  • and replace the in-cabin filter

  • Ayee i live in dallas tx lol mit go visit him so he can teach me how to fix my car

  • i have never had that problem be for and i also am from Houston 1960 area lol

  • Brownsville, Tx

    hot as hell too

  • can i spray it during winter?

  • @lexusfan100 sure, as long as it's not 40 below and it freezes.

  • @scottykilmer if you live in 40 below weather you probably wont need to worry about bacteria growing anywere

  • 0:23 NASTY

  • Hi Scott, do you have any recommendations to clean out dusty air conditioners/heater?

We travel a lot of gravel roads and it seems like dirt/dust gets into the system.

  • @tiggfigg you really have to mechanically take em apart and vacuum em out if that's the case. But you could try removing the fan motor and spraying water and cleaner in there, it will go out of the drain that way.

  • Cute Cat!

  • thanks for another good idea

  • Oh man, thank you so much!

  • WHERES ALL MY H-TOWN PEEPS!?!?!??!

  • @negnewt

    Right here! Houston represent!

  • Thnks dude

  • Great info.

  • I wonder if Glen 20 would do the same thing, it says it eliminates bacteria and salmonelli and ecoli 99.8%

  • your the best scotty.

  • dam the bad things about those vents being on the outside is that a certain someone has poured a foul smelling liquid doun them long story short i had to use a water hose some laundry detergent and 3 lysol cans to get the smell out

  • @RyanJPDManriquez I had a cat piss in my A/C vents.

  • @GmTruckCarLove yeah that and crap was in my vents, you could see what didn't fall in on top of the vents it was a bad week

  • @RyanJPDManriquez lol Okay.

  • I wish I could do that on my left leg, damn MRSA !, I hate bacterias...thx scotty I just learned something new today, love your videos, you got a suscriber now !.

  • After your method, could you also turn on the A/C re-circ and spray Lysol in the re-circ intake (usu. near passenger's feet)?

  • @ByTheRiverChebar Yes, Scotty

  • @scottykilmer i enjoy your videos they are informative and interesting

makes me feel like i can actually do something for myself

    thank you

  • I love the humor.

  • helpful & entertaining! thanks scot

  • hey Scotty, i have a chevy trailblazer that only sticks when i turn on the recirculation setting on. what should i do? thank you sir

  • @jerrywreed32 try this to clean it out, mold is in there. Scotty

  • thx man really helped

  • SCOTT IS HEAD GASKET BLOWED RAISED THE TEMPERATURE ON THE GAGE?I HAVE BOUGHT THE STEEL SEAL AND HOPE IT WORK BECAUSE THE COMPUTER TEST SHOW THAT MY CAR HAVE NOTHING WRONG BUT ACXEPT THAT I FEEL I LOOSE THE POWER AND JERK WHEN AIR CONDITIONING ON.ORTHER WISE NO.CAN YOU TELL ME AFTER I USED STEEL SEAL IT WILL HAVE STRONGER WHEN PUSH THE GAS PEDAL ?OR WILL IT NOT TO FEEL LIKE COOLANT CAME OUT FROM THE MUFFLER?THANK YOU SIR.

  • @kevinle692005 MANY things can make an engine overheat, it's best to test for problems before just adding sealer. Watch my video "How to fix an overheating car" and try that stuff first, could be much simplier than a blown head gasket, but do the head gasket test in the video to find out. scotty

  • i love you<3

  • Car's now come equipped with a cabin-air filter. The lysol will not make it to the evap core to clean the mold... Spraying on the vents while the blower is running is useless as well because you'd blow the lysol in your face.

Use something called Klima Cleaner... it works alot better and lasts alot longer.

  • @rahul1023 you spray it into the intake vents under the dash outside the car as I show. And of course, if you have a cabin air filter, remove it first, that's only logical. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Do you still remove the cabin air filter even if your spraying it to the fresh air intake? I've seen other videos where they actually spray it through where the cabin air filter is. Would both of these methods be equally effective?

  • @bigjallday1 take it out, then clean it, and put it back in. Scotty

  • my car only has one vent on the driver side to spray how do i get it on to the passenger side

  • @uricanpapi It connects inside, that's fine. Scotty

  • after my heater has been on for a while it tends to get a burning oil smell (actually its the same smell you get from a burning clutch) would bacteria cause that?

  • @supertailz candy especially peppermints will cause that

  • wow thanks a lot it worked for me.

  • Scotty, Houston is no longer hot and humid its dry and Arrid now.

  • I actually did this today, and it worked out quite well. Bought a bottle of Disinfectant spray and saturated the fvck out of the vents. It helps to have scented disinfectant; now the air my AC blows smells like citrus ;)

    Thanks Scotty :)

  • I instinctively closed my eyes when he sprayed the Lysol at the camera...

  • scotty kilmer, hey man ! thankyou for your videos you make me save a lot of MONEY!!!!!! :) thanks A+++++

  • Great video

Check the cabin filter too if your car was a newer car. You won't believe what you may find

  • would a bottle of simple green do the job as well? plus i like the smell of simple green.

  • @aftoyboy no, it's not srong enough.Scotty

  • @scottykilmer~ scotty u didnt even show them how to PREVENT mold from growing in the first place!

After u use your A/C u turn off the AC but leave the fan on and put it to full heat to dry out the system. Thats what all newer residential AC system do automatically when u turn them off.

  • @aftoyboy Plus SG is just a surface cleaner.

  • @RacerE7773 I'll just lysol it THEN simple green for the smell.

  • @aftoyboy True. I used to detail cars at a body shop and it helped get rid of the bondo and paint smells as well as in nasty smelling smoker cars.

  • @aftoyboy I wish. I love the smell of it! I use it to wash my rims!

  • Good video. My heater stinks too. Would the procedure be the same and safe for the heater?............. Also, I wonder if some of the mold is still coming from the cooling system? Not sure how to tackle that problem in snow and cold?

  • @buckeye90210 The best way to get rid of a stinky heater is to run it on high heat, full blast with the car doors OPEN and the car at normal operating temperature. The smell will eventually be burned off the heating coils. This worked for a friend when they bought a car formerly owned by a heavy smoker. You have to open the doors because most heating systems recirculate the air and if smelly air keeps going through the heating coils the particles that stink will go right back to the coils.

  • @buckeye90210 Yes, bacteria is bacteria. Scotty

  • @buckeye90210 That's when I did the car we just got in March; it was still cold and such but will do it again now that it's getting warm.

  • Scotty, I must say I enjoy watching your videos I really do learn a lot from them, Thank you! I have also found a good air condtioning cleaning product from Germany made by Einszett called "Klima-Cleaner" The can comes with a 2 foot long tube that connects to the spray nozzle, You empty the whole can into the center interior vent and let it settle for a bit. after using this I had no more funky smell from the A/C. Now the car has a fresh scent when the A/C is in use I highly recommend this!

  • I'm skeptical of spraying half a can of lysol into my vents...actually, that would be the whole can...right (driver and passenger side)? :-o

  • Excellent information! Thanks!

  • Just tried this! IT WORKS!! Thanks!

  • Great video!!! Exactly what I needed

  • Dear Scotty, PLEASE HELP!! I have question about your auto air coniditioning spray bacteria elimination teknique. My youngest son, Juan Fernando Hernandez Julias the III accidentally made urine into the air conditioning vents. We tried Lysol, but the car now smell like urine and pine tree from forest. MY friend Hector says to try using power washer straight into a/c into vents....but my slammed 81 Lincoln Continental has very expensive custom interior, I dont want it to be harmmed.

  • @platypusone Urine is REALLY hard to remove, but go to a pet store and get some car urine spray smell remover. Then spray that in there. Good Luck, Scotty

  • Scotty, does this also clean nasty odors from the heat ? Its cold outside and While driving my mom's 4.0 Grand Cherokee 98 to the store i noticed the heat smelt really really nasty. It stunk like old cheese, or a nasty case of foot fungus or something. I had to keep the windows rolled down in the cold to get the smell out it was that bad.

  • @1ownjoo2 Yep, the heater and the ac evaporator get mold in them, it can work in both. Scotty

  • Skotty Kilmer is the STEVE IRWIN of automobile management and he reminds of you of JOE PESCI.

  • @algrho Scotty reminds me More Of Nigel Farage, the anti EU Parliament Spokes person for their new Liberty Movement, Search: Nigel Farage on who's who in the EU commission

Keep on Trucken SCOTTY!! Ever thought about running for Mayor,

  • hi skotty.i have 2 questions: my car is a mitsu lancer(mirage) 1994. idle goes up and down when i turn the a/c on. i read that it might be the servo. and some people suggest bypassing the servo. what is your opinion regarding that? also i always get low oil pressure every 500-1000 km. im thinking the car is burning engine oil, but the smoke is white instead of black (or blue). what could be wrong?

  • Also how I would go about replacing my cabin air filter if it has one (?). I haven't replaced it since I bought it in 1997

  • Hey Scotty: I have a 1997 Honda Civic DX. I used half a can of Lysol Disinfectant Mold/Mildew Spray a few weeks ago. I use the exact same steps as in your video. Unfortunately the horrible smell is still in the vent when I turn the air on. I don't know if my vehicle has a cabin air filter. Do you know how I can find this information out?

  • Another tip: be sure to use the heater from time to time to keep the system as dry as possible, you don't have to put the heater on HOT, just set the temperature to 70-75 on those rainy/cold mornings/nights until you feel the cabin's air dry. You can also drive with the windows down and the heater on HOT/MAX to vaporize the bacteria in the system...do this for 5-10 minutes and the system will be odorless for a long time.

  • @ijaen Good tip, that does work. Scotty

  • holy scotty batman =)

  • Nice Tip

  • How long you leave the car on?

  • Scotty,My a/c is spitting out a black sticky something like little pieces/chunks of material. but the air doesnt stink and the 2 center vents around them on the inner part is black, what can do this and how do i fix it?

    this is a 01 chevy s10

  • talk about corniness but very helpful.

  • You rock dude! Thanks for your super helpful videos!

  • YOU ARE AMAZING !! MY STEALTH <3's you haha ; )

  • I liket the Harley better then that plastic rocket.:D

  • @Vappi94 OK, you go for show, I go for for speed. Scotty

  • I've recently go to a shop to fix my air conditioner on my mazda3. When i leave with the fixed car it had some smell like humidity for like 1-2 days and then that smell stopped. why that smell disappeared?? could it be the gas they put in the car??

  • @elchicoboy No, the cleaner they used just wore off after that time. Scotty

  • Lysol will work, but I prefer to use Febreeze Anti-Bacterial... much more neutral in smell than Lysol is.. stuff worked fantastic on a moldy carpet I ripped out and powerwashed.. so I used it on my AC system and got great results too.

Cabin filter def. needs removed before doing this though.. if your car has one.

  • Thanks....u just saved me like 200bucks!!!

  • nice! my car need this!!

  • Hi Scotty, I have been watching your videos. They are really helpful! Anyway, my friend's Mazda3 shows a P0477 error code (Exhaust Pressure Control Valve Low ). Is this a serious problem? Is there anything that can be done?

  • @poch723 to fix that code, one of the following is bad and need fixing: A wiring short to ground in that system, a bad exhaust gas pressure control valve, or a bad main computer. Not an easy thing to check out for a non mechanic, except for the possible wiring short. Scotty Kilmer

  • I'm going to do this after I replace the cabin air filter in our car.

  • @RacerE7773 It works even without the filter changed (as yet).

  • B6 Audi A4's are notorious for smelly air after the AC is turned off.

  • This guy must be Canadian, haha.

  • @TheArfdog NO, but Close. I'm originally from Niagara Falls, but on the American side. Scotty

  • For some people, the source of the Odor is their top lip.

  • Cool! Now I know what to do

  • Isn't this the job of the air cabin filter? Also, shouldn't you remove the air cabin filter if you're going to disinfect your a/c system in this way?

  • @squidboy0769 The car I was working on didn't have a cabin air filter, many don't. and the cabin air filter will not stop mold and bacteria, it's not fine enough to filter out such small particles. Bacteria will get by the filter and then grow inside damp parts of the vent system, you can't stop them. Scotty Kilmer

  • How long do you leave the car running for? Do you need to start the car to do this?

  • @roxas7300 It's better to leave the car running so you don't drain the battery. You would want the car running for 1/2 an hour to blow the stink out. Scotty Kilmer

  • Yoooh! scotty you the bomb!! hells yeah HTX

  • @yoooh69 Yo man Houston is the IAH, not HTX.

  • Thanks for this video. The AC in my Scion tC was smelling very bad. Spraying the Lysol really helped.

  • Yep same thing happened to the ones on my motorcycle. I wish the foam pieces were a bit more durable.

I look forward to your next vid

  • That is great ! I like how you show us all how to save a few bucks....Yes it can get pretty humid here in Illinois as well. Thanks for the tip !

  • @mobes329 Well, I can attest to that. I lived at the university of illinois one summer years ago in an apartment with no AC, and man, was it freaking hot. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer uic?

  • Scotty, my Jeep when I turn it on sometimes the RPMs will shoot way up, usual idle speed bounces a little above and below the 1k mark, and sometimes it shoots way up to 3k and my immediate reaction is to shut the car off. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, I love your videos.

  • @Sheogorath1518 Watch my video on Fixing a car that idles poorly, then try everything in that video. You may have a dirty idle air control valve, or may need to replace it. Scotty Kilmer

  • Great tip :)

Mine don't smell yet but it does blow out pieces of foam that is super brittle and sticky. It sucks cuz it keeps leaving black marks all over my carpeting. Well that was before my compressor leaked out all the refrigerant. No ac

  • @upsallysskirt Those foam parts are the inside connectors for joints, as cars age, that crap comes apart and blows out the vents. No biggie, just get em out with tweezers as they hit the vents.

  • @scottykilmer Thanks, I was wondering where all that foam was coming from. I had a lot of that coming out of my A/C on my 97 Honda Civic.

  • Great stuff, thx scotty !

  • my vehicle sits in a parking garage and when i start of the car, the ac is usually on but starts off really warm and smells like a dirty filter. i'll have to check again next time and see if its a clammy, musty smell. this trick will come in handy. thanks, Scotty.

  • Thanks Mr. Kilmer for yet another pearl of wisdom. My A/C smells like wet dog thanks to the previous owner. Maybe it's actually the mildew in the vents. I've changed the fuse for my a/c to blow cool air but when I put my car in drive, the fuse pops. Any suggestions on what's going on there?

  • @palmtrees89 Putting the car in drive and making that fuse blow is one of two things. First, if Ac wiring is loose and touching things, putting it in D will move the engine and cause that bad wire to short out. OR, two, there would be an electrical short in the wiring system related to the D light coming on, usually inside the transmission range sensor. Scotty Kilmer

  • i wonna punch u 4 talkin like.. im sure no 1 here is 5...

  • @lightnslim Well you seem to be about five years old mentally from your comment. I am partly deaf, so complaining about how I talk is RUDE. But, then again, you seem to be a rather crude person, so I suppose it fits your personality. Scotty

  • @lightnslim leave scotty alone. this man is trying to help people. so of course he has to talk during the video in order to desribe what the f*** he is trying to do.

  • @itubethisonyou Good comment. Scotty knows what he's talking about, unlike the ehow videos. I took them off my subscription list.

  • Scotty there was one other thing I have found to cause odors in cars and that was the molded cabin air filter. My friend's chevy impala CAF is located in a terrible place to catch water and have bacteria grow. He couldn't even turn on the AC with his date and we live north of you in a little place called Dallas. HA Thanks for the video

  • As usual, good video, keep em' comin'. You ought to make a CD of all yor tips and sell it. A little advertisement and U-tube, could make it a winner

  • Helpful as always, thank you sir!

  • i love your videos!

    doesn't bore me at all

  • I LIVE IN HOUSTON TOO!!!

Scotty you're the coolest dude on youtube, no joke.

people don't realize it, but you're saving them THOUSANDS by showing DYI steps for so many things!

    thanks!

  • hi scotty does it work same for heating system??if you dont have ac thank you

  • @MrHarjider Yes, just turn the heater on full blast with outside air blowing in. Scotty

  • scotty motha fucken kilmer does it again!!!

  • I bet the same will work on a home A/C that sits in a window.

  • @T69bonez Yes, it would work in ANY AC system. Scotty

  • What Brand and model is the Tire on the back of your motorcycle?

  • @wvin2008 It's a Michellin Pilot, pretty good tire, haven't shredded it yet. Scotty

  • LMAO at the cat's look....

  • AHHHHHH! Scotty no wonder ive heard of you! haha you live in houston too!

Were you ever on any local shows here?

  • @jrtorres1337 I did Crank It Up on CBS TV for twelve years. then they ran out of money and the bean counters took over, much to their demise. Long live the Internet where the bean counters have no power. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer Ah ha! that explains alot, i watched your shows when i was younger! You had stunning advice!

  • scotty i took ur advice i listened and noticed today as my car was runing it does a "put-put-put" sound out of the tailpipe putting my hand up to it the exhaust stopped coming out everytime the sound was occuring (every half a second to a second) so this does mean the plugs are the cause right?

  • @Matthew55904 It means the engine has a miss. Could be spark plugs, or many other things. Try the plugs first. Scotty

  • I'm going to try this on my wife's a/c tonite. It smells like mildew something awful.

  • In Fl. , works best if you can shut off the compressor, to have a ambient coil; Lysol works quicker on a warm coil rather than one running close to 32 degrees, my Hondas cooperate nicely!! trb

  • that is pretty slick. i've never even thought of that trick. i'll have to try it!

  • i would have never tried that. thanks for the tip!

  • Scotty i use liquid Frabreze and dump it in the vents like u did ....works great..

  • @ding0925 does using fabreze actually make it smell as if you used it in the home?

  • @ding0925 Just be VERY careful not to pour too much liquid in, as it can short electrical parts out a lot easier than a spray. Scotty Kilmer
