I get sick of people criticizing Patrick for not winning a championship. You don't win one by yourself. Hell Jordan didn't win until Pippen came into the fray.
Ewing didn't play with one hall of famer. And how many championships did Reggie Miller win? How about Malone? Stockton? Barkley?
Fuck you haters! Patrick Ewing was a WARRIOR and a LEGEND! If NBA players, today, had half of his heart, the league would be so much better.
In defense of Charles smith, he was a center / power forward being asked to play sf. Just a bad fit. Had they kept Xman or landed Dominque, which I think was a rumor, they might have won!
I never had to question Ewing's effort. Man left it all on the floor!! That's all you can ask. All the 90s teams gave everything! I don't even live in NY & I loved that team!!
Shaq didnt win till he got Kobe...then later on Wade. Simple fact is, great players who win rings are usually surrounded by another HOF'er, or one or two VERY good players. Ewing never had even close to that. Starks was a spot up shooter who couldnt create his own offense. Harper the same way. Oakley, Mason...role players with no offensive game. Charles Smith was a flat out p*ssy. The one year the Knicks COULD have won? Maybe 1997. Of course the stupid brawl and David Stern ruined that.
Its amazing those early 90s Knicks teams were able to compete with those great Bulls teams....considering it was Ewing trying to carry the team himself, going up against the greatest ever (Jordan) and another HOF'er (Pippen), and a very good player in Horace Grant. By the time Ewing got some very good talent around him (LJ, Allan Houston) it was too late. Btw I respect David Robinson....but lets remember he didnt win anything till he got Tim Duncan to help him.
People who bash Ewing simply dont understand the game. I like Bill Simmons alot--and I often agree w/him on NBA stuff....but he's always been way off on Ewing. Yes he wasnt quite as good as Hakeem or Shaq--but that doesnt mean he wasnt a HOF'er and one of the greatest centers ever. Its a shame he was stuck with ZERO talent surrounding him in his prime. I mean really...the best players he played with in his prime (1989-1996) were Starks and Harper. YIKES.
@LazlosPlane how many NBA Finals did Shaq and Robinson get to by them self? i'm not knocking Duncan, but he had a much better teams around him then Ewing ever did and he dint have to deal with Jordan. Olajuwon was the best center of that era, but i still pick Ewing over him. Ewing is the only player of that era that dint play with another star/all-star/HoF.
(continued) .. 2 years with no jordan .. 1994 he lost in 7 games to the 1 center in theNBA who was legitimately better than him and in 1995 he lost in game 7 of the eastern conf. finals ...
you people who read Bill Simmons B.S. book think u can summarize Ewing now and seem intelligent
waste of time to even comment on this .. you people are complete morons ... who was Ewing going to make better? john starks was an undrafted grocery bagger .. mason? oakley? name me the one Great player he ever played with before he broke down in 1997?
stupidity .. he took an AVERAGE team on his back and carried them as far as they could have went YEAR AFTER YEAR
Please stop your being a know-it-all basketball analyst, or whatever. I'd like to see you play through numerous injuries. Why don't you try being a NBA player yourself? I bet you couldn't even run up and down the court for ten minutes. Bet you can't even dunk. And yet you judge like a know-it-all asshole.
You can't judge a player on stats alone. But I'll give you more stats:
Patrick averaged at least 20 pts and 10 rebs for 10 straight seasons as a Knick.
In his first 14 seasons in the NBA he averaged over 2 blocks all but one year when he averaged 1.99. From 87-92 his blocks per game for each season: 2.99, 3.51, 3.99, 3.19, 2.99.
He obviously did more than just care about his scoring. The Knicks would have won about 4 rings? How many Hall of Famers did Ewing play with?
Look at the Championship teams in the years he played, only one team won a championship with only one hall of famer- that was Hakeem and the Rockets. I think everyone agrees that Hakeem is better than Patrict but don't diminish his career with your two lines of stats.
I don't diminish his career with two lines of stats. I point out that his "greatness" is a myth. It is a product of the media and so often (I'm sick of it) people defend Ewing by saying, "Look at the numbers... look at the numbers..." Well I looked at the numbers and came up with what I believed all along WITHOUT knowing the numbers.... he's Walt Bellamy. Please stop this silliness.
Ewing needed a coach to not back down from him. Like Thompson. (teammate of Bill Russell, by the way)
First you say you can't judge a player on stats alone, then you proceed to give me stats. Which is it?
I agree, by the way, that you do not judge by the stats ALONE. But stats are part of it, particularly if you have seen virtually every game the guy played in, which I did. I also saw Bellamy quite often too, and Reed, virtually every game.
20 points and 10 rebounds is nice. But I posit you this: If the stats read 15 points and 18 rebounds/game they win 4 rings. Period.
By the way, speaking of stats look at Bill Russell's:
15.1 points, 22.5 rebounds/game -
And how many rings??? Please don't tell me "Oh, he played with Hall of Famers" Yes, he did. But to a man they all said Russell made them better. Period.
Ewing made everyone else worse, standing around watching him take nine seconds to make his move. . .
If had cared about rebounding instead of scoring they would have never even made it to the playoffs. For much of his career they played a big lineup with other players who could rebound the ball. Remember they had Smith, Mason and Oakley. They were catching rebounds too. As for Bill Russell he played in a time when the game was VERY high paced and perimeter players were inefficient. Look at Cousy he shot under 40% for his career and that was normal percentage. Lesser percentage=more rebounds.
@LazlosPlane Yes the reason Ewing never won a championship is because he dint rebound enough, your a moron, don't compare Ewing and Russell, Russell played with 8 HoF, Ewing dint even play with a perennial all-star, tell me this genius; while Ewing is focus on his rebounding, who would do the scoring for the Knicks?
@LazlosPlane WOW... were you drop on your head as a child? does stupidity run in your family? i guess Marino isn't a great qb? and Ted Williams is a horrid baseball player huh? Ewing is a great player, regardless. just like Marino and Williams. championships are a team Achievement. Ewing was never given a great team to work with. you moron..
Brings a tear to my eye every time I see it. Patrick Ewing was and still is my favorite player of all time.Glad he got what he deserved: A spot in the Hall of Fame.
Dam bro, you should've gotten some better seats. LOL! Just playing man. Thanks for uploading this

Shame cause He really deserved a ring with the knicks

Please. The guy's the most over-rated player in history.
I'm a long suffering Knicks fan. (1960's).
When he was drafted I was thrilled. I thought we were getting another Bill Russell. Instead we we got Walt Bellamy:
Check the stats per 36 minutes:
Walt Bellamy
20.1 points, 13.7 rebounds/game
Patrick Ewing
21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds/game
If he had only cared about rebounding instead of scoring, we'd have won about 4 rings.
Fuckin' waste.
