@whackachangchang To me yes. I prefer the 370Z its more approachable and attainable. Its got some pedigree too. Not as much as the Porsche i know, but at least its got some.
Wow, I really like the look of the Cayman S 2009 (in the US). I think it is a very nice looking car, and it sounds like it drives exactly the way I would like it to.
I'm amazed at some of the stupid comments in this thread though. It's not all about having a car for status - more for the fun of driving a responsive car, and certainly something that pleases your own eyes. What on earth is wrong with that? It's even a *relatively* affordable car (at least in the US). Lightly used, it is a deal.
I took delivery of a new Cayman S PDK a month ago, after two Boxsters, the last one the 3.4S with short shift gearbox. The difference with the two cars is epic, now sounds like a 911, which is wonderful, mid range acceleration is in a different league to the Boxster. You ow have the option of a proper paddle shift wheel which looks and is so much better than the steering wheel on this test car with those awful sliding switches

The Cayman didn't have a limited-slip differential before the facelift? Are you kidding?! You know what the first year for a limited-slip diff on the Dodge Challenger was? 1970! The first year it was made! And that wasn't a fine piece of engineering that was honed like a Swiss watch like a Porsche, so why did the rear-end have better technology than a 2007 Cayman? Don't get me wrong here, I love the Cayman and I fully intend to buy one, but... come on!
@JETZcorp Porsche realized when developing the Cayman that it was better balanced than any of the 911's thanks to its superior mid-engine layout. Unwilling to outdo their flagship 911, Porsche denied the Cayman a limited slip differential. After complaints from Porsche fans and car reviewers, Porsche finally added a limited slip differential to the Cayman's options list. The sad truth is that the Cayman is a better car than the 911, but Porsche doesn't want to deface its historic flagship.
@marshknute Pretty sad that they'd intentionally give one of their cars crippleware, that's something that really doesn't jive with the standard Porsche rhetoric about relentless pursuit of engineering excellence and all that. Nevertheless, I just can't sleep at night over how much I want a Cayman.
911 is an endangered species! for all the reasons at the end of this video. I met people who been previous 911 drivers and took the Cayman challenge and completely converted. The Cayman has the poise, and the speed to take on all rivals, and now, Porsche has fitted it with more tools to go after higher end cars. Bottom line, Porsche created a monster, all these years they were on the defense of other car brands making a 911-beater, when it was themselves would take down the coveted 911.
jamkagster - maybe, but cleaned me out a bit financially, cant take it with you though eh? but if I keep it a couple of years and see how the cash goes... if you cant stretch to a Cayman I can recommend looking at a well kept 944 S2 - i've had a couple and theres lots of smiles for a small outlay and plenty of independant garages that wont stuff you large for upkeep (just had Cayman service £800 !! ouch)
@mercoid - quite so - I've driven a Cooper S - great car lots of laughs, I watched the white knuckles of the salesman when I took one for a test drive in surrey some years ago, hell of a lot of fun!
lots of sour grapes here. I have a Cayman S - bought outright for cash (its my 4th Porsche over the years) but I bought it purely for enjoyment, taking it out for some illegal abuse early morning when the roads are quiet - my other car is a sensible a practical one - a 13 yr old VW hatch. people going on about finance, women etc? forget all that shite, just put the loud pedal to the carpet on some bendy roads and put a smile on your face and get the pulse up - aaaah

This really is the best car Porsche makes. After attending track days with the Porsche Club of America, I have seen the design flaws of the 911 first hand: they can't cope with quick hairpins, and spin too easily if you lift off the throttle in a tight bend. The Cayman is much better balanced and changes direction like a fly. I just wish it looked more exotic. Porsche doesn't know how to properly style a car. The bumpers don't look as good as the Boxster's and the interior is boring.
this was especially designed by porsche. it filled the gap between the hairdressing boxter drivers and the real men who own 911s. its for lads who are at best on 40k a year, yet to make up for their lack of real life and a normal sized cock, they go for these. they think they look pretty fucking good in them, but to be honest to me, they look like they lack something in the pants. still, it does give me a laugh seeing them with the pop up 'spoiler' haha - dickheads. got your spoiler there mate ?
@carl206rc the WHOLE reason buy cars like this is for STATUS. status is the image they seek to improve by buying cars like this. they cannot use its high tech gizzmos on a public road. sure, they all go to track days NOT. nope - the sad fact is guys buy these cars to make up for a lack of length. i bet if a truthful survey was undertaken, porsche owners would have smaller penises as a group.
@rightfredsdead I would agree if we were talking about lamborgini, jaguar or another poseur's brand, but we are talking about porsche, you can find a porsche in almost every track around the world because people who likes porsche used to be people who likes real sport cars and they actually take them to tracks.
@rightfredsdead lol wow are you're a sad story. You're obviously interested in Porsche or else you wouldn't even be here. So lets say you have the money and you bought a GT2... you would've just declared you have a small penis? Plus the fact you first think of penis size kind of tells a lot. You the type of people that always measures everything, insecure. Don't be so bitter. In the world of riches stock Porsche isn't even consider that high end.
@babymegatron the difference between me and porsche cayman owners is I HAVE the cash but dont need to show that off to all and sundry by driving a tits car about. most porsches are financed. over 78% of them. some are leased and contracted. that ends with the proportion of cash buyers at 6%
cant you see the irony of the need to finance a status symbol ?
@rightfredsdead hmm... how can i make this clear. First of all, ask any proper investor or money manager and they will tell you to keep as much money to yourself while paying a APR for monthly payment, because the bulk of money you keep will generate more in return by the end of the year than any car interest. Plus the % doesn't change while inflation is about 3% annually. Which means you're actually paying a less year after year.
@babymegatron the same dynamic works for women too. they seek out the drivers of such cars as good future child providers. however, being that most are financed, and so false. its suprisingly easy to fool a modern woman into the wrong kind of person. they are thinking they are getting a go getter, but all they are getting is a debtor.
Yes, Jamie is right. The mid-engined Cayman S is the better car compared to the rear tailed engined 911 Carrera, which is why it needs to succeed the 911 overall. It does have a chance against the Nissan GTR and the Corvette ZR1 which have beaten the GT2 in price and performance.
well said...as car consumers, we, or I myself, look for the best bang for the buck, all the luxury touches that a fine German automaker like Porsche can give you, 2 trunks, razor-sharp handling, and world class reliability. The Cayman S, modified in the right hands, or even down the road will outgun the Carrera in everyway possible. Porsche has created its own worst nightmare, or its best one yet! id like to believe its the best car for the money
I don't think the love that people express for the GTR is because of how fast it is or what it can do around the Ring only. Too get everything the GTR has too offer in other makes of cars you have too spend double just too have a chance of seeing which way it went or triple too keep up with it. What nissan achieved for the money is truly amazing and just shows up other makes of cars as way overpriced and just trading on their names instead!
Let me tell you something. Do you buy a Ferrari because it`s a wonderfull sportscar or because it`s expensive and you can show of?
.
.
.
Of course because it`s expensive. 80% of all the people who buy sportscars only buy them for the image they get along with it. The actual performance of the car is not important. It`s nice to have a strong car, but if that was the only thing people wanted they`d buy a Audi TTRS or, like you said, a GTR.
@DrakorGaet I find your statement very foolish and naive. If you take a car enthusiast and gave them the money they would certainly buy the Ferrari for it's performance and engineering. The problem is most car enthusiast aren't rich enough to afford one. The people who do, the people you see are generally not car enthusiasts and have the millions to spend on the flashiest of toys. These are people who have interest in other areas just not cars.
@DrakorGaet U buy it cuz I want the performance and the image. I use my F430 for all its worth. I drive it everyday. I also appreciate it for the work that it took to create it. The passion for what they're doing
Seriously, where can i find one car video on YouTube where there's not a commentor kissing the ass of the GT-R and putting it on a pedestal in which it does not belong? I don't care how fast that car is, it'll never be quick enough to escape the fact that it's a still a Nissan. I'd take a Porsche over that any day of the week.
@fi7thy So what if it's "still a Nissan", a car gets put on a pedestal because its good, performance wise and not because it comes from any particular brand. It's like saying that Obama will never be good enough because he's African-American.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Not the best car of the world, can even take on the NIssan GTR, yet it is a nice car but it's price is redicule expensive for a not so impressive luxury car.
I love the cayman, but i still don't want to own one just yet. I want to see what Porsche can bring out of that chassis and I'm longing to see that 3.8 engine in the cayman.. 911 has met it's match.. well maybe not yet.. depends what Porsche wants :P
Wow best car in the world that is quite a claim... but to some extent i do agree, it is a very good car but best in the world might just be taking it one step too far
you have to remember that this is basically a hard top boxter with a few tweaks styling wise and personally i prefer it to the boxter although the boxter looks good with the roof down, in reality how often would you drive with the roof down, for every day driving it is more likely you will have the roof up and personally i think the cayman looks better than a boxter with its roof up
@mero40k oh please stop being such a wanker. open your mind abe objective and look at the numbers then look at the cost, then make a decision/judgement.
Just a couple of reasons why it's not waaaay too over priced: It's Porsche and it's mid-engined. 50/50 distribution, a dual-clutch gearbox that was invented by the same guys who created the car, and driving dynamics that you will not feel on any other car for that price range. It's simply the best driver's car on the road. Arguably.
But Porsche are making such great cars now it comes down to personal preference.
I dream to own a Cayman, but i think the second i would buy one i'd want a GT3 or Turbo 911... because to some. a 911 is still the only Porsche (FYI I DON'T THINK THAT)
If it had the 3.8 Carrera S engine and the Turbo Paddle Shift, there wouldn't be any other car i would want for the rest of my life
Porsche tried to get rid of the 911 back in the 80's and it stayed.. fine. keep it, it's an amazing car with great herritage.. all i wonder if it's possible that Porsche can accept the fact that they've built a better car? I don't think this will happen for a while unless the 911 drops in price(which won't happen). I mean why pay more for a slower car?
i had one in 05 and i loved it!! had to sell it after stupid drink driving incident on my old R6!!
ive driven many fast cars, 360, 911 s and cayenne turbo!! but this was always the most grounded and fun to drive!! now with more power and slip diff, it is the car it should be, although could do with still more power!!
sad little man, just got the dates wrong as it was a few years ago!! but you are right it was 2006 not 05!! now if you want to call me a peice of shit and love to see you in person so we could resolve your deep lying anger issues and inferiority complex!! i suggest you pass your driving test, leave your mothers breast and try and get a boyfriend!! like a good little girl!!
love caymans. theyre a really nice quality good looking handy sports car that is practical for everyday use. and also the price tag isnt to crazy expensive.
Perhaps the Cayman will take off it Porsche steps-up it's product placement in film, tv. The 911 needs to advertising. It's instantly recognizable and has been around for decades. The Cayman needs a massive, continual advertising campaign in glossy magazines, tv & billboards. That's my humble opinion.
First I was like 'woah.. I don't know if it's better than a 911' then I was like 'woaahhhh... I'm not sure it's the best car Porsche makes' then I was like 'WOAAAAAHHHH... I'm pretty damn sure it's not the best car in the world' lol
i wouldnt say the best car in the world, maybe the best car for the money...at the end of the day, really, its what your wallet and check book can hold. Buck for buck, the new cayman "might" have the base 911 beat...but to say you drive a Porsche and 9-1-1 after it, seals the deal.
He may well be a talented journalist (?), but a presenter, her 'aint. I am a NS of English and I can hardly understand a word he said. Not because of any regional accent he has, just because he has INCREDIBLY poor diction and he gabbles. Why would you employ a presenter who cannot be easily understood? especially when there must be dozens of individuals who could do a better job. It makes no sense. Lovely car, though!
well obviously not if it is the "base" version. don't get me wrong, the sweeter side of the 911 range is a pretty place to be but pretty much all the 911s I do actually see on the road are just base Carreras and they're all driven by fat balding men who are just trying to look cool
i think i'd take a bmw 335i over a cayman, and a jaguar xfr or nissan gtr over the porsche. if i had to choose between the two, i'd take a 911, but only if you could afford to option it properly. if not, then take the cayman and option it up to base 911 money.
Maybe a good car in the specs. But one of the most ugly Porsche ever. Everytime I see one on the Road (I live in Stuttgart) I can only think about the ugly back of the car..
Ya...and pretty much i think your just messed up in the head or you have a completely different opinion then mine. I think the back of the cayman looks fine...better than the carrera really.
Launch controle, is that something I need? Ferraris, Beemers, Lambos, etc; they have launch controle and each one requires a whole checklist of commands. Seems like such a complicated way of getting to the service garage in a hurry.
i dont care what he says. a base cayman s will never beat a carrera. the cayman isn't as powerful and fast as the carrera. but the cayman is an awesome car, especialy for its price.
Hey, don't count the Cayman out just because it has less power. The mid-engine RWD layout makes this car sooo well balanced. In a straight line I don't think the Cayman S could take a Carrera, BUT I really think it could take the Carrera around a track.
the cayman is an awesome ride. especially cuz its mid -engine, jus like other high end sports cars. but the carrera has a wider wheel base in the back with rwd. so i think itd be better around the track. look at the stats too.
Paddle Shifters. Instead of using the shift stick you use paddle shifters with an Automatic clutch. Ferraris have a button where you can either have the car in either auto or Manumatic (this word means Manual shifting with Automatic clutch) but im not real sure if the Cayman's do, never sat in one. I know the Carrera 4S does not, it is stick. Unless there is a version that comes with it.
lol, apparently people here think you're not that hot.... all these hands down. SO stop bragging about your obese body and ugly face, thank you :) Damn bitches spamming all good car videos.....
The Porsche Cayman is probably the only Porsche coupe I'd ever buy. It's the more exclusive Porsche and it has the special feel you don't get in the 911 and it's mid engined. It also has a more different design unlike the 911 in which the designs are still the same. I like a bit of change and that goes for Porsche. My favorite is the Boxter and the Cayman. As for the Carrera GT, I'm not really a big fan of the design but it's a good looking car though.
I'll have to agree that. The Carrera GT is a great piece of engineering but by far, this isn't really tempting FOR ME AT LEAST especially if you compare it to other supercars like the SLR and the Murcielago.
And I cant agree with you on me seeing a Carrera GT because the only porsche I'll be seeing here in our place is the 911 which is also a rare sight (unless you're in Makati).
I am not really a big fan of Porsches but I'm not a hater too. I actually like the Panamera.
A car-genious here in norway has actually re-buildt a totalled Carrera GT,and i do believe it`s Lewis Hamilton`s dad who owned it/totaled it.The Carrera GT towers above all other super/hypercars by miles! The sound itself is enough 2 send chills down ur back.....Re-building a carbon-body car,i THOUGHT that was impossible, but he did it.The car is famous here in norway.
i love the way it looks but i think if had the option i'd go for the carrera esp if is the cabrio i've never been on convertible befre but i guessing that doing 80mph and the win blowing in ur face esp at night must be asome
test drove on the other day...CRAZY handling and feels like its moving so fast just for 380 hp! Black Basalt Metallic Exterior, Black Sport II Design rims, AeroKit...all factory :)

Porsche should make cayman a flagship and make 911 a retro car like Mini.
This should solve the challenge by other sport car maker and still can sale a lot of 911 to it own fan.

First of all, ask any proper investor or money manager and they will tell you to keep as much money to yourself while paying a APR for monthly payment, because the bulk of money you keep will generate more in return by the end of the year than any car interest. Plus the % doesn't change while inflation is about 3% annually. Which means you're actually paying a less year after year.
babymegatron 1 year ago
@rightfredsdead So your thinking is, if one owns a Porsche Cayman they are a show off? People can spend their money however they want.
babymegatron 1 year ago
@babymegatron yes. theres nothing wrong with that. what bugs is how its masked as 'performance' etc. its all about trying to get some hairy snatch.
rightfredsdead 1 year ago
@rightfredsdead Can you ever not relate the whole pussy and dicks to something exciting like sports cars... you just have to be negative.
babymegatron 1 year ago

Imakeplanesboom 1 year ago
well said...as car consumers, we, or I myself, look for the best bang for the buck, all the luxury touches that a fine German automaker like Porsche can give you, 2 trunks, razor-sharp handling, and world class reliability. The Cayman S, modified in the right hands, or even down the road will outgun the Carrera in everyway possible. Porsche has created its own worst nightmare, or its best one yet! id like to believe its the best car for the money
6UNLEASHED 1 year ago
I don't think the love that people express for the GTR is because of how fast it is or what it can do around the Ring only. Too get everything the GTR has too offer in other makes of cars you have too spend double just too have a chance of seeing which way it went or triple too keep up with it. What nissan achieved for the money is truly amazing and just shows up other makes of cars as way overpriced and just trading on their names instead!
matster001 1 year ago
Let me tell you something. Do you buy a Ferrari because it`s a wonderfull sportscar or because it`s expensive and you can show of?
.
.
.
Of course because it`s expensive. 80% of all the people who buy sportscars only buy them for the image they get along with it. The actual performance of the car is not important. It`s nice to have a strong car, but if that was the only thing people wanted they`d buy a Audi TTRS or, like you said, a GTR.
DrakorGaet 1 year ago
@DrakorGaet I find your statement very foolish and naive. If you take a car enthusiast and gave them the money they would certainly buy the Ferrari for it's performance and engineering. The problem is most car enthusiast aren't rich enough to afford one. The people who do, the people you see are generally not car enthusiasts and have the millions to spend on the flashiest of toys. These are people who have interest in other areas just not cars.
defears3 1 year ago
@DrakorGaet both.

@fi7thy so so so true i would never spend 160k on a Nissan, you just buy a reasonably new Porsche 997 GT3 or something

@fi7thy So what if it's "still a Nissan", a car gets put on a pedestal because its good, performance wise and not because it comes from any particular brand. It's like saying that Obama will never be good enough because he's African-American.

Cayman is waaaay too over priced.
nurbsenvi 2 years ago
Just a couple of reasons why it's not waaaay too over priced: It's Porsche and it's mid-engined. 50/50 distribution, a dual-clutch gearbox that was invented by the same guys who created the car, and driving dynamics that you will not feel on any other car for that price range. It's simply the best driver's car on the road. Arguably.
brocky 2 years ago
I don't know
maybe if you compare it to Nissan GTR?
or 370z even...
nurbsenvi 2 years ago
Ok i'll take that last comment back
the 911 isn't a slower car
But Porsche are making such great cars now it comes down to personal preference.
I dream to own a Cayman, but i think the second i would buy one i'd want a GT3 or Turbo 911... because to some. a 911 is still the only Porsche (FYI I DON'T THINK THAT)
ARRRR WHY DOES PORSCHE MAKE IT SO DIFFICULT!!!
bobdadog27 2 years ago
If it had the 3.8 Carrera S engine and the Turbo Paddle Shift, there wouldn't be any other car i would want for the rest of my life
Porsche tried to get rid of the 911 back in the 80's and it stayed.. fine. keep it, it's an amazing car with great herritage.. all i wonder if it's possible that Porsche can accept the fact that they've built a better car? I don't think this will happen for a while unless the 911 drops in price(which won't happen). I mean why pay more for a slower car?

Perhaps the Cayman will take off it Porsche steps-up it's product placement in film, tv. The 911 needs to advertising. It's instantly recognizable and has been around for decades. The Cayman needs a massive, continual advertising campaign in glossy magazines, tv & billboards. That's my humble opinion.

i wouldnt say the best car in the world, maybe the best car for the money...at the end of the day, really, its what your wallet and check book can hold. Buck for buck, the new cayman "might" have the base 911 beat...but to say you drive a Porsche and 9-1-1 after it, seals the deal.

Why would you employ a presenter who cannot be easily understood? especially when there must be dozens of individuals who could do a better job. It makes no sense. Lovely car, though!

Base 911 - doesn't have the guts to keep with the S, Turbo or GT(x) flavors of the 911
abundancemall 2 years ago
well obviously not if it is the "base" version. don't get me wrong, the sweeter side of the 911 range is a pretty place to be but pretty much all the 911s I do actually see on the road are just base Carreras and they're all driven by fat balding men who are just trying to look cool

i think i'd take a bmw 335i over a cayman, and a jaguar xfr or nissan gtr over the porsche. if i had to choose between the two, i'd take a 911, but only if you could afford to option it properly. if not, then take the cayman and option it up to base 911 money.

i dont care what he says. a base cayman s will never beat a carrera. the cayman isn't as powerful and fast as the carrera. but the cayman is an awesome car, especialy for its price.
DJJA9119 2 years ago
Hey, don't count the Cayman out just because it has less power. The mid-engine RWD layout makes this car sooo well balanced. In a straight line I don't think the Cayman S could take a Carrera, BUT I really think it could take the Carrera around a track.
redraiders07 2 years ago 2
the cayman is an awesome ride. especially cuz its mid -engine, jus like other high end sports cars. but the carrera has a wider wheel base in the back with rwd. so i think itd be better around the track. look at the stats too.

sundinandmcabe 2 years ago
Paddle Shifters. Instead of using the shift stick you use paddle shifters with an Automatic clutch. Ferraris have a button where you can either have the car in either auto or Manumatic (this word means Manual shifting with Automatic clutch) but im not real sure if the Cayman's do, never sat in one. I know the Carrera 4S does not, it is stick. Unless there is a version that comes with it.

As for the Carrera GT, I'm not really a big fan of the design but it's a good looking car though.
mondeost2202008 2 years ago
Trust me, when you actually see a Carrera GT you'll know...
porschecarreragtmay6 2 years ago 3
I'll have to agree that. The Carrera GT is a great piece of engineering but by far, this isn't really tempting FOR ME AT LEAST especially if you compare it to other supercars like the SLR and the Murcielago.
And I cant agree with you on me seeing a Carrera GT because the only porsche I'll be seeing here in our place is the 911 which is also a rare sight (unless you're in Makati).
I am not really a big fan of Porsches but I'm not a hater too. I actually like the Panamera.
