Plus, you know the road like the back of your hand, the road is fairly clean, with no manure or oil on the surface, and there is no car or pedestrian traffic, no broken down car around the corner, no distracted mom pulling out of a driveway. And it's still frigging dangerous.

Point is, it's stupid to go all out on public roads.

@fares114 Highsider or a high side If the slipping rear tire suddenly regains traction while the bike is side-slipping, the motorcycle will straighten-up very quickly. Often the rider is thrown off before they can regain balance & control.

That particular crash was in qualifying as he was letting other people go to have a clear track. He was riding too slowly for too long, the tire got cold and as he accelerated out of the corner the tire didn't grip fast enough due to lack of heat so it started sliding, then it regained grip and highsided him.

reading some of the comments i think some people have the sound off or not watching it right to the end ? track days are cheap compared to the value of your life and theres no bus, phone box, trees, other people, cars coming the other way... you race on the road then you dont respect your own life or anyone elses, enjoy it while it lasts because one day you will end up in jail, lose a limb / limbs, kill someone or die

@ed728i You can't say 'you will' but there's an increased chance the more you push it. The trouble with riding on the track is that it's boring. Same corner over and over and there are no good pubs/cafes/views/etc to stop to have a chat with friends. It's also a totally different riding style and the transfer can actually get people in trouble. They take the track approach to the road. The lines are totally different as is what's considered 'the limit'.

@itsStruth if thats your thing pubs, cafe's, views etc... then thats nice. i was a very keen biker for 15 years and had nearly every fireblade that came out and i agree thats theres nothing like getting out with your mates on a summer night and going for a rip. i used to love track days, theres plenty of tracks in the uk and medical attention is straight there when you need it ! i dont ride no more because of a crash i had at 15mph and lost the use of my leg :/ ride ssu peace :)

@ed728i the whole lot of it is my thing - the riding as well as the stops. I love exploring too which you can't do on the track. The UK does have an advantage re tracks - lots of them and they seem more interesting. From the limited I've seen of the UK there's also a lot less traffic free places to ride - or they're real narrow with hedges(I'm in aus). Sorry to hear about your leg and at 15 bloody mph.

I myself am totally ok to drive safe at acceptable speeds (not exactly speed limit, but you know...). It's all about not trying to push yourself to the limit on public roads, however expanding those limits on a race track is what can save you and others when getting into sticky situations in everyday life.
