But I'm using the XI song to clips from Final Fantasy X, hence, I named the song and then the video source, as with all of my AMVs. I don't see why I would have to declare a song by Guided By Voices was not used in FFX anymore than I should say "Distant Worlds" wasn't. It's just an AMV--why should anyone assume this song is from FFX? And if justjamie knew it was from FFXI, why would she need to say so? I clearly know it too, but it's unrelated to my AMV, I think.
Hey everyone... thx for your nice words about the fun experience of working on the FF project & the live concerts. Now I'm looking forward to the special opportunity to join Nobuo and Arnie for the Chicago show in December. What a cool thing to follow the release of my solo record "Chasin the Sun" (more info on my website & iTunes)
Susan you're one of my favorite singers. I absolutely love your voice! Im so glad I had happened to stumble upon your performance of Suteki da Ne. It was absolutely wonderful! I hope that in the future you will be singing more songs for Final Fantasy :) It would please me to no end.
I'm a great, GREAT, VERY GREAT fan of Nobuo... but i don't like very much this song :\ ... but i'll still love Nobu-san anyway XD However, Susan has a wonderful voice...!
Wow really? This song is so beautiful to me--the first time I heard it, I fell in love instantly! I can't imagine anyone not liking it. Well everyone has their opinion I guess. I'm a HUGE UEMATSU fan too by the way!! I couldn't get enough of his music since I played FF Legend II. I was only about 11 back then... And today some 10 years later, I still absolutely love his music!! All my friends/family already got sick of me playing his music... Oh they'll never understand, sob sob.... JK!!
Its hard to really compare singers because Hikaru and Aki are doing a different genres of music. It is kinda like comparing Apples to bananas, yeah there both fruit but different kinds. I do believe Calloway is an amazing choice for this more classical style piece.
Opinions really. I never heard Utada or Angela live, but all three women have a different style. Susan Calloway was pretty impressive live when I heard her sing this song along with Suteki Da Ne & Kiss Me Goodbye though.
Thanks for putting this up on Youtube. Great video!
I'm going to see the Distant Worlds concert today in Grand Rapids, and after knowing this theme from playing FFXI, I had to know how Susan sang this song since she's going to be there.
Again, thanks. She does have a beautiful, yet commanding voice.
I know what you mean when you said that FF10 was conveyed in a joking manner... but the story was pretty serious. If you know the RPG Xenogears(or Xenosaga, much more emotional), you could see similitaries between its story and FF10's story... except that FF10 had lighter characters and a weird direction/staging(how do you say mise en scene for a game?)... I don't know... FF10 had a weak effect on me (even if the ending scene is emotional).
By the way, awesome video (FF11 song is gorgeous).
FFX might've been a better game if it were based more on the feeling you get from this video and XI's music (feeling). In other words, if X had been a bit more serious. Maybe it's just me, but when I played X it seemed like everything conveyed was in a bit of a joking manner. It made me not care for it very much.
It's interesting that you mention that. I've always liked FFX because to me it seems more serious (this is why I have no interest in FFX-2) and has such scope. Tidus is a very cheerful and fun protagonist but the story gets pretty grave pretty quick despite that, I've always thought.
I'm curious if you have a good example for a more serious game. I haven't played many FF games but I do know a bit about most of them, so if you have an example I'd be really interested to hear your ideas on it.
Well FF7 was mostly pretty serious, although in a different way with a different feeling, and FF8 felt pretty much how this video does to me, but the best example I have would probably have to be The Legend of Dragoon. I loved that game, and it's very serious and mature in its drama.
I guess it was mostly Tidus that influenced my thoughts on the game. Even in the serious moments, it didn't seem like he was trying to be, or maybe he was, but the voice actor/voice didn't portray it well.
That wasn't the only thing that made me not really like it, though, but it was probably the biggest reason. I think I expected them to make something new and different with X, and it ended up being another of the same kinda thing, except that it was done better in previous FF's. Maybe XII will be what I wanted with X.....or maybe not.
I also just want to say that I don't mind at all a game that's not serious. I loved the Zelda games, and those were always closer to a kid's fairy tale. It's just if a game is trying to be serious for the sake of having drama, but doesn't do it well, that's what I don't like. Which is what I thought with X.
Actually, now that I think about it, the whole atmosphere of the game felt to me like it was the same as Tidus' personality. So the "serious" moments felt like they were covered with a light layer of sarcasm. I think that's what it mostly was that gave me this perception. I actually only played halfway through it, but I don't think the rest would've felt any different to me.
Wow, such a lot of comments! I try and respond to as much as I can. :)
FFVII I tended to take less seriously then FFX, I think because of it's tone and a lot of the sillier miniquests and such (it's hard to take things like the drag scene seriously, but that's what makes it fun). Obviously serious events were occuring but a lot of the time the the characters tended to be flippant and they joked around a lot. Cloud came off as way more sarcastic to me then Tidus and less positive.
I had Tidus pinned as being so out of the loop that he didn' t know how to respond to things so he tended to not take them seriously. It changes over the course of the game though. By the end of it he's carrying the full impact of what's going on which makes it even sadder when he tries to appear cheery and blaise.
I can't really speak to the new/different thing as it was my first FF and my favourite so I tend to judge the others by that standard but maybe it's different going the other way.
Anyways, thanks for the lengthy response, I don't usually have a chance to discuss the game or anything so it's nice to hear your opinions on it. :D
(sub-note: I also agree with you totally on the Zelda thing, it mixes in serious elements but it's definitely more of a fun fairy-tale type game, which is it's appeal. OoT is right up there with FFX on my list of favourites, though they are very different games)
Yeah, you're right about VII, but I did say "mostly." It goes back and forth, but does it with skill.
Hmm...maybe my going into it expecting something different than what it was somehow changed my view of it a little...I don't know, but I like your explanation on Tidus. Maybe I was wrong.
I still think it was very high quality, as all Square RPG's were. Did you play Legend of Dragoon?
Yeah, I'd recommend it, but only if you have time for it and think you would want to play it. It might be a little hard to get a copy of now. It's for Playstation. It came out around the same time as FF8.
No, it hasn't, but your PS2 is fine. So far, Sony has made all Playstations backwards compatible with the previous systems' games. You just need to find the game.
You might wanna read about it online first, though. You may not think it's amazing, but I liked it a lot. Just look it up at IGN or Gamespot and read a bit about it.
XD Definitely not, although your comment made my day. I have a rather wretched voice actually.
But thanks for the compliment on the video anyways.
The track is part of a much longer one called "Memoro de la Stono/Distant Worlds" from the official album of the Distant Worlds tour, but obviously it has Calloway's voice and is not purely instrumental so I don't know if that's helpful or not.

@vlastislavich Couldn't be too obvious, or you would have changed the title and the description. X and XI are completely different games.

@kilyk Indeed. At the Chicago show, I'd have to say this song was probably tied for my second favorite song, and I've never even played FF XI.

Susan Calloway is better than both Utada Hikaru AND Angela Aki. Especially when she performs live.
