for the environment : (
I have Honda 2HP and Suzuki 2.5HP, that Honda is very loud and I hate it's centrifugal clutch, I like my Suzuki 2.5HP water cooled, much better outboard than Honda 2, weight is almost same.
that is a pukka little moter and looks well built, great for pottering about the water without a big weight! 2hp is plenty to get ya about with and light for mobility? great vid *Mason*
