It does not diminish Amy's or Janis's wonderful talents. They were both wonderfully strong women, excellent artists, and beautiful people....I am sorry they chose the drugs they did. While I can, and do admire Amy's talent and work, she died of a recreational drug over-dose. I just can't feel sorry (or bad) about that.

I am also an addictive personality. When I allowed my addiction to control me, I accepted responsibility for it myself. I wasn't sick or have an illness, it wasn't a disease, I was drunk. My diabetes IS a disease, so I know the difference. Until we take a hard line on substance abuse, many more of our best and brightest will die needlessly.

As for Amy Winehouse, it is sad that the demons got hold of her and that she wasn't able to shake them. It raises an ethical question, is it right to force people into rehab? Maybe it is, at some point, but I just wish those who need rehab simply make the right decision themselves.
