  • In 2006 I went looking for this vid on my first use of YouTube, it had just been posted, and I was a bout the 12th viewer. It's hard to believe only 143K views since then. Could the numbers be swept away in some past upgrade? Also, the visual and audio get off register the longer you watch it, like the two were on different speeds. that wasn't the case 6 years ago. too bad. I think the more recently posted version by 'davidrobertjones1847' looks better and registers better.

  • i wanna be five, but im 13

  • @ToughSerb147 i wanna be 13, but im 18

  • When I'm (sixty) five..H.B. David, belatedly.

  • how great. it trips me out when he says "I wonder why my daddy cries"

Its all so deep, but 4 year old bowie cant understand cause hes leeetle. Bliss.

  • he is so beautiful. ugly but very very beautiful. you have to be a Bowie fan to understand the beauty of this man. i love this song.

  • i love bowie more than anybody but lets be honest, he is not the greatest of actors! however, there are 2 bits of acting he has done which have been excellent...1 is the full length version of blue jean and the 2nd is extras. everything else is pretty crap!

  • @lrsfdfrfsf

Have you watched The man who fell to earth and Merry christmas Mr. Lawrence?

David Bowie is a brilliant actor.

  • @BORGNY2 And don't forget Labyrinth!

  • @TheBookWorm1718 Well we can't really classify Laby in with TMWFTE now can we XD I'm not saying I don't like Laby it's just not the best example of Davies acting.

  • Forever strange! The wonders of LSD at a young age?

  • bowie is actually god:']

  • life's expectations..so clear and innocent

  • when i'm 5, i'll marry david bowie~!

  • Sometimes , I wonder if even the ones who call him genius , realize how deep that goes . I enjoy a very wide variety of music and their are two things that amaze me about his . One , it seems like there is an endless discovery of stories and images to find . Two , I have never heard a vocalist that can alter and use his voice like hes does . He uses his voice like an instrument . Watch his live performances and really listen to the changes and inflections . It is incredible .

  • Justin Beiber took the hair style from David Bowie.

  • @4ulefties From David Bowie and the Beatles ^^

  • @4ulefties this is why people get famous - because some of the population are adoring them because they dont know what music is, and the rest make them popular by bringing them up ALL THE TIME. can we just appreciate david bowie and NOT mention that horrible little talentless boy?

  • See? He was even a genius when he was four years old.

  • the sentences "Daddy shouted loud at mummy" and "I wonder why my daddy cries" are probably linked together... maybe some bad memories from his childhood? :-(

  • @MichalFokt I never got that part, it reminds me of what Jeff Foxworthy said once of you NEVER see a man storm out of the room crying and the woman going "What? What did I say?" LOL

  • Weird looking head on Bowie in this video. What the hell was this from? A short film? Back in the 60's they didn't do videos just acid hehe.

  • @Drackkor it was a wig

  • shit

    he was so young...... :(

  • "I saw a photograph of Jesus" is one of the best lines ever written.

  • Is this really the same bloke who created 5 Years, 5 years later. Looks like him, albeit, what happened.

  • This sounds like it's ahead of it's time. Reminds me of Syd Barrett with the childlike meanderings. I Love it. I used to laugh at some of his earlier stuff but it sounds good.

  • I love this song, it's adorable. He makes an awesome four-year-old. But I must say... He looks like Luke Skywalker. e_e

  • What an enigma of a man....amazing stage presence

  • David Bowie has always had that endearing quality about him. Call it theatrics if you will but I will call it artistry and a personality that will forever be young at heart. To this day David Bowie's humor, charisma, class, and beauty is what set him apart from all other artists. He is a man with a multitude talent. Though he has chosen to bow out gracefully, his music and uncanny beauty will never be forgotten. He is a legend. My hero. I will love David Bowie forever.

  • @15275657 So sad, to think we may never see David perform again. We (his loyal fans) will always love him so much, and his amazing work will live in our hearts forever. Your comment is a great tribute to the man.

  • When I'm five, I'll be turning fourty-5 this year, but still think I'm turning five.....

  • I always have to wonder if this song is about a kid with a terminal illness because if certain things in the song.

  • @Echosofthemind I never thought of it that way, and I've known this song for 20 years now. Now that you say it...wow, maybe you have a point! Thanks

  • I do so love the way David captured the sweet innocence, curiosity, humour, wonderment, openess, honesty and longing of youth in this song.

  • This is such a rarely heard David Bowie song - strange.

  • What an eliteist! And I mean that in a good way...he's such a unique character! He's got 'charasma'!!!

  • seriously, is there anything he CAN'T do?

I mean I nearly believed him he's just 5 in that, amazing acting, great lyrics....

  • I would like to see him do this song now, at age 64, it would be brilliant

  • wow..he looks all of 15 here !

  • I also never thought I'd see this vid again.

I think I saw this on Request Video or Video One or Video Beat or Rachel Donahue's On The Flip Side.

It is indeed hard to find the actual track, too!

    Creepy, charming, brilliant!!!

  • It's so amazing how he can accurately capture the mind and spirit of a 5-year-old in his lyrics, not to mention convincingly act like one in this video. I'm not much younger than he was when he made this video, and my memories as a 5-year-old seem so distant to me. Like it's been decades since I was 5.

He's really a genius, to do things that no one would think of or have the balls to do.

  • "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."-Pablo Picasso Bowie had no difficulty with that problem. His music is wonderful art.

  • a very "sydbarretish" song !

  • HE WAS SO CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!!!!!!! XDD

  • yeah even then we knew he woud be great?

  • Very... Jagger! Fantastic perfomance.

  • This is one of my favorite songs by David Bowie.

  • Ive just uploaded my version of this song-hope ya like it ! I so love all the early stuff.

  • it was obvious at this early stage that the anthems were going to follow.janine, after all, queen bitch, star, lady grinning soul, shape of things,we are the dead, right, word on a wing, weeping wall, blackout, red money, etc etc

  • Nice song. Reminds me of the extreme horror of being 5.

  • amazing. i've never heard this and i've been following bowie for many years.

  • he could laugh in church when he was 5? man i had to wait till i was 6 to do that. lucky sob

  • Man, he's so cute in this.

  • cute :)

  • any other version like...at least 128k sound?

  • @adamlinks It sounds as bad as this on the actual record.I have the original audio cassette ("Love you til tuesday") and the sound is as tinny as here,, with that kind of weird "surround" feel to it, and the same tape fluctuation at 1:09...As far as I know, there's not a cleaner version of this...

  • so cute!

    david bowie is a genius!

    haha his funny too..

  • amazing a bowie song ive never heard.....thanks

  • im gonna play this to my grandson wiliam when hes five i love it and im sure he will love it to. we love u will

  • "when i'm five, i will catch a butterfly and eat it and i will be sick." <3

  • thanks for the post i thought id never see this video ever again the first time i saw it was in 1991 on the now long cacnelled syndicated video show NIGHTFLIGHT, this vid and the song just has a haunting in a good way melody about it. BOWIE ia a genius!

  • Aveva 16 anni in quel periodo Bowie ed era già un piccolo genio

    il sound fa molto Beatles!

  • Odd, but cute.

  • Awww he's so cute here xx I actually forgot he was like 22 in this video xxx Love David bowie xx

  • Cute and slightly disturbing - so naturally I love it.

  • genius

  • love david bowie

  • Utterly gorgeous. ^^ Bowie is such a talented actor; here, I actually believe that he is a little boy going on five years old. It's in his mannerisms. Cute.

  • does anyone know the chords?

  • i want this on mp3!!

someone knows where can i get it???

  • OMG I could just squeeze the air out of him in this video! He is too cute!!

  • Strange and funny and weird and..different.

  • I swear my husband looks like Davids Twin When My Husband Was Young....

  • I adore this vid. Most people I show this to can't believe it's Bowie. :)

  • I remember Rodney Bingenheimer playing this video when he hosted Friday Night Videos

  • hes such a cutie pie here, aww

  • If I didn't know any better I would think that he actually was 4

  • I love this lol!

  • and i laughed when bozo licked my ahh face cause it tickled

  • This is such a cute song.

  • For those of us without mothers or with shitty childhoods this is a sweet song.

  • i love this too! he is so sweet! really adorable! and i like the song too :)

  • Did he say Marry My Mum? Good song :>

  • X_X When I'm five I'll ...

  • Different Class from the Legend

  • funny, but honestly kind of creepy

  • I love him. So very cute! :D I could just hug him.

  • This is the cutest damn thing I've ever seen!!! I absolutely adore this. Thanks so much!

  • he makes for a very convincing (and adorable) five year old

  • this song is so cute! haha just like him :P

  • when I'm five I will chew and spit tobacco

  • I love this!

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • Awesome song...bowie..amazing man.

  • Hahaha that's amazing ! :D Just how old was he back then?

  • He was "twenty two". (or so everyone thought. He was just very tall for his age)

  • wen im four ill get that man that made mi step

    daddy crie

  • OMGGG................. he looks sooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!!!!!! love him <3

  • I reckon he's very good at pretending to be four.

  • @MBBonn that's because he's a master of performance art!

  • I love you David.xoxo

  • ...R.I.P who?

  • In the beginning there was nothing. God said, 'Let there be music!' And there was Bowie

  • @ziggy99 not exactly...

  • @ziggy99 I m a big fan of Bowie...but when God said that....Pink Floyd were there :)

  • Aww he's so adorable in this video! :D

  • It did not make it to The Deram Anthology. Sad, isn't it. :(

  • What year is this? It looks like 1969 but I'm not sure...

  • it reminds me of when he played the elephant man for some reason...

  • @BdALpye When did he play the elephant man? I've heard that and heard it but can't find out anything about it.

  • @TheBookWorm1718 Really? It's all over youtube. There is a huge interview with him that includes excerpts of his performance as the elephant man right here. Did you try typing "david bowie elephant man" into youtube's search bar?

  • i hope you workers know the trouble the drone went through to create me{{and i hope you all know how rare this clip is;;;:-utterly hetro}}

  • this is so adorable

  • When I'm five, I'll eat a butterfly and I won't get sick.

  • He says "When I'm five, I will eat a butterfly and I will be sick"

  • That was the weirdest Bowie vid I have ever seen. I was mezmorised and actually thought he was five while watching, he looked like a cute little boy. I bet this was just an opportunity for him to show off his acting skills.

  • Such a beautiful innocent tune, I'll play it to my toddlers when they're 5 .

  • This is absolutely priceless.

  • "When I Close One Eye, The People On That Side Can't See Me." Aweee. Watta cutie

  • I know this is said so much but...HE IS SO CUTE IN THIS VIDEO!!! Your just going "Aww!" The whole time!

  • I love his playful-ness in this video, simply hilarious! =)

  • Bowie will always be my fav singer no matter wht other artists or bands come along love him so much xx

  • Love the song. The vid makes me wanna vom though. Oh well.

  • this is so adorable xD

  • ''marry my mum''

ha, ha - that's so sweet! I had already forgotten that I once thought I'll marry my dad or grandpa one day! :D

"I will catch a butterfly and eat it, and i will be sick"

  • i thought he said "burry", no offence.

  • What a horrible thing for a five year old to think! And he didn't say that, by the way.

  • Lots of little boys think that. they dont quite understand the concept of marrige, and they love their mummies, and they can't think of anyone they'd rather marry than their mummies

  • He said marry.

  • I have just sent and dedicated this video for my friend's son who will be five tomorrow. It's perfect. Thanks for keeping it here on youtube long enough so I can send it now. Happy 5th birthday Isaiah!!!

  • what a lovely, touching song...it brought tears to my eyes!!

  • Beautiful, he looks so cute! :P

  • Leslie, where do you find this stuff?

  • BBT torrents

  • O.o

  • rofl

  • @DocOfAreaology

I found my copy of this VHS at a place called disc replay for a dollar about 5 years ago. Can you imagine how exciting? I was just so happy that somebody put it online, so thank yo u!

  • Great poignant scene, true to life and ultimately quite moving! He really excels at acting like a 5-year-old. Note how he talks about 'grandfather Jones', Bowie's real surname. Those mime classes did pay off. The 'tear' and 'butterfly' gestures are so mime! Look at Kate Bush' video 'Suspended in Gaffa', where she does the same tear gestures. Both Bowie and Bush were students of the great British mime Lindsay Kemp.

  • Where did this video come from?!

  • It comes from the 'Love You Till Tuesday' promotion film from early 1969, which was recorded at the instigation of Bowie's then manager, Kenneth Pitt, to get him more exposure. Bowie's early years as a pop artist, from 1964 to 1969, were really unsuccessful, so something eye-catching had to be done.

  • Oh this one I haven't seen, so glad to have found it. What a new perspective on David. I already adore him and this just is the cherry on top. The cute little boy faces he makes. Wonderful Bowie!

  • Sped up, this would sound sort of like Nirvana's cover of Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam. This would make a great rock cover.

  • i love this song, and in this video, he looks soooo amazing acting like a five-year-old. xD

  • interesting???

  • "I will jump in puddles and laugh in church and...marry my mum..."

He says the bit about his mum so sweetly. I remember when I was little I thought that when I grew up a bit and went to first grade I could marry my brother. When grown-ups laughed I was always confused 'cause I thought it was perfectly acceptable. I find my own childhood naivety adorable.

  • They are the same talented, beautiful fellow

  • The Gentleman looks like he always looks -- handsome and his voice sounds like it always sounds -- beautiful. Bravo for Bowie! Methinks this may be about Mister B.'s real childhood because he mentions his Grandfather Jones, and it is a known fact that David Bowie's original name was David Jones. He changed it because he didn't want to get confused with Davy Jones, the fellow from The Monkees.

  • ohh this is so adorable xD

"I will catch a butterfly and eat it, and i will be sick"

    heheheehe xD

    He's such a good actor.

  • He almost looks 5 in a weird way. :D

  • Does anyone know where I can buy/download this song?

I love it, but I just can't seem to find it anywhere!

    =[

  • I can't either, I've looked everywhere for it...good luck searching :D

  • Bit of trivia. David actually had a wig fitted for these performances in the "Love You 'til Tuesday" film. His hair was already cut short for "The Virgin Soldiers" film shoot. So Ken Pitt suggested a syrup in a style in keeping with 1968.

  • Do you know if he is wearing a wig in 'Let Me Sleep Beside You?"

  • According to Ken Pitt at a book signing many, many years ago all the songs David is performing for the film he financed (including the original Space Oddity video) he is wearing the wig. So that includes, "Let Me Sleep Beside You". Ken obviously spent good money on it as it doesn't appear too tacky or ropey.

  • hehe.. lots of people cry to this song, i oddly find myself just sitting there looking into nothing and getting touched by it, close to tears, of joy or something more foreboding lol i dont know, i guess its the feeling of uncertain... i guess. i saw a photograph of jesus and i asked him if hed make me five.... maybe its something we can all relate to.. never being innocent again.

  • "I get headaches in the morning"

    ;-;

    D'aw, I wonder, childhood illness?

  • The fact that it's his Daddy crying not his Mummy gives a hint of something really scary going on that he doesn't know about. Especially in 1968.

  • internet? AIDS mental health problems?

  • lol The internet and AIDs weren't around in 1968.

  • It's not just cute. It's deep with it's tiny little hints at the sad adult world "Daddy shouted loud at Mummy and I dropped my toast" "I wonder why my Daddy cries."

  • In some biographies it says his parents use to have huge arguments... some of these lyrics seem to allude to this. :(

  • Wow I'm glad I'm not the only one who cried at this song. lol

  • OMG- I just cant keep a straight face , it makes me just want to smile my way through the rest of my life:D:DHe is sooo idiotic in such a Fantasticly cute and expressive way:P

    Plus hes reeeli cute here:P

  • Best song in the world! Ahhh! It makes me cry..

  • what does it mean to soppie?

  • Soppy means Sentimental. So soppied must mean the people were worried about when he fell and got hurt and tried to comfort him.

  • Jump in puddles. :P

  • can't help but have a massive grin on my face, everytime i see this video.WOW,does this man have so-much talent.just think about it for a moment.this was made in '68,and everyone knows what happened in '69 don't we,he released the Space Oddity LP.what a contrast in music.but then again, when you listen to his LP's in-order from '69 onwards, are any two,the same? are they shite, they're all 'SO'-different.that's why he's so-fickin-AWESOME......

  • I hear Syd Barrett's influence in this.......

  • I feel like I found this TREASURE, watching this video! :-D Bowie is/was amazing at acting a song...which is so rare to see. What a talent!

  • AWW!!!!

  • I think he's so cute in this vid!

  • ...That was...well, *interesting*, to say the least...

I swear, he walks a thin line between genius and complete idiocy...it's the good idiocy, tho... ;)

Haha...I ate a butterfly when *I* was 5...it tasted funny...

  • He's a genius. If he can't tell us what life is, what chance have we got ?

  • he is so cute and georgous

  • I love this video. It's adoreable and to think he was starting his career and came up with this song =]
