Mainstream media obscured the good stuff to a large degree and just served up some more marketable crap in its place. Not say good music was not there, obviously it was (is) but the overall exposure you got from radio and tv was the same garbage it is now.

I read so many comments on youtube by teens who say stuff like "wow, music was so much cooler back then" - but this is rose-coloured glasses type talk and overlooks the fact that the majority of the music played on radio and video channels back then was cheesy/commericalised pop crap, just like it is now. PJ & Co were more a lucky exception than the rule.
