  • 3.58 Derren : "That was...out of this world..." You magician friends caught the hint... ;)

  • The video is kind of dishonest, because it doesn't show the really important bit, which happens between 2:47 and 3:06 (you can sort of see the beginning of the swap). But yes, as others have pointed out, this is just an adapted card trick.

  • Im afraid...the undertakres trick is just a Tombstone Piledriver

  • All he did was take this from a card trick called "Out of This World". Look it up and thumbs this up so everyone can see.

  • I enjoyed watching this wether its fake or real doesn't matter as long as u believe.

  • Considering how much Derren goes on about not trampling on the memory of the dead, bet this var of "OoTW" made him squirm a bit. Bad Derren! Bad BAD Derren!!! Love him anyway.

  • He said fair two times at the beginning. Unsure what it means but seemed odd to press that word twice.

  • Every time he had to turn a picture around, he put them in the other pile. I think the whole trick was just putting some pictures upside down...

  • Guys, it's 'out of this world'! He tells you himself! :) Cheeky bastard.

  • Brown is an ACTOR. I don't believe this guy.

  • @shoagA Whats there to believe? Its not magic.

  • @GoodEvenings Well, he's doing all these stuff to show that he has some sort of extraordinary powers. I simply don't buy it.

  • @shoagA I bought it, and then I sold it. Then stole it back and pawned it to buy two.

  • Amazing. He's taken one of the absolutely most brilliant card tricks in the world, and disguised it so cleverly, at first, you wouldn't even realize it, if not for the hint at the end where he subtly names the actual trick.

  • at 1:33 he puts the blue clothed lady in the "dead" pile, later at 3:32 when Darren shows the cards, she's in the "alive" pile..it's obviously a card trick. :P

  • @Kataschu I checked that and you're right, she does appear in both piles, however, you can't actually see the back of the blue clothed lady when he flips them over which is an argument pro-supernatural (with one exception)....but who are we kidding. It's a card trick. Of course it's a card trick... and Derren's face often reveals that he has deceived his man as he does in 3:59.

  • @Kataschu You're right she switched piles.

  • The people in the dead pile looked miserable, and the people in the Alive pile looked happy or plesant. thats what it was

  • Did he explain what's the cach?

  • thumbs up if you came from a wresling video

  • that's out of this world...

  • i think that he gave a bunch of random photos to people and got a general population average of who thinks they "like" this person and who "disikes" that person. Then he put them into two piles of dead and alive.

  • I might have the answer, he asked people in the range of age of the guy he used (I think a brother would give very similar results), and asked them which pictures do they like; I personally don't think the people in the pictures were actually dead, he just marked the ones liked as alive to impress, but let's say he didn't want to lie about that either, in that case he would simply need much more pictures, then take out all the dead people who were chosen as liked, it's that or huge suggestions.

  • lol at the end,"its completly out of this world.

  • Derren Brown could have his own religion, and be a multi-millionaire if he wanted. If he went on that path, he may have been one of the greatest scam artists of his time, but instead he chose to be genuine, and that is a quality that few posses.

  • This reminds me of the part of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories when you are given a set of pictures and have to sort them based on who you think is sleeping and who you think is dead.

  • This is a fairly simple suggestion. The pictures of dead people are deliberately chosen to be depressing and uninteresting while the pictures of living people are all smiles and silly faces. He probably tested the pictures on a bunch of other people before doing this.

  • Ha Ha

There's even a little joke at the end for magicians- listen carefully. A funny and cleaver man

  • this is creepy

  • most of the photos of those who were dead, practically all of them, were put on top of the amount of photos. I also think that the looks of those who were dead, in the photos, seemed pretty unhealthy.

  • Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh that is so scary I mean why did they have to play music when he showed him those who were dead and those who were alive?

  • SHENANIGANS!

  • staged

  • @badassreinitz Proof it? Ur claim dosn´t prove ANYTHING else then ignorance..

  • I had forgotten about this! Thank you for uploading it! It kind makes you think

  • lol @ the very last thing derren said when he was done performing the trick (if you know how its done you'd get the joke)

  • @SlickSwiftProduction haha yeh :D

he did it fr magicians hehe

  • @karankhanna03 - yeah, cracked me up laughing when he said it.

  • OMG!!!! this will make me think a lot.....

  • best vid ever!!!!!!

  • Derren Brown always tries to make a point that there are no such thing as supernatural phenomena or psychic powers. Everything stems from suggestibility. His main problem is that people simply refuse to question their beliefs, thereby proving that they're not as secure in their beliefs as they think. If you are utterly convinced of something, then you should not be afraid of having it questioned.

  • @Domkavosh Maybe, just like myself, Derren don't have the time to converse about beliefs.

  • wat is this about

  • i still dont see where the undertaker is

  • @kobenobe did you not watch the video? The guy seperating the pictures is an undertaker...

  • @Demuredin undertaker is a person from the WWE i cant find him in this lame vid

  • @kobenobe undertakers are also the people that put your ass six feet under.

  • @kobenobe

    WWE is even more lame.

  • How is it linked to -- THE UNDERTAKER -- ??

  • youve all been duped.... just a simple magic trick. nothing with phycological forcing.

  • I think he picked the older and unhappy people who then subconsciously affected him and all those were dead then the alive ones were pretty and young so duh i would have probably done the same

  • I wish it were as majestical as being drawn to their expressions.. that would leave alot to be desired.. thus it is just a card trick.. out of this world to be exact.. with a very clever twist put into it.. wonderful effect nonetheless. goodjob derren

  • this is misleading and bisexual

  • @keybird143

cause i effing well sayd so

  • @justinrulez121 no im like totaly confused can u please explain to me seriously how this comes off misleading and bisexual

  • @keybird143

well it was either bisexual and misleading or fake and gay bu this has nothing to do with the undertaker or wrestling so its misleading and well its actually really gay

  • This one is not one of derren's suggestion videos, it's an actual card trick.

In the beginning, the cards are split, the top half of the deck says alive, while the bottom half says dead. When Derren pulls out the two specific pictures of the people, he is pulling out the "halfay ponts" of each pile, then he slyly combines all the "alive cards" that were on the top of both piles and the "dead cards" that were on the bottom of both piles.

  • @TheDigitalMonk indeed, you are correct. this is a simple trick done with a regular deck of cards that a volunteer splits into blacks and reds. Derren simply gives it a macabre twist.

  • @TheDigitalMonk Ok Derren number 2. Ur statement dosn´t prove ANYTHING AT ALL!! :) ONLY an opinion. He is witout any doubt a mind control freak. But he is the VERY best at it.. And NO! He NEVER ever stated he was supernatural, and he claims that in almost EVERY interview.... But people WILL just not wake up for the facts of humans, he is just VERY good at it, and VERY intelligent.... The oppsite of almost EVRY 1!

  • @TheDigitalMonk you'll have to explain that better, in better detail... im curious to know if you could recreate something like this trick

  • @EmperorElliott Type "fire and ice card trick" into a search bar and practice it with cards first. Then you can just put a Derren spin on it and do photos. The problem with doing it with photos is that the person is going to want to look back and the photos and if they do that, they'll realize that the cards aren't in the piles they put them in. Basically, this trick is going to work a lot better when you've got a camera crew and you can do it 2-3 times before getting it to work perfectly.

  • @TheDigitalMonk And whats your point in typing this, does it make you feel smart you know how its done, and the effect is Out of this world.

  • @TheBradTobin I think you misunderstand me.... Derren Brown is my favorite magician. I'm not trying to knock him down.

  • The dead folks are just posing for a photo, and the live ones are doing something active, and having a good time, which we are naturally attracted to. Intereresting video.

  • Yes, you nailed it, and I see you got some thumbs-down for it.

Derren simply picked some pictures that most people would be subconsciously drawn to or not drawn to, then he wrote ALIVE and DEAD on the backs respectively.

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • nice trick

  • Did this happen by mere suggestion? In this case I wouldn't be so sure because Derren is perfectly capable of staying cool in adverse circumstances as is seen in his other videos.

  • Nope, its not suggestion, its a card trick, without cards ;P

  • that trick was out of this world! very well presented

  • Doesn't OOTW require that you stop halfway through, to switch the marker cards and also a sleight at the end? How did he adapt OOTW here?

  • I have one of Derren's video's on revealed card tricks. He has modified the OOTW trick so each pile all end up the same.

Listen when he says "so why did you pick this person for example" that's the half way photo. He separates each piles at the half way point and when he flips the photo to show "dead or alive" the person misdirected so he can swap the two top piles over when he's not looking. Also some obvious negative and positive photo's so you could flip a few example photo's at the end

  • So a picture of somebody before they died?

  • That's exacly what a trick is it has nothing to do with magical out of this world energy but convincing someone to choose exacly what we want him to choose

  • That's not what I am saying. We both know that it is has nothing to do with out of this world energy, but what I am trying to say is that this is so obvious that it does not qualify as a trick.

His chess video was much better and I still don't know how he predicted or rigged the results of those games. Anyone?

  • Watch the first two again. Those are young and happy people and he puts them in the "dead" pile.

I don't believe in stuff like that - ghosts, angels, devils, interventionist saints.. or an interventionist God but this just gives me the creeps. I wish Derren explained it himself if it's a trick because it's going to be on my mind for some time.

  • @muerteverde : this isnt exactly tru. that is merely a subtelety used by Derek to help him with the mentalism trick. I recently bought this trick and I know how it is actually done. The chance of a spectator noting expression alone isn't enough for a perfect split. The real way its done is very, very clever.

  • @muerteverde 3 of the 1st 5 pictures (all marked as dead) looked happy ..

  • @muerteverde well if derren chose the pictures accordingly to come across that way, well then that itself is trickery. derren doesnt claim hes supernatural, he even says how he combines psychology and all the other skills he has

  • @muerteverde I picked the exact same photos too, its such a simple trick, why pick an ugly photo or a photo of a guy smoking weed or some drunk chick. You pick the photos of happy people with no negative impressions on them.

    So basic...

  • @Xienis you're completely wrong, that's not how it's done at all. I don't get why people act like they know what they are talking about when they actually have no clue lol

  • @muerteverde WRONG! its a trick called "out of this world".

  • @muerteverde well your nice ey are you ugly picture who wants to be your friend

  • @muerteverde well.. that kind of IS the trick... If it wasnt a trick it would have been real, as in real supernatural powers...

  • @SecularSwede no...that's not how it works at all...

  • @muerteverde I do agree with you, but i still dont understand why he put the first photo he looked at in the negative pile. He doesnt look ugly or unhappy and he's smiling. I, personally, would have put him in the positive pile.

  • @BJ9992 same here... i would have put quite a few of the dead to the living.

  • @muerteverde You couldn't be any more wrong, yet your comment has 31 thumbs up? Good guess, but that's not how it's done.

  • @Demuredin its funny nobody agrees with this dude (muerteverde) but he has the 30 plus thumbs up.... 30 accounts maybe?

  • @muerteverde its not obvious! the first guy is young and happy but dead and there are more

  • what a bullshit

  • "that was, that was OUT OF THIS WORLD." LOL

    3:57

    ps

if you know what "out of this world" means, you probably would find it funny.

  • can anyone tell me whats the music in the beginning and the end (with the horns) ?

  • nope... its just a psychological technique. ..

shapes/colors have effects on our mind,

  • no its just a card trick called "out of this world"

when done with playing cards, the volunteer supposedly psychically separate face down cards into a pile of red and a pile of black cards with out ever looking at the faces. Instead of cards, Derren here has done it with pictures and instead of not looking at the face, the volunteer never looks at the backs. But its the same technique and the same method.

Its a good lesson for people out there who thinks derren never uses magic.

  • Where'd he get all those pictures of dead people?

  • I doubt they are actually dead. All he needed were photos of people.

  • I don't know if it was NLP or some shenanigans with the cards or whatever, but the mood and atmosphere in this bit is amazing.

The buildup to where he flips the first card over is a total mind screw.

  • Awesome

  • ;P haha

  • LOLL he takes all the old people to the left and all the 30 - to the right!

  • No, the first three people in the left were all under 30.

  • I too pretty much picked the same pictures as the undertaker and can't explain why... tho I did guess after a while that some were dead just from the context of the video.

  • Yes indeed...that was "out of this world". ;)

  • Interestingly, I made all the same choices as the guy, which leads me to believe he carefully organized the photos to be "good" or "bad" for everyone and then he could've just written dead on the bad and alive on the good.

  • He reads people extremely well, it's the most important thing you can learn.

  • or the pictures that are backwords they go in the dead right ways go in alive

  • This is very nicely done. Nothing to do with the images and nothing to do with NLP nor suggestion by the way. Just study exactly what Derren does with the cards.

  • Well this one is simple :) You just choose nicer photos for those alive and you get this kind of result )

  • If you want to make this trick. publish large amount of your photos in the internet and make a similar poll. then extract the data and split your collection into two classes. you will get about 85% success rate.

  • or you could just perform a magic trick called "out of this world" (as derren did) and you will come up with 100% success rate :)

  • Most everyone would be drawn to the same photos. Easy trick.

  • thats not how it works!

  • that guy looks like my dad who died when i was 3 from cancer >.>

  • Derren Browns is both a very competent HYPNOTIST and a magician/showman, he not well summed up as someone who JUST dresses 'standard tricks up to 'appear' as psychological'. Check out some of the other videos like Russian Scam and At the Dog Track compared the Rock Paper Scissors video and this one and you get to enjoy the quick TRANCE part. The only similarity between all of them is that anyone can do this kind of thing.

  • It truely is, as derren says, out of this world..

    hehe

  • lol haha this isn't a trick its more a common perseption of dead and a live he depicks dead people photos in different ways eg color of yellow non emotional photos, old, dark, its like the picture its self is dead

  • yea I learned about this we attatch ourselves to people who display positive emotions so he would pick a man who's smiling over somone who isn't

  • im thinkin they just put pictures that look sad and dark for the dead people and happy ones for alive

  • your dumb its not a matter of if he can its more a mater of will you let him his targets he picks are ones that are all ready in a trance like state or are easy and open to suggestion, every one is at one time or another

  • How this works is pretty simple.

  • I know this trick done with red & black cards, but this, this is an *incredible* performance. Derren, by changing the cards to photos, has done an absolutely amazing job. Sorry to those who believe it to be hypnotism, it's simply a wonderful piece of trickery, done by a masterful magician.

  • Ya, I would have grouped them differently

Mr. Party Atmosphere looked like a douche

...and the old guy with glasses looked like much more fun

  • I think you found yourself in the exact identical situation as the man was, you would be more prone to pick the same cards as he

  • How do you figure?

I'm sorry but not all people fit the exact same prescription.

Some people HATE black people, or Jewish people or whatever.

If someone thought "hey, that's a jew nose" they would group them differently.

I stand by my comment- I would have grouped the differently

  • I wasn't making any comment about racial prejudice... All i was saying is that for this trick to work it would have to work on more than one person.

Now, we only saw a very limited portion of their interaction, nor were we actually there to pick up on the subtle cues that caused the man to group them in the way that he had.

All I was saying is that, sitting at your desk watching a man sort cards is different than standing in front of Derren and sorting them. You might have chosen differently

  • You were making a comment about racial prejudice, because it's relevant to the position you are denying.

If someone has one- it will affect their sorting.

I agree that there had to be something additional going on to influence the sorting.

What I'm saying is that a very strong opinion would alter the sorting of the cards

nothing more needs to be said, I fully understand your position- Derren Brown manipulated the choices.

  • ...What??? You are making this something it isn't. All that I said was that if you were in that position, you would be more prone (likely) to pick the cards that he chose.

I don't deny that there are many many MANY factors that go into making a choice. What I am saying is that you would be more LIKELY to choose the cards he chose due to whatever Derren was doing.

  • Read my comment, and explain to me what about it suggests to you that I don't get what you're saying?

You're an idiot, a complete fucking idiot

  • No, how about you do the same to my comment. I agreed with you, yes their are other factors that affect a decision. I was simply remarking on the fact that you took my comment and made it about racial prejudices.

Of course, however, you decide to go with a personal attack instead of saying that perhaps we had a misunderstanding. By calling me a "fucking idiot" do you really prove anything? You must be some sort of man to insult people over the internet.

  • I wasn't "making this about racial prejudices", moron.

That's called an "example". I was using an "example" of racial prejudice to explain how some people's sorting of the cards may have been altered.

Other "examples" could have been used, but I think that "example" was one of the strongest.

Simple cues would not alter a strong racial prejudice.

Subliminal cues may alter most of our sortings- but would strong opinions would not be altered.

Your position is not complex- I get it.

  • looks like there's not much funincluded after all....so much anger...roar

  • All the young good looking people he put on one side and old and ugly people he put on the other side.

People are naturally drawn to beauty and youth.

    it's just that simple.

  • What about the young, pretty but sad girl with the umbrella?

  • nah the last pic was a old man with glasses and it was in the other group

  • enDOTwikipediaDOTorg/wiki/Szondi_test

  • the trick is his profession.

why would he know more about this?think about it! if he would be a graphic designer and DB ask him make two rows one which is red and sharp and one which is blue and blured, would it be so amazing?no.

but with dead and graveyard and ghost and undertaker whooooaaa. :)if the triCk is hidden in the title its difficult to c.

  • OK my guess is this: Because of his knowledge of human nature (how people judge others based on their appearances) Derren knew beforehand what kind of appearances somebody like an undertaker (who also knows people very well) would rate positively and which negatively. Then he just chose pictures of living people in the positive category and pictures of dead people in the negative category. It's all got to do with how the pictures were chosen beforehand. Either that, or he simply lied.

  • lol?

  • It's a card trick, as others have commented. Nothing at all to do with an understanding of human nature, except in how people can be fooled. A very nicely done card trick.

  • This almost made me cry at the end. Not because I was sad, but because it was such a moving and other-worldly thing to see. I've always thought looking at pictures of the deceased feels different than those who are alive.

  • i doubt they were dead -.-

  • Pretty people smiling and looking vibrant... are all "alive."

The "dead" people are all relatively 'unattractive,' etc.

  • By placing stereotypical negative things in the pictures like elderly (no wants to get old) or people wearing all black (black and darkness being considered negative in many stories) he seperates them perfectly. Just like when we are attracted to people who smile alot.

  • creepy :O

  • holy shit

  • they were in a graveyard like scenario this could possibly effect him subconsciously to devide them into alive and dead

  • "Thank you so much, thank you so much, that was, that was, out of this world thank you"

    ROFL brilliant, brilliant.

  • I caught it too. That was the most brilliant part of the trick.

  • Due to this being recorded, a "cheap" chard trick/sleigh of hand might be the most likely answer.

Even if it's not that, I'm rather confident that because people are, contrary to what they believe, rather similar. Thus you can probably just have a pile of random (or even some where certain features are strongly expressed) photos being pre-judged by a group of people. It's likely that someone will then come up with the same order. Writing dead/alive instead of like/dislike adds to the effect.

  • You're taking a random shot in the dark. The truth is that you don't know. So don't go trying to shoot down the performance when you're just stumped.

  • Actually, I do know. It's a standard sleight of hand card trick 'dressed' up to appear like a psychological or hypnosis trick. You fell for it hook, line and sinker.

  • So can you send me a message or reply to me how he did it? I'm curious now!

  • he doesnt know, bub

  • i think he does, this is really just a small variation of an old card trick, that a lot of magicians actually know. As a kind of inside joke, derren actually says the name of this card trick in he video

  • snikt

  • Its got nothing to do with dead/ alive.

all the images that were in the 'alive' were picture of happy people with brighter lighting in the photograph - smiles etc.

the deads - which prob arnt - are images of dark / saturated images with no smiles and cigarettes

brown knew which pile that the guy would do - and just wrote dead / alive in each -

go through the photos and see which u wuld put them in -

happy / sad pile, try it

  • or its just a card trick called "out of this world" and works no matter how you look at the photos, or it no matter which pile you put anything in ;)

  • why did two people thumbs down you when you're right? I hate this blind faith bullshit people have about Derren Brown. He can do the simplest card trick in the world, literally, (out of this world). And people think its some kind of mind trick. If you ask me it completely contradicts Derren Browns own rationalist belief system. He's a hypocrite for allowing his believes to think the way they do.

  • Let the guy make his mark, eh? He's a talented man. Give him some time, he'll be the next Randi, I predict.

  • so many magicians disagree with the way derren presents his illusions. If its wrong to say you have psychic powers, why is NOT wrong to say you have this advanced psychological skill? They're both lies, and they both lead people down a path of believing bull shit that can ruin their lives. Millions of dollars are wasted on this NLP bullshit and derrens partly to blame. I've never personally met Randi but i will one day and i'll ask if he personally disagrees with it or not.

  • Here is how I see it. While he is performing, he is a performer. As a magician, that is to say a person schooled in the art of entertainment through deception, in order to create the right level of legitimacy he has to present himself as legitimate. The difference is when he is off stage, on camera and in print (the second half of his book "Tricks of The Mind" book reads like a skeptics manifesto), unlike may so called psychics, spoon benders, and NLP gurus Derren Brown is quick to dismiss

  • (second half)

Its not hard for a mentalist to stand up on stage and say, just as Banachek does "i use my 5 senses to create the illusion of a 6th". And then do your thing. And then at the end of the show you disillusion them. In my eye thats not unethical. But when you completely make an entire routine such as the BMX bike to make it look like NLP is real and NEVER disillusion them. And never say, remember its all fake! Thats wrong. The only time he criticizes NLP is to magicians not the public.

  • (second half of comment)...

quick to dismiss any and all of those claims as exaggerated at best but mostly hocum. After reading his books and watching his interviews (like the one with R. Dawkins) it wouldn't surprise me if sometime in the future he comes out and gets all Penn and Teller on us. Which if you just scratch the surface he kind of already does. It's just a little harder to do when you present yourself as he must for his mentalist cred. Stupid character count!

  • I know derren is a skeptic. Which makes him all the more of a hypocrite in my eye. He leads people down a false belief system which he criticizes psychics who do the same thing. He criticizes the psychic industry for exploiting people for the money but the NLP industry does the same thing, but he has nothing to say about it cause his lie makes him millions of dollars a year so he turns a blind eye.

And for the record you don't have to present tricks as NLP, 1000's of mentalist don't do it.

  • He is very upfront about him using all trickery though, he never claims anything supernatural was at work.

  • I never said "supernatural". I said NLP. He doesn't use NLP. NLP is bullshit and he shouldn't say it is real for the same reason he doesn't say its psychic. Its a lie. It leads people down a wrong path in life based on false beliefs. Millions of dollars a year are waisted on NLP courses every year. And Derren is partly to blame. Read what i wrote more carefully. I never said supernatural.
