The soldiers fell fast only because they were faking so as to bait Goldfinger and his gang into Fort Knox. After he banged her Bond convinced Pussy Galore to switch the gas in the canisters so it was harmless. The original gas Goldfinger wanted to use caused death.
And the only soldier who looks like he's really falling is the one at 1:10. The others look like they're having an afternoon nap in the middle of the road or behind their tanks so that the Colonel doesn't catch them!!
You call it "funny", but as a 16 year old, I thought the scene was electrifying (the music made it even moreso). I saw GOLDFINGER the night it opened, and remember the packed house gasped when the first soldiers went down. Also another chilling moment -- when they blew down the gate for GF's trucks to get inside the fence -- the camera panned the front of the building and we saw the words UNITED STATES DEPOSITORY. Great Stuff !!!
I thought it was just fake canisters that Pussy switched to. The guards "pretend" to be unconscious until the bomb arrives at Ft Knox and not blow their cover that its not fatal nerve gas.
@iraqijew you might want to view the "Behind the Scenes with Goldfinger" tape. Gen. Russhon was the name of Army Col Russhon who helped the producers and director in making the film with the Army troops, equipment, Ft. Knox, etc. That was an inside joke and a tribute to him for his assistance. Ken Adam tells all about it.
why weren't those planes shot down when they passed over the Depository?
also, there were no guards INSIDE the Depository when Goldfinger attacked it.there are supposed to be ppl in there all the time. and how did they know the combination?
@rocksmeller99 Pre 9/11 , Pre Arab hostility, The Commies were kept in check, President Kennedy was alive and well and we thought we could do anything.........
@ColonelPhillipGreen Ask any Republican at the time and they would've said that America had fallen from its position of dominance and glory, and that the Eisenhower Administration was the "Good Old Days". I try to avoid that kind of nostalgia...
... because the US military were in on the defensive plan (thanks to James Bonds' information). The canisters were switched, they pretended to fall over at the right time - but they got back up and kicked Goldfinger's operation into touch.
first off, the title of this youtube movie was supposed to be funny, no offense or anything, sersously no offense but it WASNT FUNNY, it was a great scene one of my favorite, but still
@agwoodliffe I'd like to know how a small amount of that sleep agent, in volume, is going to fill the entire air. You would really have to dump a shitload of any kind of gas to have an effect over a large area.
@pantman136 Son, that is a misnomer as well as a trolling, idiotic and highly incorrect comment made about female pilots, some of whom today are even Commanders of the various Space Shuttle missions. I had four F-16 Pilots in my group who could do anything any of us men could do, with sometimes better agility and more precision, I trust qualified female pilots and have when our side depended on it in real life, not this eye candy cartoon movie.
@ColonelPhillipGreen When we first saw this movie as kids back in '65 we took it very seriously. Now as seasoned citizens we see the hilarity in the bad acting and sexual stereotyping. So, lighten up and laugh alittle.
@ColonelPhillipGreen Interesting comment, regardless of your true identity. My reaction is to say that the issue is not whether a female can pilot an F-16 as well as a man. The issue is why we would want our women to do that in the first place? I am a traditional male who feels that positions of combat belong to the male only. The only reason we have women in combat positions is because of Social Engineering and political pressure. Makes you wonder if it was worth it.
@Hagletrough Being good at something does not always mean you should do it, or that there is not someone better suited for the job. I do not want someone in my military that is merely good at something. I want someone who is superbly suited and trained for that position. Moreover, as I said, I do not like putting our women in harms way for the sake of proving a point - "that women can do it just as good as the man, and even better in some instances."
@spudnutsncoffee I think the person best suited for the job should be the person doing the job. If a woman happens to be superbly trained for a position more so than a man, you would still prefer a man there because you do not want to put women in harm's way? If a woman has the skills to save 2 people in combat as opposed to one, I'd much rather have a woman there. This doesn't mean the average woman will do better than the average man or vice-versa. Each person is an individual.
@Hagletrough Interesting point, but I do not think it is routed in reality. However, for the sake of this discussion, lets say that a woman can do a better job at flying an Apache than another male pilot. Sure, send the woman. But that is not my point. The woman should not be there in the first place. Not on the front lines. It goes against my value system. It's just the way I am wired. As I said, the military is no place to be proving a point.
@spudnutsncoffee To each his own. Since that's your value then I can't say anything, as your values are just as good as the next. there's no right or wrong. Good to have a civil discussion with you. It's so rare nowadays. Have a nice day.
@Luisin88 Can't do that...I swore an oath of allegence as both an Airman and Marine both to defend the US of A from Enemys of the Nation..like you You don't have my six..

Actually, they aren't asleep. They are faking it so Goldfinger will bring the nuclear device to Fort Knox. If you watched the movie closer (or read the book) Bond commented that Pussy decided to cooperate and switched the cannisters at the last moment.
@Marc010 Well, they weren't even supposed to be asleep. They were faking death. That was supposed to be a lethal gas of some sort. Goldfinger rationalizes it by stating that road accidents claim more victims than that every year.
actualy, they are asleep. yes, Bond commented that Pussy decided to cooperate and switched the cannisters at the last moment, and switch the deadly gas with only mild sleep gas.
It's Funny, but not as funny as in Tomorrow Never Dies When Pierce Brosnan describes the Stealth Boat or The Caviar Factory moment when Zurkovsky's Plant is destroyed and he says "The Insurance Company is NEVER going to believe this."
And one of the best pieces of music in the 007 series.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology and sociology:
(1) What does flying and aviation mean to females?
(2) Why do girls want to fly high and become a pilot?
(3) How can flying benefit a female’s personal life?
(4) Through flying, what have female pilots proved and demonstrated to the world? or, What kind of social value(s) have female pilots brought up?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)
