  • Most consumers don't really care about which OS they use. They just want something that works and allows them to do the things they want to do.

No matter how free, powerful or cool Linux is, it will never be taken up en masse by the mainstream consumer until it does all of the following:

    - provides a user experience as simple as Windows or OSX;

    - mainstream application and game developers create Linux versions of their programs; and

    - hardware vendors provide full driver support for it.

  • @neuralecho I agree with you but most people who use a computer dont really know how to use it.

  • @neuralecho

Linux is inconsistent and it has way more issues than just drivers or UI.

Just try to change file & folder attributes from the GUI, it doesn't work and the problem is known since like 2008.You'll have to use the console.

  • people always say "Oh yeah try out linux! its really great and beats windows all day!" but linux is not windows, those coming to linux shouldn't expect to have a better windows and its pointless to even argue if linux works better then windows. if you want to do everything you did in windows but in linux then linux isn't going to work out for you linux is it's own thing and people need to realize that instead of getting really ZOMG UBUNTU on everyone. take it easy -Craig

  • @SgtCraigHart1

"Linux is different, Linux is not windows... "

To b honest, Linux can't compete, fails in virtually every aspect & that's y no1 cares about the same old empty phrases anymore.

Operating systems have been invented to make computing more comfortable, that's what the entire exercise was all about.

  • ya your a hacker all you cared about was registering

  • Ubuntu DOES crash, when I tried it - it crashed more than my xp which hardly ever crashes

  • @poojkhgf Well then you did something wrong. I have never got my Ubuntu, Mint or Arch to crash. And I must note that Arch must be built from bits and pieces unlike the autoinstalling Ubuntu. So yeah...

  • retard computer voice.

  • Mac is linux for retarded people..

  • Linux is Mac for poor people.

  • @Dilster3k

Nah, there is thousands of different distro's and literally hundreds of different versions of the major ones. Most software companies put out an open source of their projects in their early stages for testing, that's where most Linux users come into play.

  • lol they have to disguise their voice because they realize some of the BS they are coming out with.

linux is considered to have no viruses AKa it has viruses but we pretend it doesnt

  • speaks like an indian

  • Well unity look like **** , ubuntu can't play game well without days of hunting the best config for your system and even at that point it look like ****, crappy graphic driver since graphic driver are not opensource , not user friendly , most free program on it are **** if you want a good one you gotta pay for it , grub loader is **** , do you want me to keep going ???

please replace the **** with shit hahaha Here linux new taglines : Linux giving you shit for free :O

  • Steven hakings wife uses linux

  • The top reason is Linux has no intention in trying upsell you .

Open up a windows pc and your being told to buy crap off the bat , buy a mac and be prepared to pay $349.00 to extend the warranty past a year( or phone tech support past 90 DAYS . Try Ubuntu , take a good 2 hours to get use to it, and welcome to a better OS

  • lol out of all that bs the fact that its free is the only one that is a viable argument...linux go jump off a cliff

  • 1:00 4; no virus/adware... 45 for linux??? might be misleading, I'm all for promoting Linux, and I hate that Apple lie to their customers, please don't do the same thing for Linux. If there is any hope to ending the PC vs Mac war, Linux must come out on top, that way, the 2 billion dollar companies will be like "Sh!t, we're losing to a free OS... we gotta get our act together and make our product super good." thus making the competition between the 3 OS's very good.

  • this vid was created by Stevin hauking's wife!

  • More like 1000 or so distros and growing.

I mean there are sick ones that run pentium 2 and can stil have a good interface or if you are candy eye person, there are a few that are much pretty than even windwos 7 and more light on resources.

Ubuntu is a first go to get the feeling then you start searching.

  • your account has been suspended on your website

  • You forgot "wobbly windows" and those other effects. Shame on you.

  • Like this if you clicked the back button as soon as your heard the computer voice.

  • @schm147 No because they liked the comment.

  • @schm147 then how did you make this comment?? xDD

  • linux is great i can download any distribution for free

  • If you want stability in a distro, use Linux Mint 9 Isadora, (based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS lucid lynx) Mint 11 was too buggy for me and more of a "downgrade"

  • If you want stability in a distro, use Linux Mint 9 Isadora, (based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS lucid lynx) Mint 11 was too buggy for me and more of a "downgrade"

  • @theguru4allofyou Because in cases wine is better than using Windows

  • 11 suckers just woken up from a coma and don't realize they are still using a Commodore 64 running on acid batteries!

  • Can linux play the up coming Battlefield 3?

  • @DSRvmv111 Yeah it can

  • @TheLizardGamer Don't ever make me laugh that hard again please.

  • @DSRvmv111 But it can! Using Wine a program that has it's own windows environment

  • @murderslastcrow

And compiz crashes within 5 minutes on ubuntu 11.04 here.

  • is not this Microsoft TTS thingy?

  • Is Unix a Bell Lab program based off of USA Army program from WW2 code breaking.?

  • Linux is stable also, i installed Ubuntu 11.04 beside Windows 7 on my girlfriend's laptop and boy she was surprised xD She loved Ubuntu's purple, Windows is good IF u have the hardware for it :b

  • @91jmda linux runs on like 99% of all hardware lol

  • @TeruMikami2345 I wonder what could be that lonely 1% ;)

  • @91jmda mac machines lol, they dont want anything running on them but mac and windows on bootcamp

  • @TeruMikami2345 But you still can run minty linux in a Macbook if you wanna xD man i hope my distro hopping settles down with Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS x.x

  • @91jmda i know u can run it, but it takes proprietary drivers usually and i never stick to lts releases, i'm currently using 11.04 and switching to 11.10 in 2 months

  • Windows 7 can be free too ;)

  • @TGWTH Yes we know it can be free *cough* torrent *ahem* xD

  • I wish Linux was better in the desktop area of computing because it is a popular area of technology for most

  • openbsd is the most secure os but linux is good for desktops

  • @kookieless Can Open BSD be turn into a Desktop..? I always wanted to give that a go. Will have to try in a VM some time.

  • @TrippMan666 i can be but linux has more features to it such as more games and web browsers and is simplier but if u wanna use flash u gotta use old firefox 3.6 and u may be able to use chromium from freebsd ports

  • Why no one mentions how hard is installing software not in the software center?

You have to do tons of terminal commands, just to realize you dont have the required libraries to install it. And you cant get a normal answer without asking on forums to what more COMMANDS you need to insert into the terminal to install the freaking program. And most software I wanted to download in the software center were outdated. And how the hell I switch language?

But apart from this, Linux is great.

  • @Nofatigua one of the reasons linux is secure is exacly because all software you install comes from repositories (and some distros use software centers). It depends in the distro, some have their repositories more updated (Arch), but some not (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint), usually to keep it more stable. Installing a third party software, specially a closed one, is never recommended. But i get your point, in the case you need to do that you'll gonna need to use terminal, but hey! It's not that bad ;)

  • @Nofatigua apt-get install programname. I installed library by figuring out the names and including - instead of dots. it takes a while to get used to but once you get used to it its not that bad. I actually prefer to use the terminal because it is more updateded anyways. When I was new to the system, it was difficult to figure it out though.

  • @Nofatigua

Dude. That's simply not the case. What do you mean by "tons of terminal commands"? make & configure? If you do so, then you COMPILE, not simply install. There is a difference. Honestly, on which specific occasions do you compile from source? How to switch languages? If you haven't figured out how to do so then you really might not want to use a PC but rather a tablet. Next to that , I was a windows user for more than 20 years. Linux forums are FAR better than MS-related ones.

  • @Hax0rPr0n no sry im not gay like you ;)

  • if the voice wasn't so annoying, this would be a good video

  • I live in southeast Asia. Most of the computer stores here sell new machines (NetBooks) that are pre-loaded with Linux as an alternative to Windows. Do Asians know something that we Americans don't ?

These Asian dudes are pretty geeky here. Damn smart too! I teach them English

    ---American ESL teacher

  • @missionarymayn

They run Linux there because it's more affordable, plus they're stereotypically smarter so they can use it better.

  • how do you make that voice? :O

  • Damn, what an irritating voice.

  • Well this is certainly queer...

  • This voice felt like someone scratching there nails on a chalkboard....

  • 11. Linux sux

  • @murderslastcrow Yea, but installing debian from the netinst iso (Like Ubuntu's minimal CD) takes sometimes even 1 1/2 hour, but that depends on what you install and your internet speed.

  • @merkur32123 First Linux distro I bought was RedHat. 1992..3?, it was in a box full of 144k floppy disks. I don't remember how many, maybe twenty+. The first thing I did when bringing it home was to spend many hours copying each of them, as a backup for when each of them would [surely] fail. [OS2 taught me well, about bad floppies].

    And

I had a faulty floppy disk! I was lucky to be connected to the internet back then and had a hours long delay instead of a month's delay, getting the replacement.

  • Basically Unix and Linux are for the developers..not for the average person... Windows is still the most user friendly OS.

  • @vigilhammer Dude you have never used mac os ten have you?

  • @TheSjheywood Nope... nobody cares about mac in my country.

  • @vigilhammer It is all a matter of choice. I have bought the following MSWindows products, sometimes more of each, as I had, at times, a second or third PC......: 3.0, 3.11, 95, 95SE, 98, 98SE, (no ME) XP, XPSP1, XPSP2, Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, 7, 7 SP1. Thanks to venders, closely tied, happy to provide parts for my PCs. If I don't want Win in a new PC, I have to ask MS if it is alright and if they would please send me a cheque, as I choose not to use it. THAT IS LIKE PULLING TEETH.

  • @heartattackstroke I don't hate MS, I just dislike it. I dislike it's ubiquity. Some people like that. MS sure likes it's ubiquity inside retail boxed PCs.

I use Win for some things. Yep.

All Bill Gates and his buddies did is cash in on a technology that was new, they got what marketers call an edge. A foot in. Or brand awareness. Nothing that MS is doing is rocket science, anyone who reads can work a PC.

  • @heartattackstroke "I don't hate MS, I just dislike it."

Then why do you keep buying their products? You make no sense at all, especially for someone who is using Linux since '91 when WfW 3.11 was released.

"MS sure likes it's ubiquity inside retail boxed PCs."

Don't blame MS, but blame yourself for buying those machines, when you can get a PC without paying one dime for Windows.

  • Ask a merchant if you can buy a PC with a GNU/Linux distro pre-installed. It is likely the slave behind the counter will hand you a line of BS and try to leave the impression he is not allowed to sell boxed PCs in his store without having installed a Windows into it first. That is called preinstalled. That is a racket... No merchant is forced to sell MSWindows inside of their PCs, they have signed a deal with MS that is why Windows is in your PC when you buy it. That deal is a threat. WGA.

  • @heartattackstroke "It is likely the slave behind the counter will hand you a line of BS and try to leave the impression he is not allowed to sell boxed PCs in his store without having installed a Windows into it first."

I say it again; you are NOT forced to buy a PC that has Windows installed! It's your fault for going to the wrong places. The last few years I built my own machines, before that I would go to a local computer business, tell them which hardware I wanted... (continued)

  • @heartattackstroke ...they would build one without Windows. Don't tell me that my little town is so unique and that you don't have a similar business in your area. No....instead of pointing the finger at yourself, let's point at the one everybody likes to blame; Microsoft. This almighty company that is selling well and making lots of money is the bad guy, right? Wrong, you can perfectly survive in this world without Microsoft, Linux and Mac users prove that daily. You're just a whiner.

  • @heartattackstroke Don't blame Microsoft for your own stupidity. Anyways, I have to go, unreasonable people like you are just a pain to communicate with and the pain has already lasted too long ha!

    G'day!

  • @heartattackstroke U get pcs that come loaded with linux....y not go for that rather than crying later?... If u can use linux, stick with it. I`m a programmer, so my machine has unix on it. I did`nt buy microsoft. That does not mean i am criticizing MS in any way. They are a good company and they have provided the desktop to every home thereby making internet as popular as it is today. Not everyone can use a unix machine man... Think on that point as well.

  • @heartattackstroke Dude...that is the main reason why open source got created... to rival windows. Like most shops, these guys, would find every reason to hold back your money. But don't base the appreciation of OS over the money issues man. Like i said earlier and even like u said... its all a matter of choice. I use linux and i am happy with it, but many people prefer windows...cause its just more easier.

  • @vigilhammer

Open source isn't created with any cynical motives. It isn't made to restrict or restrain anyone from doing what they want with it. I am writing this response from a PC with Linux Mint 10 [64] OS. I compiled a custom kernel from source and I have a few patches in it. FAST! FUN! Does everything I Want and MS had no say. I don't have a scsi1 hard drive, so why should I be forced to have kernel support for that type of thing? With MS is all or nothing, you get what you pays for.

    PEACE!

  • @heartattackstroke This is a debate which will never end. It started 25 years back and will continue for a long time.. So yea .. PEACE !

  • @heartattackstroke And you see 99% of the people willing to compile a kernel? lol

  • @heartattackstroke It's funny how you claim good Linux is when you decided to buy about 9 Windows operating systems since around around '91, the time that Linux took off....the irony.

If you think Linux is great on a desktop PC and does everything you want, then stop using Windows, period! That's the best action you can take. When I had discussions in a Linux newsgroup a few years ago, I decided to check the properties of their messages; over 70% was written with Outlook Express!

  • And stop whining about Microsoft and bring up that you have to pay. They demand that you should buy their product 9 times? All this hatred because a company actually wants to get paid for their hard work? Boo hoo....it never crossed your mind that it's paying jobs that drive our economy? After a half a century you haven't figured that one out yet? Mind you, I have nothing against Linux, it's a great server OS and even on the desktop it has its uses, but....

  • @vlptr For each of those time I bought MS Windows, I also bought a PC [MS has worked it that way, see, it is what we call in English a 'business arragement' some call it an 'industrial combine.'

Depending on the mood of the [bought and paid for] law, those could be crimes. ATT was dismantled, it was made into smaller pieces. Some of those pieces are thriving. See, the USA and it's [bought and paid for] courts, USED to BREAK monopolies. Or it claimed too. Seems monopoly is subjective, eh?

  • @vlptr Haha. Over 70% eh?

    So, what did you learn?

    No, really...

  • @vlptr not everyone who uses linux started using it when it first came out, the same can se said about Windows or Mac. I mean that's like slamming someone for driving a car model that the original came out in the 1960's. the person may not have been around back then etc. get over it. to each their own and the haters and whiners can take a long walk off a short pier.

  • About number 9, many distros test proprietary drivers to make sure they're stable first, which is something others most likely don't do. They leave all that up to the card manufacturers.

  • This video about Linux was made with microsoft voice, that's whats up

  • Very nice and precise. Good!

  • LiEnucks sucks you bigot.

  • @xyz98741 Why?

  • why cant some people speak?

  • "Why Linux? Top 10 Reasons for choosing LINUX as your Operating System"

Linux is a fucking kernal. GNU/Linux is an OS

  • @23Stork using that logic would it be in my case Linux Mint/Ubuntu/Gnome/GNU/Linux? in all fairness i dont think anyone who knows a bit about linux forgets about GNU but the general public couldn't care less.

  • @23Stork woooow calm down nerd why don't you go play wow or something ?

  • @23Stork GNU/Linux, X, NVIDIA drivers, KDE, is an OS! but I think you're being pedantic

  • great video Linux rocks I use Linux mint.

  • what is the text --> voice program that u use ????
