I'm a cold war vet. Never had to go to real combat or do multiple tours but I found many of the same problems when I got out. Should we (vets) be doing more to educate the young so they won't join The military until there is adequate social services for vets? I don't know and I wouldn't know where to start. This is all a very sad shame to me.

I got to say this is one where I disagree with fellow veterans, someone gets out after 4 years of service they're given free medical care for first 5 years from date of seperation, this includes mental health counseling. The GI Bill is about as great as it can be, tuition completely paid for plus monthly housing allowance, there are countless other benefits available. Not to mention having military service alone will help you get jobs in the civilian world

I was in the Air Force doing non-combat work, and I can tell you that the training in and of itself is abusive enough to cause severe psychological damage. America is doing plenty for us veterans. Their are so many VA programs out their to help veterans adapt to civilian life after getting out. The biggest one perhaps being the GI bill, where you literally get paid to go to college. Free VA healthcare for the first 2 years after getting out, and im not sure but i think they increased it to 5 years recently.

If this soldiers are homeless it seems to me that they had very poor plans for their future. Some people got into the military because of the money, not because they actually knew what meant to be a true GI. But most of them joined because they, knowing about the dangers, still wanted to be part of the armed forces. Those minorities who joined because they wanted a way to make money and not spend some time going to college and building a life are the ones you see homeless now. I know a lot of GIs who went to Iraq an Afghanistan. They went,comply and came back to their lives. Decisions.

I think the people who put their lives on the line for the US, shouldn't be rewarded by being thrown out into the street. These men fighting for their country, illegal war or not, they believe they are fighting for everyones freedom.

If everyone put in $1 only, and bought some land, built apartment buildings, and housed and fed, these soldiers, retrained them to integrate back into society...(very summarized version). The US would clean up a lot of it's homeless problem.

I know a good amount of Iraq war veterans. They all tell me the same story: they enlisted in the military because they wanted the free college education or all of the benefits. They volunteered to go to Iraq because they thought it wouldn't be that bad, and when they got there they kept asking themselves why the US is even over there in the first place. Then they come back all fucked up. It's a sad story.
