Thousands of years ago the moon was actually orbitting with the face on the opposite side, and it's unmeasurably slowly moved since then 180degrees so that the crater facing side is now facing earth, it originally shielded the earth from a comet with trailing debree all those thousands of years ago, the trailing debree/astroids/rocks etc left the craters on the moon.
