  • I think this would be extremely useful. Imagine immersing the hot part in volcano or one of those hot springs. There are plenty of natural hot energy sources to take advantage of.

  • Can an electric current create enough heat for this to work without hot and cold water? Perhaps it will take less energy than heating and cooling water? I have not research this material at all, so I'm just taking a guess and asking.

  • As a clarification to everyone wondering about perpetual motion:

Even if the containers with the hot and cold water were perfectly insulated (an ideal, unreachable state where no heat is gained or lost to the outside) the containers would still equalize eventually. The energy can be followed as it travels through the system: Hot water (heat) -> Wire (heat and elastic potential energy) -> Cold water (heat). People have pointed out that the temperatures would equalize, this is the reason for that.

  • at one time, the hot water will become at room temperature and the cold water too, so it lost its energy

  • Correction: It may not be free energy, but the energy surely does NOT come from the hot and cold water, otherwise it would be a case of heat converted into work with zero input energy other than heat, inferring >100% efficient engine, violating the second law of thermodynamics.

  • @motherofallemails Energy IS coming from the hot and cold water.

The difference in the temperature between the nitinol spring and the water creates what you can think of as potential energy. By the spring interacting with the temperature from the weter, it expands/contracts, releasing its potential as kinetic.

Thus, it is not just heat being converted into work, but heat + potential energy.

  • It's not free energy. The energy comes from the hot and cold water.

  • well energy is given by the hot water and is taken back away by the cold... to be unnecessarily more technical. still much more efficient than burning crap.

  • @johni1084 Untill you learn how to harness it better.. Yes, it's your stuck with icecubes and hot water.

  • @johni1084 - That's true, but note that he didn't say it WAS a perpetual motion machine, but that it is LIKE a perpetual motion machine.

  • @PixelatedFancyLads in what ways is it like a perpetual motion machine?

  • @jrfoults Theres no such thing as a perpetual motion machine. Everything takes energy. Once the water cools down or heats up and the two containers become the same temp, it won't work.

  • @XReflection that's why I said it's "like" and also if you think outside the box on a larger scale, you could have a flow of hot water coming in, therefore the cold wouldn't overcome the hot temp. And I know it's not "free" energy, that was still in context to a perpetual motion machine, which you can actually look up patents for.

  • @XReflection Obviously it´s not a perpetual engine you must manage the temperature of both water containers, anyway energy improvement engines like that could solve several problems in the future.

  • how can you make something like this and what does it do exactly love the help

  • Commercial application of reversed engineered memory metals from extraterrestrial craft.

  • dude that was gay

  • I'm glad you are happy, yet I fail to understand your gayness over such a simple comment, nothing extraordinary was revealed. However, ultimately I am thrilled to hear you found gaiety and joy over it.

  • @temper001 lol, amazing comment but straight ahead to the point
