Too bad I didn't live when Jethro Tull was great, I am 15, and saw them live in Ludwigshafen. It was really cool, but they didn't play any of the SFTW songs.
The album that saved Tull, after the disappointment of Too Old To Rock n Roll, Songs From The Wood and the follow up Heavy Horses were a welcome return to form for Jethro Tull.A great collection of songs, the title track, this one,Hunting Girl, Velvet Green all Tull classics.
Ian Anderson reinvented himself and the band at a time when punk was the in thing. They survived and we never saw that space suit from 1976 again! Heavy Horses was just as good, with The Rover, Acres Wild, One Brown Mouse etc
I have mixed attitudes regarding SFTW. I liked all of side A and this song especially. But I found B side to be a real let down when compared to Side A. I also have bad memories of 1977 (album's release) and just hearing it brings back bad memories. I rarely if ever listen to any songs from this album these days. Too bad.
I know what you mean, I feel the same way with Cat Stevens and, oddly enough, Sting.
I forgot what I wanted to tell you, cause I'm drunk right now, but I thought "Why not make an ass of myself and tell somebody on the internet what to do?"
I don't know what to do of course, I'm drunk! Don't you listen?!
Gawd, this took me an HOUR to type, don't you be ungrateful.
i was about to state my favourite tull album but got caught up in this song, im sorry when it comes to great bands i enjoy the song im listening to at the time; and at that time its my favourite!
Its So pagan, this song, and the myth behind it. The standing stones *Stone Hedge* The Green Man, The lady being the Goddess, the plate of wisdom and hunger for knowladge. This is an amazing song Asking the old gray stones to show the sun its way to bed is talking of New grange with its sun that is only on the 21st of December also known as Yule and Winter Solstice. Tull Ricks and will forever be amazing.
I agree, Benefit, hands down! My favorite Tull album!!!!!!!!!! Teacher is on of the best songs too! Wonder if I can find it on CD? Anyone know? Plus, Ian Anderson is the best, and man can he play that flute! One of the very few bands I had the awesome experience of ever seeing live:=( and Jethro Tull is my favorite band of all time. This band and Bob Dylan, both absolute genuis!
"oatmeal music"...I wonder where she got that from. Now all I can think of is Bert from "Sesame Street" trying to sing Jethro Tull songs at a karaoke bar! lol!
Why is it people have to think this song has to do with Christ I mean listen to it the cup isn't the cool-aid glass that is the holy Grail it's different it's not an actual cup in the song XD no one else got that
fuck christ...if you want to hear of christ hear iron maiden,,your soul will burn in a lake of fire. ..this has nothing to do with modern xianianity, I feel sorry for people that have to try to find jesus in everything they hear. vortex go ahead and deal your shit. And may sarah palin follow . Right off the bridge. /this is just GOOD music..fuck you
I love Jethro Tull's music, especially those tunes that relate to paganism. Ian Anderson is a genius. I only wish I'd realized their brilliance when I was younger.
One of my favorites from this CD...On this entire excellent CD, Tull captured the essence of my impression of Olde English folk/country-life songs but put it to please the modern ear. Well done mates!
so little available these days...sigh..great one here describes a fairytale that only exists in his mind..but alas so resembles what we deal with today,..what may the cup of wonder represent?
I'm actually from woods..Would gladly join in Ian's "wood crew." Or is he still in senses of non-senses? Robin Hood has gone, so Ian is maybe now my "old and wise bungle." lol
I agree with the sharing idea. Seems to be an ode to nature upon whom man depended on and was tied so closely to in the ancient days. Themes of celebration -the harvest, solstice, stories, old rituals, wine, food, traditions, and of course, good music!
I am a long time listener of tull - I think that this is a sattire of the last supper linked with druidism. The cup of crimson wonder " the blood of Christ" Pass the Lady (the one who is missing in the pic of the last supper (Wife- desciple-priest- misstress- Mary Magdaline) Pass the plate to all who hunger- Hunger not only for food but for religious understanding. Once again he makes reference to the green man, May day, The cross of silver and of gold.
Not a boy thing, something for everyone who loves atmospheric, inventive music. I lost the original album in moving around as a student and thank Aqualung for posting these particular Tull tracks, they have brought back some great music memories,
i usually start the day with Jethro Tull, so now of course my 3 year old daughter requests that I play "The oatmeal music" when she wants to hear them XD
That should be done a commandement. "Thou shall NOT call thee week worthy, lest there be Tull at least twice listened!". I started via YouTube like... A few months ago when they toured in my country. I wish I was at the concert now.
I was lucky enough, and old enough (52) to see Ian in his prime. He is one of the most magnificent musicians, minstrels of this century. I am seeing him this Friday Oct. 9 in upstate Ny and it will be like dying and going to heaven.
Wow. This song brings back so many memories. I first heard this song in 1978 when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington. The other day I heard it on youtube and for the last 3-4 days it has stayed in my head. I just wonder, Did Ian Anderson write all the Music exclusively, or did he have help?
That's a good question, about Ian writing all the music. On some albums, other members get a writing credit - Martin Barre, Peter-John Vettese are the two I can think of, and David (Dee) Palmer wrote Elegy. I'm pretty sure that generally Ian wrote the essentials of the music, but the other band members contributed to the arrangements and brought their own style to things - for example, the bass here would be different if it wasn't John Glascock, who had his own style - and brilliant it is too!
I should have mentioned that David (Dee Palmer) contributed orchestral (mostly strings) arrangements to Tull songs going right back to the This Was album.
@renues I heartily agree. This band were an incredible act to see performing this album live, at this period, when they were at the height of their creativity. Yet somehow, they never quite reached the level of recognition that their contemporaries like Yes, Genesis, ELP and Floyd were getting back then. People who knew them either loved them, or were left nonplussed by them, or so it seemed.
hey is there anyone who can direct me to a live rendition of 'Cuup of Wonder'? It's the first-ever song I heard by JT many moons ago and since then can't have enough of Jethro Tull - and that's a good 30 years ago!
lucky you! could you tell us about the myths behind this song, for example? (by the way, you're irish? i'm goind to dublin this summer, i love ireland so much :D)
@Aqualung1989 I know prolly wrong, but a lot of thi song is the Myth and Magic behind Druidesum and Paganisum, and the ancent path of the mother goddess and earth religions

Pass the wit of ancient wisdom, pass the cup of crimson wonder.
Ask the green man where he comes from, ask the cup that fills with red.
Ask the old grey standing stones that show the sun its way to bed.
Question all as to their ways, and learn the secrets that they hold.
Walk the lines of nature's palm crossed with silver and with gold.
