@honeybunny617 cross strung was devised in Spain during the Renaissance. a 'response' to the Italian arpa doppia (double line). The diatonic and chromatic (white and black keys in a piano) notes are crossed, so there is no need for levers or pedals. Both hands can reach the strings either above or bellow the crossing. therefore, you can play any piece. There is a third Spanish invention: 3 lines, the semitones being in the centre line
