Sometimes, traditional practitioners compete in WuShu, categories... tournaments are a mere platform to demonstrate...good job! Steven NYC WuTang
Just work up to it & you'll be fine. ... oh, but then realize we all, or most of us, got a base dizzyness before we start spinning at all. Then the real "fun" starts (getting down to business)
You have form and then you have sanshou (free hand methods.) Which all kung fu styles have but this is merely a performance. A good one which shows some good power, but a performance none the less. Not saying he doesn't know the applications.
Wushu is split down the middle into two components, taolu and sanda. Taolu is forms competition, and sanda is sparring competition. Sanda is currently the discipline in use by the Chinese military. All of it is gongfu. Qingwen xianzai nimen bu shuo le.
all the sanda I've seen has been akin to K-1, that is kickboxing with 16oz gloves with throws and sweeps allowed.
So much of Chinese martial arts makes use of open hand strikes, trapping, seizing, and locking that I think modern sanda is missing that which makes Chinese traditional fighting techniques so special
Sanda is not a particular type or style set with rules. Sanda just means combat applications. Of course the televised matches will have rules, but not all sanda is designed for the opponent's safety. The military sanda is designed for combat, though most soldiers take basic training and have no more than basic styles. Also, saying modern sanda is redundant. Sanda includes all styles that can be used for combat, the difference is in aims: wushu aims for aesthetics, sanda for war.
This is true- for the sports version of wushu promoted by the Chinese government, so now the sportsmen who perform taolu can't fight, and those doing sanda can't (and don't) do the form.
Traditional wushu is not "split" into anything - taolu, duilian and sanshou are parts of one the the same art, and you have to practice them all.
this guy here is brilliant at gymnastics, but I bet he can't fight.
hmmm nope. originally it was just meant for demonstration and athletic purposes, if you read about Chinese martial arts history. Even the PRC Government admits to that fact. I didnt say u cant use it for combat, i just said it wasn't meant for it.
Ichi is right van. Wushu was the old term for GungFu but around the early 1900s it was used as a martial art system to demonstrate the athletic skills of many Gung Fu styles. And its mostly used for movies since it is very flashy. A good chunk of moves used in Wushu you can no do in a real fight. If you don't belive me then I would like you to go outside and do some spinning jump kicks and back flips in a fight and see what happens. Only basic stuff like punchs and kicks would work.
yeah but there are many kung fu styles that are actually used for combat and many that can kill you just have to find the right one like what he is doing called the circle walk can used for evasion and can teach you different angles of fighting and bring the fighter in to your territory but its used different when actually used in combat
Dear god is no one understanding what I said. we all know that Wushu was the term for Gung Fu pre 1900s then it became a martial system that wasnt about how to kick others asses but to show off the skills a artist could do if trained.
very true, wushu is definately a false act compared to kung fu in the shoa-lin temples, most people think a lot of wushu is true technique but is actually fake, the real moves are very different so you are correct
wushu in chinese means martial art, kung fu means energy and time. Wushu can be traditional or modern and traditional wushu can be used in combat. On this video u can see modern wushu, what is meant for demonstration, not fight. And kung fu isnt martial art, u can reach kung fu in any activity, if u gave many time and energy to this activity. (sorry for bad english, it isnt my language)
yeah you're right about the literal meanings of each one, unfortunately though, Chinese isn't so simple as to be able to translate the literal meanings like that. Noone would actually call anything that you put work and time into 'kung fu' in a real sentence. :)
yeah I remember seeing some video of some guy who traveled to china and said that a funny thing about china is that nothing is really what it supposed to mean.. as in Chinese say one thing but they mean something else lol.
con certeza eh um video muito interessante, mas esta longe de ser uma das melhores demonstrações de bagua ou dobra de ar( of corse that is a very interesting video, but its too far away of being the better demonstration of ba gua zhang or air bending);p
I found wushu & tai chi (instructional video) instant downloads for 5.00 that usualy cost 13 to 99 bucks as mail order vcd`s. Taught by the best modern chinese masters.
This is Wushu mixed with a little traditional Ba gua form. More Wushu though... A flaw here and there but this guy is great. I love his dynamic flow period.
Modern Wushu? In the west we obsess over the scientific applications of Martial Arts. In the east they obsess over the movement. Should this man need to apply his skill of movement to combat i have no doubt he could. Just as i have no doubt a good footballer could give me a strong kick on the nuts, even though he does not train to do so.
This is modern Chinese wushu. Wushu means originally "self-defense", or "martial art", however is now the name for competition-oriented show-gongfu. I wouldn't say it's combat applications. Wushu is practised for nice looks and high technical difficulty. Check out "Wushu One Family", they do twists on all jumps, to make them more difficult, to score higher in competitions. Has nothing to do with self defense.
ok, its cool if you like wushu, and as wushu is can be appreciated, but but call it Bagua Zhang is just a lie, their simply is no bagua skill being expressed in this demo. Its not about whether its trad or modern, its just about being honest as to what it is in its self, and this is a very impressive and difficult to perform DANCE.
You are actually right. not sure why anyone familiar with the art would mark you low. It could be called "stylized bagua movement" maybe. I practice traditional Cheng and Liang styles from a direct lineage myself, as well as Yi chuan ;-) Great stuff aint it?
Yeh I have to weigh in and agree on this as well, just because the negative marks on your comment are unwarranted. This is not Baguazhang. It's just not. His footwork makes me cringe.
That's not meant as disrespect to the guy, I'm sure he's a great wushu player.
I agree with you as well. I have been studying traditional Bagua zhang and this simply isn't. Not sure why people are exactly insulted, its the truth.
the performer is liu haibo from henan - his wushu is amazing!!! if you understand wushu than you don´t need to talk about is, like is this right or wrong, is this trad. or modern. bla bla bla. this is his personal style of bagua, and it´s great!!!
Good learning video, the name "combat application" is a bit immodest but this is definitely competiton-level Bagua. Too bad the crowd is rowdy and there is no music.
I kinda hate wushu. It's not an irrational hate - it pollutes the arts of gongfu - but it's a sort of love hate, because it does look beautiful, and the footwork of the practitioners must be quite good.
This is BaguaZhang and I'd add that it has a XingYi flavor to it, like so many Bagua branches out there. Po27 wrote "aucune" as comment. It means "none" in French. The guy doing the form might or might not know how to fight with these moves but in the branch of Bagua I'm training in has similar moves (the non-XingYi ones). They all have applications to them. It's not because they're not as obvious those in Karate or boxing that they're not there! Meeting a REAL Bagua teacher would convince you!
well i practice bagua and i can tell you that the combat aplications arent questionable at all. if u look close enough you can even see scientific reasons for y the work. and this guy is smooth and quick, but sumtimes forgets form. if you look closely when he's going across the mat, he doesnt put his heel down, then the sole of the foot. in bagua u always put ur heel down first.
It reallly depends on how you are taught and by whom. I was taught to place my foot down flat. In taijiquan I was taught to put the heal down first, it all depends on what stepping method you are using... there are numerous ways to walk.. i.e. mud stepping, lion steps, crane steps etc.
I seriously doubt you know anything about Wushu, so don't start pretending you know something you don't. Bagua's combat ablications aren't questionable just because YOU would suck at them. >_>

no, actualy, YOU are the one that needs to wake up. I am a Wushu practitioner myself, everyone I know would tell you that i average a 10 hour training session for the past 10 years. I know my stuff, as well as Many different fighting styles that are not even related to Shaolin.
I don't talk out of my "ass", Because common sense would tell you that the effectiveness of ANY martial art depends entirely on the person who uses it. Calling Ba Gua questionable prooves that you would lack the common sense to use it.
Since i am experianced with almost every other martial art, I KNOW HOW BAGUA WOULD WORK AGAINST THEM. I'm not trying to brag, I'm just telling the truth. You don't seem like Shaolin to me at all.
