drums are weak in this. i never felt like they tried to fully emulate keith moon when he was gone. and don't tell me you can't---you can. i'm a drummer and he's influenced me more than anyone, and i can probably emulate him spot on. his gift wasn't that he was the only one who COULD do it----keith's gift was that he was the one who DID. once he was gone, the who never tried to keep that energy alive.
The second "drumkit" you mentiond is actually the percussionist, Jody Linscott's set up. She's an incredibly talented percussionist. She's preformed with not only the who, but toured with each surviving member of the group individually as well as David Gilmore (Pink Floyd), Santana, The Clash, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and many more.
I saw The Who at the Oval Cricket ground. Keith played the drums with cricket bats, well wrecked them really!!! In fact think we were all wrecked. The support band were Rod and the Faces.
W.A.S.P. are inspired by the who and Blackie made friends with Pete Townsend. To be fair, W.A.S.P. made the best cover song ever when they recorded 'The real me', not an easy feat to cover The Who. Check out this cover from W.A.S.P. and tell me it is not better. W.A.S.P. have pulled off the same trick twice, when they covered Mountains 'Mississippi Queen', and made better and already classic. Long live W.A.S.P. & long live 'The Who'. Jul, 2011.
I was at this show in 96 about 10 rows from the front. On the day we saw Jools Holland' s R&B Orchestra, Alanis Morrisette, Bob Dylan featuring Ronnie Wood then The Who and finally Eric Clapton. The Who were joined by an all star cast for Quadrophenia and the comperes included Frank Bruno and Billy Connolly.
Incredibly as it was a Princes Trust gig, tickets were only £8!
no no no ... keith moon ... u cannot replace him ... i mean seriously The Who shld quit ... its not the same without THE GOD himself ... please guys ... i mean the guy on the drum was good but not crazy ... he cannot get bombs in his drums ... so whats the point ... it and will always be keith moon RIP
@Flerg3: Gary Glitter was jokingly swinging a microphone during rehearsals and accidently hit Daltrey in the eye. I saw what Daltrey looked like without the patch and it was disgusting. Totally gross. He almost lost his eye.
@fontanalu: Ha! They should have changed "Behind Blue Eyes" to "Behind One Eye"; "I Can See For Miles" to "I Can't See Ten Feet In Front Of Me"; "Eyesight To The Blind' to "Eyesight to Blindness";
I knew John Entwistle was a brilliant bassist but I reckon this song shows exactly how good he was. As others have mentioned it is basically a bass solo throughout. Its also more like a 'Lead Bass Guitar' with a rhythm guitar accompaniment! Awesome!
I know the who is incredible, its been said here plenty of times... but jools holland is a badass too, i can't imagine meeting so many incredible artists in one lifetime.
merman153 Who the fuck are W.A.S. P ? Where the fuck have you been ? How long have you been alive ? Take your blinkers off. The Who ain't the only band on this earth.
I was a little more far at the begining of the concert (when Alanis Morissette and Bob Dylan). But after hours and hours of concert I was so close from the stage when The Who (and Eric Clapton later) played. At the end I was exhausted but it was an incredible experience!
John's playing a rippin bass solo pretty much through this whole song and the camera gives him 5 seconds total at best. Totally F@#*ing lame! But typical.
@SunsetJunk I totally agree with you.And that is frequent. it`s a shame. Much of the Who strenght comes from his bass. At Amazing Journey film John`s mother says she was sad cause her son always appears much less than the others. I think she is right. Maybe that is the real explanation for that odd skeleton suit...
Pete was still having hearing problems. It took much prompting from Zak Starkey of all people to convince to go electric by 1999 ( although Pete did play some electric for the encores later in the US/Euro Quad Tours ). On electric guitar in this one is Geoff Whitehorn who has done work with Roger and many other bands. When the Quad tour got going in the US he was dumped as the band began to streamline ( which was great because they finally went back to the core set they still employ today)
When I saw The Who in 1997, Pete played electric on "The Real Me", "Is It In My Head", "I've Had Enough", "5:15", "Sea and Sand", the second half of "The Rock" and "Love Reign O'er Me". By then the female singers and Jodi Linscott and Geoff Whitehorn were ixnayed.
Not that any of the extra musicians didn't serve the purpose...Jodi & Geoff have worked with the Who as well solo projects with both Pete & Rog...There is no comparison between the quality of the 73 Quad shows to the 96-97 shows...it was just a slimmed down version. I hear recently that with the stage revival of Quad that The 'Oo may revive that...a mistake but being a fanatic, I'd end up going to multiple shows....
Search out "The John Entwistle Band - The Real Me" and you'll see the master at work! Being his band he gets the majority of the focus, and deservedly so... this song is a 5 minute ripping bass solo!
Pete was innocent. No further charges were made nor material confiscated. There's a difference between credit card details being found on a website and thousands of pictures downloaded. Gary is a paedo, Pete isn't.

I can only HOPE you are right, but WHAT makes you so sure about it? didnt they confiscate THREE computers full of pics there? quite a lot for a " private investigation",no?I love his music and much of what I know about him, but then ....I ´d prefer to give the man " the benefit of the doubt " but in a world where we all are being fooled more and more by celebs and rich ones, I remain sceptical, if you allow.but I agree that the comparison to that punter glitter was rude
benefit of the doubt my ass, he IS innocent completely, and if you were a real Who fan, you would be able to figure that out. They have tried SOOOO hard to make it clear, especially Daltrey, and they even talk about it in their documentary about themselves. There are even press releases where the press apologise, so.
depends how you define "innocent". Glitter was guilty of pursuing his desires.
Pete is guilty of conceit.
A conceit that drove him to be the best guitarist in the best rock band in the world, to kick Abbie Hoffman off stage, to bear his soul about his alcohol and drug problems. I have loved that conceit. But to think that it is more important for a rock star to know what kiddie porn looks like than to consider what his money will promote is mch less forgivable
Roger's eyepatch was the result of an accident during the soundcheck the previous day involving Gary Glitter (who was playing the Godfather at this show) and a mic stand. As I recall there was some doubt as to whether the gig would be able to go ahead. It was an incredible day in the end though.
I'm big fan of The Who and Keith Moon is one of the reasons. It is impossible to predict what he is going to do in next secound, he was playing like he himself didn't knew that and that's why i don't get bored while listening to them, 5 concerts 5 different versions, mainly because of Keith ;)
zak is really good i must say, definitely the best follower and i my opinion great, but still follower.
Jules Holland. He was the original keyboardist for SQUEEZE and is an accomplished Jazz Pianist. He has interviewed Pete several times since 1982. He also has a music variety show on the BBC "later with Jules Holland".
I was there, too. This was an amazing show. The Who were the most memorable and this was the first time I'd heard any of the songs from Quadrophenia. What an introduction.

The elec gtr is not quite up to snuff...its not just a matter of playing the right chords I'm afraid.

Zak Starkey is good but you have to admit he can't replace Keith totally, no one can. His drumming definitely was great though in this video.

Who is that Jockey at the start??

Jules Holland. He was the original keyboardist for SQUEEZE and is an accomplished Jazz Pianist. He has interviewed Pete several times since 1982. He also has a music variety show on the BBC "later with Jules Holland".

I was there, too. This was an amazing show. The Who were the most memorable and this was the first time I'd heard any of the songs from Quadrophenia. What an introduction.
