Not debatable at all. Maybe someone came before Mayfield, but it wasn't Hendrix. Hendrix actually got it from Mayfield, he was doing this with the impressions long before Hendrix adopted it as a style. You should read the book Ultimate Hendrix... it talks about all the guys Hendrix toured with on the Chitlin curcuit before he became famous, and he toured with Curtis Mayfield on a few occasions. He cites him as an influence.
DAMN! This shit taking me back, god have mercy, all the fly ladies up on 125th st. and grant projects, manhattanville projects, along broadway, along amsterdam ave, up at riverside drive, grants tomb, riverside church I use to hang out yes in the church we party (with the lord permission), stone gym, anyone who read this and is from 125th st & bway, in harlem new york city, u know u feel it, back when i grew up in 1970s wl b 50 in april! I made it out, but won't forget who is still there.
Today's millionaire talentless songwriter singers that are more famous for their clothes and houses than their music blather , couldn't hold this man's shorts. I took all of this music for granted back in the mid 70's when it was fresh. I listen to it now 35 years and realize the amazing rhythm and style involved in the guitar work, base and percussion in order to produce such a great sound that is still fresh today.
Curtis gets in your soul. He and Gil Scott Heron were messengers back in the day! There was always a message in their music and those guys delivered! Right on Curtis! Right on! I know you're looking down on us brother! Right on!
The last Curtis Mayfield Band (1990's) reunited in order to play tribute concerts. Look for them at a venue near you in 2010. They have a nice, young singer who recreates CM's role with dignity and respect.
First there was SUPER FLY then came many other vernacular through the decades 80's, 90's & 2000's. Today 2009 that word is called SWAG or SWAGGER. Say hello to your Great Grandfather SUPER FLY because we invented the wheel young bloods...Can You Digg It?
This is an ultimate entertainment score! It seems to me that the"Superfly" soundtrack and the movie are a perfect marriage since Curtis Mayfield expresses the essence of what this movie depicts:A major dope hustler at a point of his life when he decides that hustling is the wrong path and wants to move on to better and bigger things. Those who didn't see the movie thinking it was just another thug flick are mistaken! This movie is based on the triumph of the human spirit.Curtis puts it out great!
Allen you are the dumbest motherfucker on the face of this earth, brits dont know what the hell there doing, there the most ugliest untallented people on the face of this earth, get a life faggot!
Don't drag every Brit into this. You may or may not be right, I never read whatever made you angry, but a whole people shouldn't be categorized like that. Think, man!
HOt!!! IF searched all over you be hard pressed to find musians to recreat this song. Cuz the music schools today teach
theory and technique and just total bull sh*t, People come out and can't even make anything even close to good let alone great...We're doomed here in america. Well at least the brits are trying to keep soul music alive.
Greatness...this is a great live performance, Man there were a lot of great backing musicians back then, that band is amazing and Curtis just wrote great music to play and learn from. Thanks for posting this!!!
The reason they had so many backing musicians back then is because they played real music, not that synthesizer stuff, so they had to have a boatload of musicians.
hello curtis, from colombia,i just wan a tell you that your song is just great....smoth,slowly,delicate bass,armonic.....superfly and pusherman were icons in the 70 "s
The garage band of the 1960s and 1970s, driven largely by a black influence, were comprised of individuals that were heavily involved in their music, not their software. That's what's wrong with ALL music- the industry is churning out the same trite shit over and over again, all loosely related in sound or meaning, indistinguishable from any other song. Hendrix, for example, was one who constantly fiddled with equipment for a new sound, now he would just change the envelope filter on Sony Acid
People love talking about this era of music and how it was probably the greatest. According to Robert Palmer who did a series for BBC called "Dancing in the Streets" with an accompianing book of the same name, Rock and Roll started in the black church. That is probably why many have a disdain for todays style of music, because it is studio driven. Even those guys down in Muscle Shoals Alabama were influenced by the anointed church sound. Case in point, why did Beyonce' sing rather than Yolanda?
Who is the heck is Beyonce & Yolanda? Probably?lol. It was the greatest decade and never will be matched again. Curtis was a big contributor of the musical genius of that era. Don't mention unworthy names such as Beyonce on here. Take that garbage somewhere else.
Wrong, one of many quotes (this one from wiki) . . . "In 1966, Hendrix, who played and recorded with Little Richard's band from 1964 to 1965, was quoted as saying, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice." Check out Hendrix with the "Chitlin' Circuit" etc . . might want to inform yourself, because everyone is influenced at some point.
why don't all of you idiots who criticize this song get a life. Obviously, you are all a bunch of garbage that can't let someone listen to a great old song without having to read your pathetic shit!!!!
i listen to this why im driving around in my geo and imagining its a old school bel-air with a chop top and im wearin a big fuzzy hat and carring a cane instead of my flannel shirts and glasses :)
What ghetto song it was then. Walking throught a bad neighborhood back then, and where the notorious Blackpanther gang used to hangout. What days they were.
The movie was great for that time era and for curtis mayfield, rest in peace!! He is surely missed because he sang from the sole of his vison and true life as it is!!!
While listing to his music, there is an interruption of a circular thing that goes around in the middle of the screen. Anyone knows what may be the problem?
