Yes, very true. I have been in retail management since 1993 and have never seen it this bad. This Christmas season will be worse than last years season.....so there will be another wave of retailers going out of business. Unemployment is higher, so this season will be worse! I keep seeing more and more shops going under. Gerald is awe some! Thankfully there are a few people who speak the truth!

GC gave a good talk on here, especially on 2 things: One, individuals taking sup-prime mortgages are far from the biggest culprits, it's those financial institutions who caused this real estate bubble. Two, despite the repeated mantra by conservatives, neo & pseudo alike, this country is headed towards fascism, not socialism, as GC explained, "only the wealthy are being bailed-out, not the common person". A shopping center near where I live has been having a major overhall and expansion (still not finished)) + the office block where I work is about to have a major overall, starting November 2009 - both I assume are and will cost $millions.

So why would the mall and office building owner's I work in spend this kind of money, if it's only going to get worse in commercial real estate?

Your right, I see businesses going under everywhere. If you started your business 4-6 years ago, your dead right now. There is no way you can pay off your loans. I started my business 9 years ago, so my loans were paid off 2 years ago. I have no debts, this is why I can survive. If you have lots of debts, you are dead right now.

That can be a factor. People buy small quantities of things in convenience stores, like single cans of beer, single cans of soda, a pack of cigarettes, a small or medium bottle of hard liquor, etc. I don't see traffic, this is the problem. Big box retail, like Costco would have a much tougher time trying to sell like a 24 pack of Corona. It would be harder to sell in bulk when the consumer is broke.
