Lions has to kill Buffaloes. as the other small prey are to fast in the open space like the savannha. I know there has been a lot of debate over which animal would win in a fight, the cougar or wolf. Only one way to settle it. Someone find the entire fight video and post it. This video is incomplete and was edited to give the impression the cougar killed the wolf. My bet is neither animal won this fight and one of them retreated, most likely the wolf.

@mousavsm In a drawn out cage fight to the death between two full grown average weight males, I would put my money on the cougar because it has claws, is more agile, stronger and probably quicker. I would not dismiss the possibility of a wolf being able to kill the cougar though. The wolf's instinct is for a quick kill and will go for the throat and it also has a greater bite force. If it succeeds at getting the throat it has a very good chance to dispatch the cougar.
@como651 Inherent to their nature, wolves are much more successful as pack animals than they are as loners. This also gives the wolf a behavioural disadvantage. It's used to coordinating attacks, not taking on animal more powerful than itself one on one. Cougars are lethal and live loner lifestyles. They only depend on themselves, and so, facing a wolf one on one would be something they would be more used to. Add that to the fact that it's already more powerful and quicker.
@mousavsm Many wolfs live as loners and nature has adapted them to be successful this way until they find a mate and start a pack of their own. I won't disagree that in a forced fight to the death with no escape the cougar has the advantage. An encounter in nature with an exit strategy for the wolf the cougar will probably not kill the wolf and may in some rare cases lose to the wolf and possibly die or retreat itself. I'd love to know the actual stats on wolf cougar encounters.

@kenwinning There have been human hikers who have been bitten and held by the neck by cougars and did not die instantly and were able to fight back and in some cases survive the ordeal. A wild wolf is much more adapted for a fight in the wild against a cougar than any human. The wolf has a thick mane, muscular neck and tough skin. The cougar has a short jaw and can't deliver the same bite force as a wolf. Don't think the wolf will go out that easily.
@como651 Good points, but I would never want or care to see a caged fight between ANY animals. The thing that humans would do that a wolf wouldn't is poke at the eyes of a cougar (for example), or hit it on the nose where the cougar is sensitive. A wolf would simply kick and shake which wouldn't be too effective at all if the cougar had it's teeth sunk in. As for a wolf getting to a cougars throat, good luck with that! I cannot see that happening at all.
Why don't you show the entire fight? There is no way that fight was over. That wolf would have gotten back on its feet in a few more seconds. Most likely end of this fight would be one of the two deciding to walk away. It is highly doubtful that either one would have been able to finish off the other since either could retreat at any time. Cougars may be strong but not strong enough to hold down a determined wild wolf.
@como651 I would normally agree with you that neither would want this fight (there are easier prey afterall). But, the cougar is the dominant of the two and it was giving signs for the wolf to back off. The wolf actually attacked and you can see that the cougar may have sunk it's teeth in the dogs head or back of its neck. If that actually happened and the cougar was determined, the wolf is not getting out of that. In pretty much any normal instance where these two fight, the cougar wins....
@mousavsm There are cases of Pit Bull dogs that had to be beat unconscious with a bat before they would let go of someone. Canines are not to be taken lightly and a wild wolf is bigger and stronger than most dogs and it has a killer instinct. Even a 70lb German Shepherd can subdue a grown man. There have been Golden Retrievers known to fight off black bears and survive although mauled severely. The wolf probably would have retreated but I highly doubt it was killed by this cougar.
@como651 I hope the wolf in this video didn't die either. But you can clearly see how powerful the cougar was in this video (comparatively). It was also way too quick for the wolf. At the end when you see that position, if the cougar wanted to kill him, it could have. Cougars have incredible defences, are more agile, and more flexible. Wolves are awesome, but their true success comes in packs, where they can coordinate and use their team work to overwhelm their prey...

I will wager that this fight did not end with the cougar killing that wolf and that within seconds that wolf was on its feet again and likely retreated from the cougar since the food was not worth getting into a life threaten battle over. Someone please find the entire video and post the ending. The cougar may have "beat" the wolf but I doubt that it killed it.

@como651 Yea, I know that a pack of wolves would pose a problem for a cougar. I was talking about if it was a lone wolf. Also, pitbulls have something called a lockjaw. They will literally lock their jaw and, in some cases, you may have to kill them to get rid of the grip. Also, I know a sheppard can subdue a human, but humans are like mice for these types of animals. I don't take canines lightly at all (I love dogs too), I just see a severe disadvantage for them vs a cougar.
@mousavsm A Pitbull cannot lock its jaws as some think. They are no different than any other dog. They have been breed to grab a hold of another dog by they neck to kill them. It is simply the attack style they were bred for in order to make them suited for dog fighting in which the fight can be decided then broken up with a water hose and the dog can be reused for future fights. A wild wolf would also go for the throat and are stronger, faster and better at killing than any dog.

@user2011rb, A Dogo is a Mastiff and the most ferocious Mastiff of them all. They are breed to kill both Wild Boars and Cougars. I agree most dogs would end up as lunch meat against the average Cougar but not the Dogo. Wolverines are even more ferocious and deadly. They are apex predators in their environment which means NO ANIMAL preys on them. They encounter Bears, packs of Wolves and Cougars yet none would normally dare to take on a Wolverine which at 50 lbs reigns supreme in it's world.....

True, they are apex predators, but do not claim that no wolverine has ever met it's end from bears or wolves. I've seen many videos on youtube of wolverines getting killed by wolves or bears, they put up a great fight, but they're just too small in the end to defend themselves against something a hundred times it's size

Secondly, even when cats fight, getting to the neck of another cat is near impossible. What makes you think a wolf (which is much slower) could possibly do this? Finally, cat defenses are far better than wolf defenses. A cat can use it's razor sharp claws and strong legs to do damage (even when in a defensive posture). A wolf can't do much when the cat has sunk it's teeth in.

A wolf isn't born to fight one on one. In fact, if it was by itself it would probably die just to being unable to eat! Biology just deems the mountain lion a much more fit apex predator. At least one on one. 85% success rate at killing targeted prey puts it at the top as the most successful predator on Earth.

Bears can weigh upwards of 3/4 of a ton while Honey Badgers top the scale at 30 lbs yet every animal on this list are all lethal hunters. Jaguars weigh 200-350 lbs. Wolverines weigh 35-50 lbs. This video is incomplete and was edited to give the impression the cougar killed the wolf. My bet is neither animal won this fight and one of them retreated, most likely the wolf.

@mousavsm In a drawn out cage fight to the death between two full grown average weight males, I would put my money on the cougar because it has claws, is more agile, stronger and probably quicker. I would not dismiss the possibility of a wolf being able to kill the cougar though. The wolf's instinct is for a quick kill and will go for the throat and it also has a greater bite force. If it succeeds at getting the throat it has a very good chance to dispatch the cougar.

@como651 Inherent to their nature, wolves are much more successful as pack animals than they are as loners. This also gives the wolf a behavioural disadvantage. It's used to coordinating attacks, not taking on animal more powerful than itself one on one. Cougars are lethal and live loner lifestyles. They only depend on themselves, and so, facing a wolf one on one would be something they would be more used to. Add that to the fact that it's already more powerful and quicker.

I won't disagree that in a forced fight to the death with no escape the cougar has the advantage. An encounter in nature with an exit strategy for the wolf the cougar will probably not kill the wolf and may in some rare cases lose to the wolf and possibly die or retreat itself. I'd love to know the actual stats on wolf cougar encounters.

@kenwinning There have been human hikers who have been bitten and held by the neck by cougars and did not die instantly and were able to fight back and in some cases survive the ordeal. A wild wolf is much more adapted for a fight in the wild against a cougar than any human. The wolf has a thick mane, muscular neck and tough skin. The cougar has a short jaw and can't deliver the same bite force as a wolf. Don't think the wolf will go out that easily.

The thing that humans would do that a wolf wouldn't is poke at the eyes of a cougar (for example), or hit it on the nose where the cougar is sensitive. A wolf would simply kick and shake which wouldn't be too effective at all if the cougar had it's teeth sunk in. As for a wolf getting to a cougars throat, good luck with that! I cannot see that happening at all.

Why don't you show the entire fight? There is no way that fight was over. That wolf would have gotten back on its feet in a few more seconds. Most likely end of this fight would be one of the two deciding to walk away. It is highly doubtful that either one would have been able to finish off the other since either could retreat at any time. Cougars may be strong but not strong enough to hold down a determined wild wolf.

But, the cougar is the dominant of the two and it was giving signs for the wolf to back off. The wolf actually attacked and you can see that the cougar may have sunk it's teeth in the dogs head or back of its neck. If that actually happened and the cougar was determined, the wolf is not getting out of that. In pretty much any normal instance where these two fight, the cougar wins....

Canines are not to be taken lightly and a wild wolf is bigger and stronger than most dogs and it has a killer instinct. Even a 70lb German Shepherd can subdue a grown man. There have been Golden Retrievers known to fight off black bears and survive although mauled severely. The wolf probably would have retreated but I highly doubt it was killed by this cougar.

At the end when you see that position, if the cougar wanted to kill him, it could have. Cougars have incredible defences, are more agile, and more flexible. Wolves are awesome, but their true success comes in packs, where they can coordinate and use their team work to overwhelm their prey...

@como651 Yea, I know that a pack of wolves would pose a problem for a cougar. I was talking about if it was a lone wolf. Also, pitbulls have something called a lockjaw. They will literally lock their jaw and, in some cases, you may have to kill them to get rid of the grip. Also, I know a sheppard can subdue a human, but humans are like mice for these types of animals. I don't take canines lightly at all (I love dogs too), I just see a severe disadvantage for them vs a cougar.

It is simply the attack style they were bred for in order to make them suited for dog fighting in which the fight can be decided then broken up with a water hose and the dog can be reused for future fights. I think a cougar is pound for pound a stronger animal.

I used to have a wolf for a pet.
I've seen one cougar in the wild, when it saw me it jumped from the road to the upper road bank, about 15 feet laterally, and at least 15 feet up. There is no way I would have wanted that thing to fight my "dog". It would have ripped him to shreds.

I agree most dogs would end up as lunch meat against the average Cougar but not the Dogo. Wolverines are even more ferocious and deadly. Secondly, even when cats fight, getting to the neck of another cat is near impossible. What makes you think a wolf (which is much slower) could possibly do this? Finally, cat defenses are far better than wolf defenses. A cat can use it's razor sharp claws and strong legs to do damage (even when in a defensive posture). A wolf can't do much when the cat has sunk it's teeth in.

This clip came from Marty Staufer... basically this was a staged bunch of nonsense. Probably two tamed hand raised animals screwing around. Besides Wolves don't fight like that, in every national geographic presentation wolves tend to fight in a very mobile fashion... fight like a butterfly sting like a bee. In this farce of a video the wolf just kind of lunges forward, gets overwhelmed and doesn't even appear that distressed once on the ground.

felines rule our animal kingdom..its undenyable.. and hunting is for the simple minded. When i find some spare time rather than kill an animal I read books. If its not for survival its because of a need to compensate for a tiny penis. Unfortunately society has deemed this an acceptable way of pleasure (killing animals) and through regulations and rules has managed to now rely on this redneck stricken sport to balance certain populations.

Anyway, I would not doubt a cougar would outmatch a wolf, but in normal circumstances, the cougar would be killed, back away, or flee. Wolves travel in packs usually, cougars, not so much. Now lions, on the other hand.....

Put the NASTIEST OF THE NASTIEST DOGS (any kind) in a cage with a cougar and it wouldn't last a minute before the wild animal would rip it's jugular out. Domestic dogs are pussies compared to wild cats. Dogs hunt in packs. Other than lions cats are solitary hunters. Felines will ALWAYS beat canines. See video for obvious proof.
