I made a version of this stove using three tea lights, and it boils 2 cups of water in about 5 minutes at 5280 ft. But my current problem is that I am running out of fuel in about 7 minutes. How long does the Klasslite burn? And any suggestions for a longer burn time with less refilling?
Oops, my bad! I didn't take into account that increasing the external cylindrical burn area would prevent air from effectively getting to the top horizontal surface thus losing it, so you won't get 3-1/3 minutes of boil time--more like 5 or 5-1/2. Ideally then. 1/4 inch extention will at least shorten the boil time to about 6 minutes.
I tend to shoot from the hip and make assumptions from my equations that don't always follow, so sorry about that!
Furthermore, to vary the dynamic range of your stove, you could roll up enough wick to extend the height about twice the tea light cup height (3/4") then add a sliding collar to the cup. Your range will vary from 10 minutes to around 3-1/3 minutes for different cooking situations. That's a lot of performance coming out of such minute addition of weight.
A caution to my last comment. Fiberglass has binder glue in it, so it burns yellow untill that is burned off. Some are using fiberglass rope or carbon felt which should burn cleaner.
Hi Jason! 2 substantially increase your burner's wattage & reduce your boil time, roll up a slightly tight wad of pipe wrap fiberglass insulation to extend 1/4 inch above the rim of the tea-light cup. Soak it in 1/2 ounce of methanol. Your boil time will now be about 6 minutes instead of 10, simply because you increased the surface area of combustion.
The time formula for an 1.5 inch tealight cup boil is t=30/(3+8h), where h is the new height of the cup because of the extended insulation.
I think a little bit is left to be desired as to the heat output, as a popcan stove seems to put out alot more heat, but I'm not trying to compare the two.
With that being said, I think I want to make one anyway...the real novelty of this idea to me is the simplicity of the design. It's so easy, it's almost a crime not to make one. Good video too. I like the idea that Mr. Yuk stickers make things work when properly placed....funny!
Hey Jason... going camping this weekend up in the Adirondacks. Since it's backpacking, my only cookset will be a Heiny pot and my Klasslite stove. If I remember to bring my video camera, I'll post something up!!!
I made one of these and it works great. The bottom on mine is made from a takeout food tin. I also have a similar one made with the bottom of an energy drink can, using fiberglass as a wick. That one has boiled water for me down to -15F in my Foster's pot. The Klasslite will be my go-to for summer backpacking. Thanks for the idea!
Some stoves allow for inverting but Jetboil and Snowpeak do not. For me 20 and below is toooo cold. Maybe the isopro mix solves the butane problem. Bic lighters quit working very quick. Thanks for your help. Your efforts are much appreciated.
Butane stoves are better in cold weather, huh? None of my butane works at all in cold. Propane is better and white gas is most dependable of all. There are always trade-offs for weight, volume , and efficiency. Under most conditions your stove seems excellent. Always looking to improve.
They work if the canister is upside down. I deep winter conditions (especially for melting snow) I always use a white gas. But I've used my Snowpeak Gigapower in the teens and twenties with no problem. I suppose it depends on that your definition of "cold" is. ;)
Sorry, I've been busy and haven't had time to answer these questions. Here goes:
-The fuel I use is S-L-X brand denatured alcohol. You can buy it in the paint section at Home Depot near the paint thinners.
-It is dependable and reliable but it's slow so you have to be patient. Also, it's not the best in very cold or windy weather--a butane stove would be better.
-The stove burns between 10 and 12 minutes when filled to the brim.
I just survived 11 days in N. Arkansas with no electricity. The tealight (Klasslite) stove was the best of all my alcohol stoves. It holds 2-1/2T denatured alcohol and burns 14 minutes. The Trangia was the next best. All the rest wasted too much fuel. I sure thank you for turning me on to it. When everyone was mobbing Wal-Mart for propane, I walked calmly to the paint department and bought all 3 cans of denatured alcohol. No one was interested in that.
I've seen a few of your videos and most of them comment about the "yuck" sticker. They're much cooler than drawing POISON with sharpie. Where do you get them?
Love this setup you made. Thanks for sharing with us all. I would like to know where to get and what it is that you made your pot stand portion. Going to make one this weekend. Love DIY equipment. So much fun to use knowing its homemade.
Jason great job looks nicely done so I had to build one my self and i have to say the 1 I made for the MSR kettle work great it does add a few extra min to the boil time but hay I set the stove light it up and then i finish setting up camp when I am done chow is ready cant beat it I carry mine in a normal size green bean can for protection of the stove .
Love that you've 'taken ownership' by calling it the KlassLite - and a great play on spelling since it is first Class ;-)
Thanks for sharing this and all of your others videos. Much appreciated!
Cheers from J

If they cant fill or light this stove, they really shouldn't be camping away from home all alone.

Hi Jason
Just wondering if you still use this stove as your primary one? If so, how do you like it after using it for a while?
I tried this today and it did not work because I did not have a mr. yuck sticker:( lol
Nice video!!

Not primary. I pretty much take a different stove every trip now because I like to test.

Where can you buy empty lens cleaning solution bottles and what is the volume for the bottle your use?

As far as I know, you can't buy them empty. Make friends with someone who wears contacts. :)
