@scotlandloose EQ2 appears to be like EQ1 in some of the lore, items and zones, but that is all. The fighting in game is way more crazy in EQ2. You have around 6 toolbars of spells with 8 spells per bar after you put in the time to get to max level. The raids are so complex they have made Easy and Hard Mode raids. SoE has been horrific at scaring away raiders with item, content, and other Nerfs, so most hard core players only last about 2 xpacks from what I have seen before rage quiting.

@SequelFinalNight Yet on the solo side, not really as much of a challenge/pain as EQ was, depending on your point of view. In some ways good that they labeled mobs Solo or Heroic, but some may argue a little too easy.

I was looking at screenshots of some of the old zones and noticed they really changed them alot with different graphics. I quit long before any big overhall was done to the graphics engine. Anyone play when they made huge changes? Just curios what it was like after changing all this. I looked at Nek forest(where I grew up!) and it looks so different! Lavastorm looks nothing like it did in the day!

To be honest WoW graphics are not a huge leap ahead of this lol.. I remember starting this in 99 and getting hooked for like 2 years. Had to stop cause it was way to addictive and have never hit a mmo for more then a few months now. Jeez this game was awsome when it was new. Travel to these knew zones was exilerating. The fear of death factor was high because of getting corpses. You never knew where it was or how dangerous it was to get it back(thus losing stuff!)

alot of people have good memories of eq because you actually depend on the community. Not like wow, where you can max you're lvl w/o communicating with anyone in the game. Where as eq, you need to find groups/raids. Why play a mmorpg when you dont need to talk to anyone?. You might as well play a regular rpg. Eq in my eyes is a true mmorpg, and it will always be missed by all.

I haved also played Vanguard a good some months back as well. I LOVED the game. It gave me the feeling of EQ but with new ideas and technology but I can't see myself playing 6 years like EQ. =/

Because EQ revolutionized MMORPGs and we have some of the best memories with it. It's really changed a lot though and they are even bringing in a new server really soon. It will be a fresh start for everyone and it will be like good ol times.

I have to be honest though and say it probably only has a couple years of life left in it, who knows though, I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts. I plan on playing Vanguard as well.

When I was level 14 on my human ranger, I remember buying two backpacks full of food and bid my lowbie friends a farewell when I left Qeynos gates and headed into the night to find Freeport, without a map, and only with a compass - that's right, a compass. The ones you had to buy for 1 gold and right-click to use. I died many times, but made it after only a few short hours.

Still miss that "bag" noise and the clink of coins. For some reason, WoW just doesn't have the same effect as EQ. Maybe it's the graphics, maybe it's because EQ was the first game of its type that I ever played.

I play WoW too, and I agree, it doesn't have the same feeling. There was just something about Norrath that I loved. Maybe it was the lore or the way the world looked. It had atmosphere and immersion. It was awesome. When I play WoW everything feels so lifeless and dull, like there's no charm.

Also, the WoW community is terrible. I haven't made ONE friend and I'm lv80. On my way to 60 in Everquest I had made a ton of friends. I hate the way mmorpgs are heading because of WoW, yet I play it. ugh!

Exactly my perspective.

The atmosphere feels totally different. The primary reason is likely the attitude & quality of the players as that's what makes an MMORPG -- Not the game itself.

Most people you group with are lazy in WoW -- They would have likely quit EverQuest before Level 10. Most people are borderline mentally retarded -- They can level so fast & so easily they do not have to think about much in WoW. Most people are looking for easy loot not friendship in WoW.

What a wonderful time that was, all the people online, always running into friends you met here or there. Good memories. Sure games like WoW with the graphics and everything totally blows this game away, but that gaming atmosphere that existed back then can never be replaced. That was the best.
