@Ncharlestun I am one of the young ones that know all about Felix Pappalardi. He was the soul of Mountain. The best bassist and producer that ever lived. Im honored to own his bass guitars and amps and a bunch of other stuff. Check out my tribute to Felix Pappalardi were i pull out Felixs bass and his Sunn amps. I will never forget Felix Pappalardi. My all time favorite musician who taught Leslie how to play. West never was the same after Felix. West just played better when Felix was with him.
@ALBERTromano1965 I saw Mountain with Felix here in Charleston, SC back in the late seventies after they had reunited. I remember Felix shouting "Mountain is back Mountain is back!" I am sure I still have my ticket stub. After school we would listen to Mountain records on a crappy old wooden stereo and turntable at my friend's house while playing pool. Couldn't get enough of Imaginary Western, Nantucket, and Never In My Life. Too bad FM radio couldn't get past Mississippi Queen. Felix sang great

This band must have been LOUD!!!! Notice the way they have roadies on either side of the SUNN stacks trying to keep them from toppling over! Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those amps "hand-me-downs" from Hendrix? I heard that Hendrix had a deal with SUNN and decided he didn't like them due to the lack of midrange, and gave them to Mountain. Leslie West sure seems like he's having fun with them, seeing if he can topple a roadie with blasts from his little Les Paul junior!
Hilarious to think every Sat. night back then, maybe even as this was played, there was a spinning pool of straight - faced crap on T.V. called the Lawrence Welk show. Goes to show you how far back and forward the music goes - then, before, now, and in the future. Leslie West is a giant spirit visiting us with his little guitar in order to blow our minds - then and now again! Thanks for this treasured glimpse at the gods at play. Sampled who? Covered this - whaaaat? Don't think so. Peace
@arhatyellow The musicians on Lawrence Welk show were top notch and I doubt even Mountain would not appreciate their talent. If you are a true musician you would not make fun of other virtuosos such as trumpeters, violinists, and vibraphonists of the caliber of those on Lawrence Welk.
Just learned to play this, and looking at this freaks me out big time. Three dudes and walls of watts. Still, the best sound is the studio. But this is just nuts. Go Corky!
Look at the wall of cops....Damn I coulda walked there from Ludlow ave if i wasn't a punk ass 12. The local establishment was bound and determined to stop this acid head shit . Remember this is the home of the Taft's. Back then they saw us as genetic defective acid heads. OK they were half right! man what fun!!!
dreams of milk and honey has the most raw and powerful riff i've ever heard, and gotta the solo in the beginning, brutal guitar playing of leslie, he's amazing
looks like there were quaaludes aplenty at this show...i saw Mtn twice outdoors, once at the Goose Lake festival in Michigan a year after woodstock, and again the next summer at Antoch College in yellow springs ohio....
leslie if you are reading this THANK YOU for the memories and your contribution to rock and roll. i played professionally for 24 years and you will stay on my top 3 list for all time. i saw you live in early 70s and eyes were wide as saucers staring in disbelief... stay cool man
@depper Again i agree with you 100%! West would have destroyed anyone at this time period. Line them up 1 by one West would have blown them all off the stage. Hendrix included and i love Jimi, but i give West the credit. This is the real deal Mountain. The best band of all time.
Notice Steve Knight just STOPS playing after the opening licks! This band having a keyboardist NEVER made sense to me! What does he contribute to the overall sound of the band? In The Doors, Ray Manzarek WAS the band's sound due to a weak drummer and guitarist. But you can barely hear Knight over Leslie's "wall" and Corky's pounding! Should've just been a power trio.
tottaly agree, leslie told in a interview that he never liked the keyboardist in the band too, he was there just so the band didn't look like a cream imitation,
@LucasMarquesGHC I'm not surprised by that comment actually, keyboardist just there so the band doesn't look like a "Cream" imitation, Knight really was just there for 'appearances' , the "weak link" who contributed as much to the sound of this band as a "tambourine" player would.
By the way, this festival is the kind I think a band like Black Sabbath would have fit in well at, considering who else was here (Alice, Iggy, Grand Funk Railroad)--the "future of rock" was on display!
I read an interview where Hendrix said he liked Mountain and would come out to see them. Some of Lesile's riffs and vocals parts in this song are more apparent in "Dreams.." than probably any other Mountain song. I think this is probably what attracted him.
@jayleeds2006 I think Hendrix just admired any guitarist who could hold onto notes for dear life! he said the same about ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, who is very similar in style to Leslie.
What a Origanal sound nothing added in just puree musical fusion :P so cool They said Mountain were one of the lowed'st bands of the time but that might not be true....how leslie shred's the guitar is a amazing gift and telent :)
Many teenagers over the past 38 years have tried to emulate Leslie's string bending skills, and amazingly, I haven't heard ONE who has succeeded. The BEST signature sound in ALL of Rockdom.
@depper I will show you that i have succeeded in emulating Wests bending skills. I had no choice. At 14 Leslie would teach me his vibrato till i got it perfect. West would make me hold his wrist and he would say. Its all in my wrist Al. Id often get i kick from West if i wasnt doing it right. I sort of dont want to show people how its done because nobody could figure it out. if West didnt show me i wouldnt have dreamed it. ill be doing some tribute Videos to west and Felix soon. God willing..
My high school band listened to this version of the song along with the one in the Dream Sequence at the Fillmore. We tried to imitate it - didn't care that people couldn't dance to it. West has this amazing vibrato. No one else can duplicate it.
