I discovered Kipnis in the 60's, studying music. Der Erlenkonig was on the menu - tried to find the DFD version, without success, and found Kipnis's version. had to buy the album. Still prefer DFD's Erlenkonig but fell in love immediately with Kipnis's voice - this song is my favorite, make the tears run down every time. His voice is SO rich. Thank you
Love the slow version. Can't help but think that music in the past was performed in a less frenetic tempo. Think Bach and the Brandenburg Concertos. or Mozart Symphonies performed so quickly now so they can't be savored.
I so regret that such singers like Kipnis, Shalyapin, Tittta Ruffo, Caruso, Battistini etc lived before the age of high quality audio recording and HiFi equipment. :-((
know what ya mean friend, but consider too again the fact that the reason they are singing like this at this particular time period is that it's episteme and zietgiest were perfect for it. technology changes culture and music, as is shown today.
i wish there was a way to go back in time and secretly record :)
@MrAudioProducer I think you are absolutely right, Kipnis was no one trick pony and so much more than a profundo - majestic, lyrical, tender whatever was required and he could take that chest sound right up to the heights - made the difficult sound natural and easy - superb
Always a delight to hear this incredible voice, when he opens out it makes my salivary glands water ! Never heard Toscanini live version - almost as if he was trying to destroy the voice with the tempo & dynamics - tribute to Kipnis' technique that he managed to hold it together - feels rather unpleasant. Thank you for sharing.
I've never read any criticism of his German pronunciation, particularly since he specialized in German lieder! But I think you are right. Yet his narrative preceding the aria in the second recording sounds fine.
A word more. It's not only auido it's videa. I saw the Lebendige Vergangenheit CD. Have a look at the Kipnis Biography on the cover. He left Jitomir in ( de mémoire) 1911, then Berlin. Then, in 33, to Austria, then US. Not a word for the 1909 Jitomir pogrom, not a word about antisemitism in Germanny then Autria. It's certainly delicate not to call him a jew, but is it true ?
good bass!

Compare with Aria: " O Gudar ! Styrken mig " from opera Aeneas i Cartago by JOSEPH MARTIN KRAUS (1756-1792).

I much prefer version 1. Toscanini's tempo in version 2 really is too slow. The melody loses all momentum.
Wonderful singing!

Such an emotional and expressive voice!

Kipnis was the supreme interpreter of this music.
Interesting that Toscanini's tempo is so slow!

A good singer from Jitomir... I suppose the second excerpt is from Salzburg Toscanini/Graf 37 production. Astonishing !
Thanks a lot
