Is he just not among the BEST guitarists EVER, or what? If I'm not mistaken, Amos didn't even learn to play the guitar till he was "very" old. I also LOVE his vocals.
To me it seems like he may be demonstrating a technique, or method moreso than trying to woo anyone to bed. My guess is, if Amos played this song acoustic under a tree in the middle of a West Virginia rolling hill, it would sound way more soulful than what we hear here. Perhaps all these other 'pros' should grab another vid of Amos and eat their words. Maybe Midnight at the Oasis? Just sayin'. But what do I know.
What is is about the few YT posters who hear one vid of an artist and start puking up harsh, ignorant criticism. One: this is an instructional video not a performance. Two: Amos Garrett is a well respected professional with a distinguished resume. Three: shut up and learn his technique, whoever you are and at whatever level, you will benefit from the influence.
Trust me, Amos is an amazing player and an awesome human being. Those who know, know... Those who don't will continue to live without understanding the playing on this video. K sera.
Peace and love Amos. Thanks for all the beautiful music my man.
There are SOME nice big bends in there. But, then again, some of the bends are sloppy and off-pitch. Gets too crazy with the melody, which is a shame with this particular song. Also the tempo is much too fast.
Bill Kirchen does a great Sleepwalk- he also does a whistling solo for variety. I imagine he could do one on trombone as well- he's all about variety- as long as you like Dieselbilly.
BRILLIANT Response 1954tele! Hilarious - the whole argument is SOO funny. Assholes everywhere ya turn! As for PROzacneilzero6 think the gauntlet's been thrown down mate!
Beautiful clip! A friend has met Amos and said what a thoroughly nice guy he is! In case that matters to anyone not too busy reading chippy snitty cheapshots! Ha ha ha ha....:o)
It never ceases to amuse me that there is always a PRONeil06 around to criticise talent. Self appointed armchair critics like PRONeil06 always follow the motto "Those who can, play.....those who can';t criticise". Amos Garrett has been playing professionally for over 50 years. So PRONeil06, in the hope that in the coming new year you may grow a set, spend $15 on a webcam and stop hiding behind the relatifve security of your keyboard and teach all of us how to play guitar! Happy New Year!
id love to, but seeing as I dont have a web cam that might be difficult, but I am confident in my ability and I dont need to prove anything to anyone to have an opinion on this horrible attempt at a great song
Fine, fine guitarist as he is, the Danny Gatton version of Sleepwalk I've heard is overplayed, sloppy and way too bluesy. I'm not saying this is a great version (see Brian Setzer for that) but DG was probably the wrong person to be comparing him to. (Prepares to be flames by Gatton hagiographers)
Thanks for posting this. Great to see how he does the bends, and his very unusual right hand, and the acoustic rhythm guitar all at once. It sure works for me. Such skilful control and dreamy tones. Onya, Amos!
Good to see, I hesitate to call him a country player because I don't know his repertoire, but the multiple-string bending is something that's largely gone out of the current guitar scene in modern rock. You CAN learn a lot from this.
Amos Garret is Great! And does one Awesome interpretation of Sleepwalk, Not to mention "Midnight at the Oasis" Maria Maulder, He really Plays Fantastic on that song too. He's a Living Legend.

This video was difficult to watch and even more difficult to listen to. I'm sorry, I don't know who Amos Garrett is but i think that is probably a good thing.
Amos has recorded with Maria Muldaur, Anne Murray, Paul Butterfield, Stevie Wonder, Emmylou Harris, Jesse Winchester, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Henry Kaiser, Rodney Crowell, Elvin Bishop, Todd Rundgren, Bonnie Raitt and many others. He's also released many critically acclaimed albums of his own - most recently a tribute to Curtis Mayfield. He's an historically significant guitarist and a great guy - try his live recording of Sleepwalk in Japan (here on youtube) - that may work for you.
As for my musical horizons, I think they are pretty broad and ever-expanding. I have a bachelor's degree in music, I've studied classical, bluegrass, jazz and rock guitar, and I play in 5 different bands at the moment.I have my own cover of this song on my page. Also, this is neither Jazz nor is it a Jazz standard by any means. My criticism was not of the song but of this specific performance by this specific performer. I usually don't leave negative comments on videos either.
@kephaisrock lol, checked out your page...c'mon, you really have no justification to comment negatively about Amos Garrett's playing, since he's a long time respected professional, and you're mediocre at best. Sometimes keeping half baked opinions to yourself is wise discretion.
@raremountainbear I guess I should return my degree in music to the university that gave it to me then. Looks like I wasted 20 years of my life studying music and guitar. Thank you for informing me.
Actually, if you don't like it, google Danny Gatton, Brian Setzer, Arlen Roth, Scotty Anderson et al and experience, what is in my opinion somewhat better musicianship than what this clip offers.
Wahoo! Great to see this bendmeister does his thang. Wonder what gauge strings he uses. They don't look like lights from what I can tell form this vid, but I could be wrong.
Amos uses a hybrid set - he starts with a standard 10 - 46 set and then replaces the B and G with the gauge from a 9 - 42. He does his big bends on the B and G.
Some more Amos Garret on Spider Robinson's web site - listen for the solo work in e.g. Oblivion and The Drunkard's Song (go on "enter the site", then "free music")
This is from his instructional DVD "Stringbending: a masterclass" available from the website shown - he takes you through his repertoire of multistring bends. You'll get sore fingers, but it's great.
I love this mans style his bends are so wide it sounds like he's using a slide. His solo on midnight at the oasis is beautiful but I can't find it on youtube
Amos is a hero....his solo in "Please send me someone to love" on the Butterfield "Better Days" album, is the best guitar solo....ever! This video is a gem....thanks for posting RC

Depends on the string gauge. You can do it better with really small strings. like .007 through .36 but i dont think those are made any more
