  • Curtis was such a great, slick guitar player..can't figure this song out on the guitar to save my soul!!!

  • Just miss this stuff so much and those years too....The movie was the best,,,,Nice to be young......

  • Oh, can't forget Jimmy Nolen either.

  • Another good Hendrix book is Room Full of Mirrors, actually that one is probably better than Ultimate Hendrix in terms of pre-experience stuff.

  • hendrix. band of gypsys. heavy.

  • This guy pretty much invented the genre of funk in terms of the guitar.

  • Actually debatably Hendrix was The pioneer who that sparked the sound.

  • Not debatable at all. Maybe someone came before Mayfield, but it wasn't Hendrix. Hendrix actually got it from Mayfield, he was doing this with the impressions long before Hendrix adopted it as a style. You should read the book Ultimate Hendrix... it talks about all the guys Hendrix toured with on the Chitlin curcuit before he became famous, and he toured with Curtis Mayfield on a few occasions. He cites him as an influence.

  • For my buddy Greg in UK working on WSJ.

  • Thanks Sistalinda! Made my day!!!!

  • superawesome, i love his voice

  • supercool!

  • this brotha wuz waaaaay b-4 his time.

    R.I.P. Curtis-gone 2 soon.

  • Takes me back...

  • Supercool..

  • funkalicious great song but i prefer pusherman

  • Nobody told the story of the day better than Curtis.Beautiful!

  • miss this era !!!

  • Oh Hell Yeah! This is the shizzle, no doubt

  • Genius...The man is a genius--cliche, but often impersonated never duplicated

  • This is FUNK all the way~~

  • funk soul

  • i'd say r&b. nice old school r&b : D

  • before we went out, my girlfriend always let hear curtis with nice loud speakers

  • I bow down before the king.

  • RESPECT great man

  • nice

  • Today's millionaire talentless songwriter singers that are more famous for their clothes and houses than their music blather , couldn't hold this man's shorts. I took all of this music for granted back in the mid 70's when it was fresh. I listen to it now 35 years and realize the amazing rhythm and style involved in the guitar work, base and percussion in order to produce such a great sound that is still fresh today.

  • You are absolutely damn right

  • those whom (God) wishes to destroy he drives mad

  • under which genre does this belong?

  • funk probably.

    r&b otherwise?

  • @Roxxisalive

Under the genre of KICKASS Music!

  • what a beautiful voice

  • Mfalmekali ......Elvis was'nt even close to comparable. His name should'nt even be brought up next to Curtises. Elvis sucked.

  • @Fishman707 hell yeah

    you're so right

  • Roger that bro

  • word

  • powerhouse deluxe. so much love and greatness in this man's music and sound.

whatever. I just like it a lot. I don't have to make sweeping statements. I'll leave that to the others. rip, cm. much love

  • FANTASTISCH

  • "The aim of his flow was to move a lot of blow" Ur the best CM, even Elvis can't touch ya

  • Correct, so far ahead was his music...!

  • 10 years gone today.

  • Darn...nnnnnn...!

  • And they still tryin curtis

  • CM's rhythm is unbelievable. He's really sick on guitar, I understand why he is one of Jimi Hendrix' influence

  • hard to understand what a hell of a man...

  • Curtis gets in your soul. He and Gil Scott Heron were messengers back in the day! There was always a message in their music and those guys delivered! Right on Curtis! Right on! I know you're looking down on us brother! Right on!

  • Right on Brother! Right on!!

  • Superfly

  • where can I find P.S. I Love You by Curtis Mayfield? - if anyone knows could you please reply to this comment; thanks x]

  • The last Curtis Mayfield Band (1990's) reunited in order to play tribute concerts. Look for them at a venue near you in 2010. They have a nice, young singer who recreates CM's role with dignity and respect.

  • just awesome!!!

  • I like it!

  • American Soul and Cuban guajira put together

    In a magesterial way.Wow! what a combo

  • we love this song michelle west/bone lee tadpole band

  • First there was SUPER FLY then came many other vernacular through the decades 80's, 90's & 2000's. Today 2009 that word is called SWAG or SWAGGER. Say hello to your Great Grandfather SUPER FLY because we invented the wheel young bloods...Can You Digg It?

  • Hell yes

  • This is an ultimate entertainment score! It seems to me that the"Superfly" soundtrack and the movie are a perfect marriage since Curtis Mayfield expresses the essence of what this movie depicts:A major dope hustler at a point of his life when he decides that hustling is the wrong path and wants to move on to better and bigger things. Those who didn't see the movie thinking it was just another thug flick are mistaken! This movie is based on the triumph of the human spirit.Curtis puts it out great!

  • SUPERFLY!!! Black soul is the best....

  • Great. Just discovered this guy. :)

  • Funkiest shit I have ever seen!

  • Curtis was a great songwriter performer and a sweet huy.

One of the best gigs I went to in the 80s was a small place where we stood by the stage watching Curtis playing for hours, all his own songs. rip

  • Allen you are the dumbest motherfucker on the face of this earth, brits dont know what the hell there doing, there the most ugliest untallented people on the face of this earth, get a life faggot!

  • Don't drag every Brit into this. You may or may not be right, I never read whatever made you angry, but a whole people shouldn't be categorized like that. Think, man!

  • ALLEN, YOU'RE SO RIGHT!! PEACE

  • End OF Story!!!

  • oh man this is bad. Curtis Mayfield is the man. TRYIN to GET ON!!!!!!!

  • RIP Curtis, you were Awesome xxx

  • CANCION DE SU ALBUM SUPERFLY DE 1972.

  • inlightend people trying to reach the mases with pop music. dig

  • HOt!!! IF searched all over you be hard pressed to find musians to recreat this song. Cuz the music schools today teach

theory and technique and just total bull sh*t, People come out and can't even make anything even close to good let alone great...We're doomed here in america. Well at least the brits are trying to keep soul music alive.

  • Shame he had to have that stage accident so many years ago. Sorry he's dead, but at least he's in pain no longer.

  • Greatness...this is a great live performance, Man there were a lot of great backing musicians back then, that band is amazing and Curtis just wrote great music to play and learn from. Thanks for posting this!!!

  • The reason they had so many backing musicians back then is because they played real music, not that synthesizer stuff, so they had to have a boatload of musicians.

  • Found out about Mayfield in a skateboard video. PlanB. I was a kid and I loved it right away. Coooool stuff.

  • Wow...Superfly!

  • yeah!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic! This song brings back some great memories. Thanks for posting it.

  • hello curtis, from colombia,i just wan a tell you that your song is just great....smoth,slowly,delicate bass,armonic.....superfly and pusherman were icons in the 70 "s

  • love it

  • DA MAN !!!!

  • Just the best!

  • He is fantastic beyond belief!!!! Then and now, DAMN!!!

  • this is one of the best bass lines ever written. . . right up there with huston's don't leave me this way and gaye's give it up.

awesome bass - nothing too flashy just melody, baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • super fly song!

    Lenny Kravitz also took influence

  • this get my mojo working

  • this guy is the most influential pioneer in RnB

  • it's the guy jimi had his style from

  • Damn he's a hell of a musician!!!

    just TOO FLY

  • thanks for super rare video!

  • wow this is a great song that still stand the test of time. this is real music with a message.

  • this is a silly thread.!?#@! it's not even a question if he was one of the greatest, that's already in the dictionary... Check Webster's idiots ;)

One of The Greatest that did it; = equal but not limited to, one; Curtis Mayfield: Music Legend...

  • Everyone can have their opinion, and I respect that. For my money though, Curtis Mayfield was one of the best.

  • whats wrong with black music today is that

there are no more bands, just computer generated crap,

hell even mexican music is still played live

  • The garage band of the 1960s and 1970s, driven largely by a black influence, were comprised of individuals that were heavily involved in their music, not their software. That's what's wrong with ALL music- the industry is churning out the same trite shit over and over again, all loosely related in sound or meaning, indistinguishable from any other song. Hendrix, for example, was one who constantly fiddled with equipment for a new sound, now he would just change the envelope filter on Sony Acid

  • when Hendrix wrote purple haze he said then mayfield influenced him.

  • People love talking about this era of music and how it was probably the greatest. According to Robert Palmer who did a series for BBC called "Dancing in the Streets" with an accompianing book of the same name, Rock and Roll started in the black church. That is probably why many have a disdain for todays style of music, because it is studio driven. Even those guys down in Muscle Shoals Alabama were influenced by the anointed church sound. Case in point, why did Beyonce' sing rather than Yolanda?

  • Who is the heck is Beyonce & Yolanda? Probably?lol. It was the greatest decade and never will be matched again. Curtis was a big contributor of the musical genius of that era. Don't mention unworthy names such as Beyonce on here. Take that garbage somewhere else.

  • Wrong, one of many quotes (this one from wiki) . . . "In 1966, Hendrix, who played and recorded with Little Richard's band from 1964 to 1965, was quoted as saying, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice." Check out Hendrix with the "Chitlin' Circuit" etc . . might want to inform yourself, because everyone is influenced at some point.

  • why don't all of you idiots who criticize this song get a life. Obviously, you are all a bunch of garbage that can't let someone listen to a great old song without having to read your pathetic shit!!!!

  • one of my heroes!

  • peace

  • i listen to this why im driving around in my geo and imagining its a old school bel-air with a chop top and im wearin a big fuzzy hat and carring a cane instead of my flannel shirts and glasses :)

  • Don't screw me,but screw the notion that music has colors. Screw ignorance, poverty and violence. Screw it right out of existence. If my comment offended you so much, look at the world...and look at yourselfin the mirror then ask why. Don't screw me for speaking the truth. The truth is often ugly, but it is the truth that will set you free

  • who the fuck said it was?

  • same here but instead of being black being barritone

  • You do realize there are black Jews right?

  • this is hot.. Curtis is the man

  • One of the true heavyweights! Try counting the time 4-1-3 to really catch this groove (the bass plays 2 over the 3) note: this still works as straight 4/4 hence the nice multi-rhythmic feel

  • Voice like silk.

  • Yeah boy
