Not debatable at all. Maybe someone came before Mayfield, but it wasn't Hendrix. Hendrix actually got it from Mayfield, he was doing this with the impressions long before Hendrix adopted it as a style. You should read the book Ultimate Hendrix... it talks about all the guys Hendrix toured with on the Chitlin curcuit before he became famous, and he toured with Curtis Mayfield on a few occasions. He cites him as an influence.

I took all of this music for granted back in the mid 70's when it was fresh.
