  • I have the same feeling with Ayn Rand Anarchists. They believe the profit motive will make the world a utopian place. I explain that capitalism is just made to be gamed, and as such, gaming will happen to an extend beyond anyone's wildest imaginations if it's ever instituted as the sole form of government. They tell me this will not happen, and when I point out that there is lots of history proving my point, they get all upset. Worse, their leader said people have to work to pay taxes! o.O

  • so i know what you mean debating is fine but i hate people that already come with a staunch position and they get offended you dont take thier side, even when your arguments have truth to them, needless to say this person had the nerve to call me closed minded. and remember i never said anything about getting rid of medicinal pot i said to her its a bad idea to allow joe the plumber to go to CVS and buy joints 10 or 15 times a day, or joey jr for that matter.

  • Dr's thoguht it was perfectly fine to perscribe coccaine to people and morphie was over the counter. once i said that to her and i said this is pretty much this legalization is same debate from the 50's when pot really became mainstream and its probably not good for the general public to get a hold of pot nor tobacco corperations should get a rather deregulated shot at it. she had no other arguments and ended up blocking me on face book lol

  • i know how you feel, recently i got into a debate with some one over legalizing pot. and i said they still largely dont understand the mechanisms in which it effects neural pathways. and actual scientific documented papers have generated a hypothesis that it may rewire the brain. all she went on about were the pain releif benefits for terminally ill cancer patients. it hen told her most people abuse the medicinal stuff. and i said in the 20's Drs though it was perfectly...

**And a lot of "faith" is what I'd call "effectively, knowingly faking it, while at the same time denying to yourself and others that you faking it"

I have brothers that love Beck, they don't seem to concerned that maybe Beck is crazy at a higher rate than the normal person, or that, maybe Beck is paranoid and scapegoating and fear mongering others for having different views.

  • 2. If you wanna have a shot at having some sort of "rational exchange" if possible.Don't reprehend god's morality, cuz at the end if god does it, it is right. Objective or Subjective. They could give a FL/Fck about morality. It's god's will. period. You always must first arrive to a coherent shared definition of what Morality is. If you don't share or have an agreable definition of morality then why even bother begin.

  • "Believe or burn" see when you finally accept this fact then it will make sense to u why such people would not be interested in truth. It's obvious that if u care for the truth u can't remain a theist much less a fundie. it's what Ive been begging atheist to stop debating xristians about morality. Objective or Subjective is Irrelevant to xristianity. There's only god's will. If he does it, says it, commands it, it's right period. Once u accept this then their answers will no longer frustrate u.

  • I hate the way some people expect belief to be exempt from criticism. It's sickening.

  • ShwaNerd, stay away from this Guy !!!

  • I'm pretty shocked that a guy like that actually chose to take a philosophy class. If he's not willing to discuss his beliefs, then I think he's chosen the wrong subject.

  • Yeah it's impossible to have a discussion about hard truth with people who are comfortable (eager?) to ignore reality if it makes them feel better. The delusional are not ones that should be giving commentaries on the nature of reality (like Glenn Beck).

  • As long as they have blinders on, they'll never see anything except what they're focussed on. You first have to convince them that knowing the truth is better than not knowing. And that the truth can be known (for all intents and purposes.)

  • lol, a fundie and a glenn beck fan. This is why I like being an atheist, and a centrist, I can disagree with 3/4 of the population : )

  • Well said James... And if the person that you was speaking to is a “christian” then contrary to him saying that "I don’t need to justify my beliefs to you"; he is actually obligated by the NT which says:

[But sanctify the lord god in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:] - 1 Peter 3:15(KJV)

    P.S.

This stuff is too easy when one has actually read that book of fairy tales. ;O)

    Katalyzt

  • The best video in a long time. Keep it up.

  • I accept that someone like that doesn't have to justify their beliefs to me. But if they want to use that as a discussion stopper they will also accept.that their initial attempt to silence you will be met with derision.

  • Because they're little bitches man. You're able to touch what ever religion you want in order to criticize them.

That guy you dealt with is an absolute waste through and through.

  • People get all defensive and shoot down reasonable debate because when you say "God of the Bible is as bad as Hitler" they hear "YOU are like Hitler". If you want to have a reasonable discussion you should make sure he understands that what you think about his God doesn't change what you might think aout him: "God of the Bible as I see him is genocidal, but that doesn't mean I think you are as well only because you call yourself a christian." (However, doesn't work on fundies.)

  • the most frustrating thing in the world is when people knowingly start being dishonest about what they think in order to shield themselves from scrutiny. I want to shake them and say "what does it say about your beliefs that you have to LIE to protect or advance them?!?!"

  • i have had conversations recently that are just like this. they don't care about truth or even exploring it. so walking away from the conversation is justified. no point.

  • How is this guy....how is what he's claiming even psychologically possible without being a psychopath or a schizophrenic. Being able to "choose" what you're convinced of? Maybe it's just me but...I can't even fathom what it would be like to try to get myself to "choose" to believe something is true because I think it might at some point make me happy. I can see how how something makes me feel might figure into my beliefs, but to consciously choose it? Just sounds fucked up beyond belief to me.

  • @ArranoGris

Yeah I was actually awestruck for a moment several times after he said increasingly absurd things. What's even worse is how he percieved that as me being "stumped" which certainly stroked his ridiculously inflated ego.

  • The best response would have been: "I'm sorry that that offends you. You are perfectly free to not talk to me. Good day."

  • The problem of Evil is only a problem if you assume that there is an all good & all powerful God is in charge of things. If there is not then perhaps Evil as a thing or 'spirit' doesn't exist. People do hurtful and sometimes horrible things for a variety of reasons. The real problem is not why there are people who do bad things but what to do about them or the things they do. How do we make things better?

  • i can totally relate. I have had numerous discussions with other people in my class about god, and the level of ignorance which the average person, even the smart person, has about philosophy are truly repulsive. This fact annoys me to no end

  • It seems that emotionality trumps reasoning with some people. They may find it difficult to distinguish between that which they want to believe and that which can be verified as believable. It's as if demonstrable evidence has no value to them regarding certain subjects.

  • I have to deal with this every day, it sucks huge :(

I wanna hang out! We live closeby!

  • He is saying he is entitled to his opinion but here is the thing he started off claiming you aren't entitled to your opinion. He challenged you and you backed up your opinion with logic. He must either justify his or consent that he was not justified in his challenge of your prospective.

  • There are two kinds of people I dislike. First, there are those who are some combination of ignorant and uninterested in alleviating that ignorance. This type of person is even worse when the person doesn't even know what they don't know and they believe their beliefs are truth. Second, there are those who just like to debate. It's often unclear if the person is a cynical sophist, an apologist seeking to obfuscate, a dishonest person who just wants to win at all costs, or a garden variety troll.

  • @MarmaladeINFP I recently saw a video of someone who was presenting himself as rational. He made the claim that debating was better than discussing, somehow implying winning a debate means being right. In my experience, people who only care about debate don't care about truth and don't care about learning something new if they discover they were wrong. This person even admitted he doesn't come to YouTube to learn and so everything he debates he apparently assumes he is absolutely right.

  • Don't dare attack their god or bullshit related. If you do, they explode with rage and show they have been offended by your blashpemous ways. So much for rational discourse. Once they show this defensive 'card', the conversation is lost. This has been my observation everytime this has happened for over 45 yrs of me trying to 'talk' with a believer of ANY god.

  • Hey, Philhellenes, if you're reading this, can you unblock me, .. I'm a big fan of yours.

  • Allow me to interpret. :)

"I don't have to justify my beliefs." = "I CAN'T justify my beliefs because I have suddenly realised you know enough to shoot me down in a heartbeat."

Hope that helps. You won and you didn't even realise it. The MOMENT the other person says words to the effect that they don't care what the truth is, on any subject, they lose. Even if they don't have the brain to realise it, you should. :)

  • Speaking as someone from England, I find it scary that Fox News wields so much power and influence in the States.

The only thing i give Fox credit for, is allowing Seth McFarlane to take the piss out of them on Family Guy. ( or maybe they're too dumb to know)

  • Many people take great offense when their religious faith is attacked. While I wouldn't make it a habit of venturing unsolicited criticism, it is warranted in the right context. If the person in question challenges you, brings up the discussion or attacks another belief (or even atheism itself) it is fully appropriate to speak your mind as long as you retain civility and and diplomacy.

Religion exists in the realm of idea; criticizing ideas is not the same as attacking a person's character.

  • It's simple. When you can't criticize someone's beliefs without them jumping down your throat, it's because they know deep down that they could be wrong, and are teetering. Their belief system is as fragile as a house of cards. Agitate it just a little, and it all comes crashing down. So they don't want anything but reinforcement. Those who are not as defensive are more confident in their beliefs, regardless of how correct those beliefs may be.

  • "You owe it to yourself..."

Its a bit of leap to claim that everyone cares about themselves. I mean, have you seen some of the shit they'll prostrate themselves for?

  • Can you clarify-

    1. did you give him all of the answers as in the above video? if so then epic

2.what sort of lecture was it where you met him? must have been a cool atheistic lecture

  • Ignorance is bliss for the majority of people. It takes effort to think, to look for truth, to evaluate facts. We know people are lazy, everyone is lazy every once in a while. But to willingly refuse to think throughout life... that takes a lot of effort!

  • If someone says to you that they don't have to justify their beliefs to you, arent his beliefs by defenition unjustified? and therefore irrational?

So anything he says that is based on said irrational beliefs is also irrational.

so saying that you dont have to justify your beliefs means that you automaticly lose the argument.

  • you've only recently figured this out? lol

I had to deal with this and found out that "a lot" of people are this way, and recently they've been trying my patience

oddly enough libertarians are this way also, I find it ironic a lot of them on youtube fight against creationism and calll them out on how they ignore the truth while at the same time they do almost the exact same thing with their ideology

Interesting side note, do you think the bible could be banned for inciting violence?

  • @alucardthealchemist

I don't think any books should be banned; though I would say the Bible certainly contains a lot of morally reprehensible shit, I would not hold the book itself as being responsible for "Christian violence". Rather, the fault lies on the people who use it to consolidate their authority (i.e. the Church) or those who are just too ignorant to critically examine it appropriately and therefore act hatefully as a result.

  • @ShwaNerd well I intend to think about it from a legal stand point honestly, I personally wouldnt ban books either but lets say this

There's a book released on gay bashing, it informs you where some live, and their work schedules, and ways you could kill them and when the best time to do so would.

would a court allow a book such as that to stay out on the market?

and in comparison to a religious book that tells you who and when to kill certain people, why should that be allowed as well?

  • @alucardthealchemist it'll only cause more problems cause then christians will secretly copy it (hey they've done that before right :) and also it'll just bolster their persecution complex.

  • @yuriythebest I'm aware lol

just thinking of more examples that the religious get special treatment under the law is all I was trying to get out of this idea :P

  • @alucardthealchemist Libertarian here. What are you talking about?

  • @waksibra not "all" libertarians for one =P

and just in examples of..well....there's a user named "lordthawkeye"

there's a coke vs pepsi vide he has for example full of many falaccies whihc I point out, he ignores or comes upm with other excuses that make little sense and even argues in the comments (and a later video) there is no example of monopolies existing without government help

they even made a word for this "natural monoplies" you can look up and read, he stands firm and says no

  • @waksibra (continued) and there are others with such same positions I "try" to have a rational conversation with

such as " A CENTRAL BANK IS CONSTITUTIONAL EVEN IF THE FED SUCKS! (which it does)" and explain how Washington approved of hamiltons idea and then later Madison jumped on board as well and appproved the second national bank

no matter what I say they won't budge

I know there are different colors of libertarians but lately stuff like this (at least as I've seen it) has gotten bad

  • quite frankly, stupid people piss me the fuck off, not ignorant people or people who are not capable but people who simply wont fucking bother to learn, the human mind is not something which should be threw in the garbage

  • I feel sorry for you having to deal with people so "dishonest" as that, but a great respect that despite being around their waist of a mind you can still try and be rational towards them, personally i would call them an idiot and just not bother with them.

  • @StandAloneForever

Yeah well the guy continued to raise his voice at me, yet I remained just as calm and collected as when the discussion began. I knew that he was so dishonest that I couldn't convince him to understand my point of view, BUT our argument drew a crowd of people, who saw a calm and rational atheist explaining his position to a boisterous and condescending theist. I may not have changed his mind, but the other people listening surely benefited from hearing what was said.

  • @ShwaNerd

I am told that I am deeply condescending, I debated a creationist face to face.

Only one time did I actually get in his face, and that was because I was watching a atheist"anidote" video, which really pissed me off since he is a fucking liar and deeply dishonest, and he saw me watching it and said "there is something wrong with you" So I got up and he tried to leave. He just said I was fucked up for getting angry over a fucking idiot liar. I aint letting that shit go.

  • @jay666KJ

So that was the only time I ever didnt remain calm, and he just came out of fucking no where, insulting me with a fucking smirk on his face. He also threatened to punch me because I interrupted him to ask him to expand on what he said so I could understand it more clearly. The guy also was a 9/11 conspiracy nutjob, and every time he repeatedly showed me he didnt care about truth. I am perfectly fine with being condescending, at least I dont threaten people, or insult them.

  • @jay666KJ

oh ya, not only was he a creationist, a 9/11 truther, but he was also a anti vaccine advocate...I told him he might as well put holocaust denial on that list since they use the same exact tactics and flawed thinking, he kept making logical fallacies and he asked me "why do you keep claiming I am using logical fallacies" He also had me read a creationist book that was FULL of bullshit lies and strawman such as "evolutionist claim abiogenesis is the way life was made"
