Its an African Elephant will know for "running" if it feels threatened. Most likely it has had some unpleasant memories of humans prior to this and was acting on it. How would you react after you were darted in the arse?

In nature is it either fight or flight. No hugs and kisses there. Looks like and elephant saw it was surrounded and feeling there was no escape chose fight. But that would change to flight...

the elephant was darted, correct? it was asleep when it was pulled out of the mud. so when it woke up it didn't understand that the humans mean no harm. all it sees is a loud noisy threatening crowd.
