They're gregarious, so a single penguin living by himself would be very unhappy. You'd probably have to get a bunch of them (like 15-20), and taking care of them would probably be a full-time job.

Why take them away from their mom if she is feeding them adequately? Won't she teach them at the right time to solicite whole fish from the feeders?

They take them away because if they don't, they will not learn to eat from the keepers and will be unmanageable and very aggressive. All the penguins have been raised this way to insure their proper care. -one of the penguin keepers

How do you console the parents? Look at how upset they are. If they're going to live like their parents, why do they have to be taken out?

So to clear some things up, penguins, as eggs are taken care of by their father, while their mother goes to fish. They hatch, moms come back, dads go fish. They both raise the chick. It develops waterproof feathers, then is taught how to seim and fish.

At a zoo, they don't have fish swimming around in the penguin tank, so they have to be taught by humans to fish and swim.

Penguins are pretty much awesome.

Good question, maybe it's the nature of howparents are lacking in teaching them, being in a controlled enviroment does alot of harm to animal instincts. Maybe they aren't eating normal fish, and the kind they eat are unnatural to their enviroment, It's a good question, If it's just fluff to make their Zoo look good, With strives in educating animals. Give the little babies back. I'd be one pissed penguin if they did that to me.

Because the chicks are being hand reared to make the keepers job of bringing food to them more easy. There aren't any fish just swimming around there, so they need to actually be fed by hand.

But I heard on a major documentary about penguins, and saw it for myself, that chicks and parents DO recognize each other, even in a crowd of thousands. I also observed the distess cries of the mother penguin as her home and family was disrupted. One of my wishes for the human race is that we show more reverence and respect for animals by leaving them alone in their natural environment.

I'm not crazy about zoos either, but you should know that while Emperors recognize one another by their cries, that is not the case with other types of penguins.
