@TheLyreGuy It was made by the person who made the instrument. But it's held like an "Erhu" bow, and you hold it backwards from the way you'd hold a normal violin bow.... everything about this instrument is a little backwards :)
sorry, I realize you are probably asked this on a regular basis, but where would a person likely find one of these without travelling to Tuva? Can they be home built etc thanks and great vid
Thanks! :) I have a thin piezo pickup that is slid under the bridge (a violin pickup made by David Gage, called The Realist). a 1/8 inch jack plugs into that and has a 1/4 inch jack to plug into an amp, etc.
If you ever come to the Netherlands send me a message because i realy like to see how the combination between my band's experimental folk/jazz/metal and your music turn out to be.
it's a very thin flexible "piezo" type of pickup that slides under the bridge, they sell them for violins, it picks up the physical vibrations and sends the signal to get translated into sound, the same way an electric guitar pickup sends the magnetic signals of its metal strings vibrating, kind of sort of I think :) though the strings on an igil are many strands of nylon (ok, it's fishing line string!) traditionally were horse tail hair, but even the traditional players use nylon strands now.
I certainly appreciate the approach of making contemporary sounds and music with old and unusual instruments, but using a lot of effects to get the sound somewhat diminishes the character of the instrument in question. I think you'd get more out of them if you tried to create something modern and interesting solely with the natural, raw sound of the instrument, rather than hiding them behind layers of digital manipulation.
I've watched quite a few of your videos, all great stuff. Your creativity is evident, I hope you don't take my criticism to mean that I don't dig your work :)
Nope, not at all, eggs, welcome the comments. Once I find my "sound" with the instrument, it'll probably end up being less "out there" as far as effects go, while still (hopefully) being unique and creative... still not sure what that'll be yet, lol, but it's been a fun journey so far. -John
The strings are really a bunch of parallel strands of nylon fishing string, about 100 on the low string and 70 on the higher string. Used to be horsehair traditionally, but now even the Tuvan's use the fishing line for their own instruments.
Great stuff as always man, didn't want it to end, really got off there at the end. So is this just a hobby of yours or do you ever plan on selling your work, or do you already?
Thanks guys! Hey Max, didn't use software for the effects, it all came out of one little box called an AdrenaLinn III. Not sure how things get featured either, oldwhtman, one of my other vids got featured on the Music Category page for a week, but that's probably only about 1/1000th of the exposure a home page feature gets. I think it bumped it up about 30,000 views though, so still cool.
I'm not sure how one gets featured on youtube's home page, but that's where you belong. Excellent video. Excuse me ... I need to watch that bass player again.
Out of Site man!, Oh yay!, that bass player is so cool looking, lol, your whole video is great in sight and sound!!!, IMO, perfect mix of both your live playing and adding video footage inbetween, cool, your getting into the video part as well, Woohoo!!!, strait to favs this one
Does anyone have a rag? I need to wipe off some funk after watching this. Good Stuff!
