i agree that keeping private insurance in the loop sounds like it could screw things in the long run., the smoldering wasteland of medical care today is emberassing. private isurance needs to be slowly phased out OR the quality of care must at least match the quality of the Universal one, and be forced to drop rates.

Universal healthcare is horrible. Socialized medicine would be an absolute disaster in the US. With socialized medicine, people go to the doctor for even the smallest things - why not? They're not paying. The result is very long wait times in hospitals and an extreme lowering of quality healthcare.

I think the plan's name could be changed to All-American Health Coverage. After 9/11 the US has become an extremely nationalistic and patriotic society. I think that the word "universal" has a connotation that clashes with this patriotic feeling. We know that "universal" in this context means all Americans, but the term also brings up the image of the whole world.
